Recently I've felt that LAV drivers have been more or less ignored in the storm of discussion of the new vehicle and AV changes, this isn't particularly new for us as in earlier builds we were eclipsed by Tanks and potent Dropships and in the newer build our reputation was one to be hated due to the effectiveness of the LLAV, but I'd like to use this thread as one for general discussion on all things LAV related in an arena in which LAV discussion isn't very prevalent.
Quick History - Glass Cannons and Murder Taxis
I've mentioned this in other threads but there was a time where the LAV actually meant what it advertised, it functioned as a legitimate Light Attack Vehicle. Back in Chromosome and beyond, before the missile nerf, I distinctly remember having people willingly get in my Saga to gun as I drove around the map racking up assist kills in the process. Back then Missiles were the end all be all turret type to fit on any vehicle and they were extremely easy to rack up kills with effectively. Combine that with them not having the ridiculous missile momentum that causes them to veer off wildly from your aiming cursor and a well fit LAV was a very real asset to anyone on the team. Back then they were undoubtedly Glass Cannons and though they were powerful they were also extremely easy to disable with a few well placed AV Grenades or Proximity Mines. It's hard to say whether or not they were profitable as a result because losing an LAV in a battle meant that you'd be forking over more than what you'd generally make in the course of the match but I can say that being a dedicated LAV driver was a very real, if not a bit niche, profession.
I don't think I need to go too far into what happened in Uprising with the rise of the murder taxi. We saw an HP buff on a vehicle with insane base resistances and the removal of a prevalent glitch that caused clones to clip inside of the vehicle and thus the reign of terror that results forever taints the legacy of the LAV and Vehicles as a whole. Everyone skills into AV, LLAVs lose their killing ability, and LAVs and Dropships are screwed as a result. Today Dropships and LAVs are relegated to strictly transportation and the Tank is the only standard fitted vehicle worth putting in harms way.
The Impact of 1.7 - Light At the End of the Tunnel?
Let's look at stats : Methana - 650Shields / 2450 Armor (Wow!) - 3100 Total - 1 High / 2 Low Shield Regen : 132 Shield Renen Delay / Depleted Delay : 6s/15s
Saga - 1200 Shields / 900 Armor - 2100 Total - 2 High / 1 Low Shield Regen : 285 (Wow!) Shield Regen Delay / Depleted Delay : 8s/20s
Current Known AV Stats : - Reduced AV grenade damage (STD: 1050 -> 725; ADV: 1260 -> 870; PRO: 1470->1015 ) - Reduced swarm launcher damage (330 -> 220) - Reduced Swarm Launcher lock-on range from 400m to 175m -* Forge Gun Changes Pending*
So this is what we're looking at in terms of stats, a couple things strike out at me immediately. 1. Holy crap Shield Regen is awesome now and that Shield Regen rate on the Saga seems really insane. 2. The Methana has a huge amount of base health for an unfitted LAV. 3. Is AV going to be able to kill a fitted LAV? Are new Tactics needed?
I like the approach to vehicle regeneration being closer to what we see in dropsuits, shields are less hefty than armor but regen much faster and armor is far tankier but at the cost of passive regen. and the regen itself being significantly slower. Armor also has the benefit of constantly healing in any and all situations regardless of damage taken. The change to shield regen across all vehicles encourages a sort of hit and run sort of action in which you go into a heavily contested area, do your damage, and get out to repair and restock on ammunition.
The base hit points on these vehicles initially seems alarming but when you look at how much health each individual extender or plate would be given to your vehicle (not a lot) and account for the significantly decreased number of slots I think it balances itself out. The overall health of these vehicles wont be significantly altered by the modules they put on so the base health presented is representing the majority of the health we'll be seeing on these vehicles. Methanas in particular will probably be better off not even bothering with plates on their vehicles, more on potential fittings later though.
The damage values of an individual AV person relying on swarms has been dramatically decreased though so I do wonder whether any single swarmer will represent a significant threat to any LAV on the field. What I predict will happen is that ultimately the tactics to deal with LAVs will have to change, Swarms won't be particularly effective against LAVs because after the first or second volley we'll have ample time (and health) to get out of the range of their swarms and repair ourselves. As a result I expect we'll see an increase in the number of AV using proximity mines to create areas where an LAV is in serious trouble if they choose to pass through them. Ultimately though I don't think LAVs being much harder to kill is a bad thing when the everything is taken within context.
1. LAVs can't effectively road kill people as easily anymore so you need team play.
2. LAVs as a whole are far more vulnerable than any other class of vehicle in the game, the driver is vulnerable and the gunner is vulnerable so its easier to cripple the offensive effectiveness of an LAV with traditional weaponry without having to go about destroying the vehicle itself. I think this fact more than any is something that'll encourage the use of fitted LAVs on the battlefield while making sure that they don't become TOO good
So I've talked enough to get things started I hope, what do you guys think? Let's get the ball rolling again and lets look forward to the return of LAVs as a significant force on the battlefield (but not as Murder Taxis!). |

I think the buff is great for LAVs I'm a FG myself and I use them for transport, but two swarms currently absolutely wrecks them, for me this isn't a big deal as the primary purpose is mitigating the mobility problems of the heavy suit, but they seemed like riding around in an aluminum can, just waiting to be destroyed.
With that said tactics will certainly have to be used to take out a smart LAV driver, because now the name of game will be burst damage, a combination of multiple av users, or RE logi with a forge gunner/swarmer.
At this point I don't think the balance of FG to Vehicles will change much, especially not against ground vehicles after having the splash radius reduced. This was CCP saying that FG used as AV is mostly ok, but it should be a bit harder to kill infantry with it. |

As a heavy i use my LLAV for this
Since they are getting removed i have a new LAV
It makes up for the lack of LLAV at least and also gives the LAV some durability against AV meaning that tactically they can be used more often
But remember to get full use of them you have to skill into the vehicle tree to access the mods and passive skills which may improve the LAV
As a pilot it may give me something to muck about with, also more of a challenge to pop these LAVs with a tank |

i want LAV's back to where they were in chrome, they could roadkill but even a well fitted methana could only eat 2-3 av nades, and with a proper engineering skill it allowed for some real variety in fits. me bojo the mighty, and hunter junko would just cruise around the map racking up wp in bojo's attack methana, me and bojo once managed to earn 1600wp together without getting out of the lav, a well fit lav could be deadly and fun, i miss it.

The first point is definitely why you're not seeing many decked out methanas / sagas on the field. Right now they're just far too fragile compared to the cost it takes to fully fit them out, with these changes being what they are I hope this attitude is beginning to shift.
I can't imagine FG's staying the way they are if they want Dropships to be viable in the slightest. If we're considering that the content in a patch is locked around the time the previous patch goes live then the Forge Radius nerf was probably considered and implemented internally around the time 1.5 was rolling out and we're just seeing its effect now, likewise we won't see the real changes they had in mind for the FG until 1.7 is nearly on top of us.

I think the biggest hurdle beyond having to skill into the vehicle tree is just going to be finding a teammate that will willingly act as your gunner while dodging enemy fire and moving about the map, though if you're just running around solo then I bet you'll be happy to have that ability to just remove the turret and increase the tank of your vehicle.

I think a combination of the ammo limitation and the general shift to a more tanky vehicle is going to mean we'll see an increase of this style of play while keeping it reasonable in its overall effectiveness. Though the ammo limitation as a whole will probably effect the LAV far less than any other vehicle class in its current state. I have fond memories of the few dedicated LAV Drivers going at it back in the Chrome days though, I'd love to get back to that in 1.7. Now that I have a mic I'd love to team up with you guys.

ah memories of the days when lavs were useful and fragile, and when i went round roadkilling before it was cool, took out 5 people in less than a second once, almost killed the lav though.

So with the fitting tool out I thought I'd take a crack at fitting some viable Sagas and Methanas post patch. All fits assume either Shield or Armor Fitting Op. being maxed and having 0 points in Small Turret Fitting Op. This is because I'm assuming for the most part that vehicle users won't exclusively be LAV based so they'd be more likely to prioritize skills that would affect all fittings regardless vs. one that gives marginal gains for a turret type thats only "necessary" for attack Dropships and LAVs. I also go out to assume the use of blaster turrets for both pending confirmation that Missile turret momentum will be addressed in 1.7
Saga : Shields : 1200 + 480 = 1680 Armor : 900
High : Complex Shield Extender + Complex Shield Booster
Low : Enhanced PG Extender
Turret : Small Neutron Blaster
Skills : Shield Fitting Op. 5
Comments : I think going 1 booster and 1 extender is the best way of getting the best of both worlds using the Saga. Yes, the booster effectively gives you more Health as a single injection but at the trade off of being more vulnerable to burst damage. If the Saga had higher base shields it wouldn't be an issue but with 1200 Base Shields you're pushing your ability to react. With the way boosters work now the ability to preemptively activate a repper in anticipation of damage is diminished. If you activate early then you've wasted your booster because its a single pulse. The higher base shields also allows you to put some reliance on your monstrous shield regen when you feel you've been tapped instead of bludgeoned by AV as well.
1680 Shields allows you to do the following as well 1. Tank 3 STD AV Nades or 2 Proto AV nades without breaking into Armor. (This is so great) 2. Tank 2 Volleys of STD Swarms with 350 Shields Remaining
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Methana : Shields : 650 Armor : 2450
High : Militia Active Nitrous (cost cutting, no difference between MLT and STD tiers aside from fitting)
Low : Complex Armor Repairer x2
Turret : Small Neutron Blaster
Skills : Armor Fitting Op. 5
Comments :
This I'm a little iffier about, the way I see it one might be able to passively repair more damage than what they'd gain by using a plate in any one instance. The basis of this is with respect to Swarms and there being that delay between each shots, unlike Shield Regen Armor Regen has the benefit of going on regardless of being hit or not so with 2 complex repairers one's healing a passive 150 Armor (or 180 with Armor Rep. Skills). One's more vulnerable to AV grenades but with a Nitrous you can get away from it faster ... *shrug*
It may just be better to run 1 plate 1 repairer .. will need testing. :P |
I only use LLV's, as they can actually fit a good amount of reppers on them, and they can take damage, so if I need to stealthy move people around the map, I can, and won't really have to worry about getting spotted, as if I do, like I said, I could take damage.
I think my LLAV could use a buff.
But when IAFGs aren't breathing down my neck, I use my LLAV as an ultimate Attack Vehicke. It's got missiles, an F/45dmg control unit, polarized armor reps, active scanners, light shield transporters, remote armor repairers, and an overdrive unit.
And when I start repping people with that armor repairer, I rack up points even quicker than I do with my normal logi
The History segment is incomplete with regards to Murder Taxis. The term was first coined when HMG users would suicidally drive up in BPO Militia LAVs and try to hop out before an AV grenade killed them. That was during the days when the LLAV was still a clever trolling by CCP with a false description and sub-par stats. Later when vehicles got more zip the term was hijacked by people obsessed with road kill. Whether it be with the then newly improved LLAV or goofballs using free/cheap Dropsuits and free LAVs.
On my main I'm a Heavy. Regardless of any changes my fate is tied with my Ishukone Watch LAV BPO. It should be interesting see how the Vehicle Module BPOs end up changing.
So some takeaways from the new blogpost : http://dust514.com/news/2013/11/vehicles-in-uprising-1.7/
- Gal Vehicles are faster than Caldari Vehicles again, Methana will be faster than the Saga
- Small Rail Turrets "now significantly more useful against vehicles than before"
- Vehicles are locked to squad for 15 seconds after deployment
- Mounted Turrets have certain aim assist mechanics to help em out (HNNNGGGH)
The biggest thing for LAVs is undoubtedly the Small Rail buff, those things are packing 290~377 damage a shot and will undoubtedly make LAVs a very real threat to the tanks on the battlefield. Beyond that the fact that people will be able to aim in moving vehicles represents a pretty big change to small turret usability as well. Hype Hype Hype Hype, need to go make Railgun fittings now.
I was hoping for info on efficiency ratings on small turrets vs light and heavy vehicles. Before a railgun doing 400 dmg would actually be doing 200 per shot which is crazy given that you only get 3 shots before it overheats. The new blaster is doing 705 dps at up to 60 meters away which is great on paper, but I would like to know they'll pierce vehicles a bit more in 1.7.
Yeah, I might be ahead of myself with taking Wolfman's comment and assuming it means that Small Rails will be doing 100% of their damage against all vehicles but with their general uselessness against Infantry I would hope that they would give the turret the niche its deserved to have since the beginning. It's meant to be a true and dedicated AV turret and its never been effective at that role.
The Blaster is a whole different story though, those things genuinely used to tear through other vehicles, I have fond memories of some guy and his turret man blowing up my Saga pre-Chromosome with proto blasters.
Personally I want the bike idea implemented to help augment movement. A good, cheap, single seat transport - Particularly for Heavies without a BPO LAV. Even thought the Militia LAV is cheap it gets expensive calling in a new one you need to redeploy (often you have no time to recall and either a blue takes it or enemies blow it up)
The LAV should indeed be an attack platform. I once gunned in my CEO's SLAV and it was amazing how easy it was to gun down opponents at speed. Almost a shame they're removing them but the standard should be about the same and more survivable. Great for gunning down enemies caught in the open on maps like Manus Peak
Hm Hm, I'm going to assume that something like this would be strictly for Transport.
Saga : Shields - 1200 Armor - 900
High : MLT Shield Booster + MLT Nitrous Low : Ammo (or nothing) Turret : MLT Missile Launcher
Without any Skills the Shield Booster has a recharge time of 70 seconds, you may consider just using an Onikuma with a Nitrous instead and relying on Shield Regen to do your recharging for you.
Personal transport is neat but I'm immediately reminded about hitting the vehicle quota as soon as possible the moment people start calling them down, I'd imagine also that running around in a Bike would make you extremely vulnerable to enemy fire at any given time while you're essentially strapped to a ticking time bomb where any amount of vehicle resistance leaves you and your Bike dead ... could be fun though.
It never occurred to me that you could fit Heavy Shield Extenders on any of these frames. I do wonder how Shield Booster v. Heavy Extender is going to play out for this vehicle with one giving you a +600 increase to your base and the other giving you a 900 Shield Injection when you need it. On one hand the Extender will probably make you less vulnerable to burst damage capable of instant popping you before your module can activate but you'll undoubtedly tank more damage overall if you can get your Booster up in time.
At the very least you're more likely to have to get out and repair your armor health without having the extra buffer of Shields after taking a Forge Gun hit or something. May come down to that factor that decides it for most people.
So ... going over the stats of Small Missiles vs. Small Rails in 1.7 has lead me to the conclusion that there really is still no reason to use Small Rail Turrets.
So let's compare stats :
Small Rail: .7 second spool up time before first shot 175m Effective Range 250m Optimal Range .5 Second Delay between shots Damage Modifier (to vehicles) : .7 (meaning they're only doing 70% of their damage against vehicles wtf) Proto Damage : 377
Small Missile No delay before first shot 200m Effective Range 200m Optimal Range 1.4 Second Delay between shots Damage Modifer (to vehicles) : 1 (100% damage done on vehicles) Proto Damage : 455
so ... yeah. The .7 second spool up time combined with lower damage per shot and 70% effectiveness against vehicles means ... that there's really no reason to ever use the Small Rails over Small Missiles in an AV environment and I really doubt Small Rails will be trumping Small Missiles in anti-infantry so ... why bother?
So the math here isn't adding up for me, you can do Basic Heavy Shield Extender / MLT Scanner / MLT PG / Turret but you can't run MLT everything and have enough spare PG to fit a turret as well, not without level 5 turret fitting proficiency and MLT Missiles instead.
Regardless I'll be adding this fit minus the turret as a go-to no-skills 2 passenger transport vehicle.
Ill probably have to spend some skills to make it really good, but I was able to fit this with a militia blaster turret: Mlt Heavy shield extender. Mlt Scanner. Mlt Pg upgrade.
:)
If you fit a Militia 20GJ Railgun on it, you will be able to fit all of those mods! No skills needed.
Of course it's railguns. Edited Tier 0 Saga fit for the BPO users on the front page and added some more stuff that's probably going to be made obsolete in like 2 days once everyone finds this stuff to be super bad. Thanks for the clarification.
Anywho, updated first post with a few more Saga fittings and I emphasized the 2 main types that I feel people will be choosing from when using the vehicle.
1. Hit and Run - Extender + Nitrous : In no way are you meant to take on sustained damage, I've done the math against Proto and ADV swarms with a Complex Damage mod and you can tank 2 full volleys from either weapon. The third will destroy you if you're not out of there. This vehicle is designed to exploit the Swarms decreased lock range; you get in, you do whatever damage you can, and then you use your nitrous to get out. Don't dawdle and do not get greedy, if you stick around you will die. Thanks to Nitrous not taking a crap load of CPU it's also a lot easier to fit Missiles on these things without needing Shield Fitting Proficiency.
2. Keep Attacking - Extender + Shield Booster : So shield boosters are kind of awesome now as they give you an instant injection of 900 Shields when ya need it. These fittings give you significantly more tank at the cost of speed. You can tank a full clip of ADV Swarms ... but Wirykomis are still going to screw you over if you're hit with a clip of them and they have damage mods. Play this exactly like Hit and Run if you were less effective at running and less effective at hitting. For some reason it's really hard to fit missiles on a Saga when you use Booster + Extender, I think they need a CPU upgrade. Why is this a main fitting type again? I dunno, it might not suck maybe and its good with Blaster turrets.
I'll start on Methana fittings after I stop being depressed that all the relevant Anti-LAV AV weapons (Proximities, Remote Explosives, Swarm Launchers, AV Grenades, and hell even Forge Guns) in the game do more damage to armor coupled with the fact that passive resistance modules have been removed in addition to being unable to fit a reasonable Hardener, Repper, and Turret on the frame without armor fitting proficiency V and even with that you're stuck with 25 Armor HP/s regen which is ew.
but hey at least they're faster right?
