This is a thread of mine from the Eve Forums. I didn't notice any rules about duplicate threads across forums for different games, and we all know Eve and Dust aren't really connected at all anyway, sooo....
The current release schedule for Dust is roughly one content update per month. Its essence is listed below, as I understand it. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Named major content expansions are planned for once a year release - The current expansion is Uprising - As I understood previous to Nullarbor's post here, major content expansions are roughly to match Eve's once a year named major content release
Minor patches and content updates (nerfs/buffs) are planned for roughly once a month - These patches are named for their expansion and their order of release, so that the patch released on the 7th month after the major expansion would be named as follows. --Uprising 1.7--
What are your thoughts on this release schedule? So far it seems to have produced rushed, buggy, forgettable, and sometimes late patches. It's literally a quantity over quality approach that is reflected in game play. New patches intended to fix bugs introduce a whole host of bugs, sometimes serious. Uprising 1.5, for example, completely broke in game voice coms for many players. Further, the balance efforts made each patch are largely wasted. Consider the 1.6 buff to Heavy suit HP. Currently, the only Heavy frame in the game is Amarr. The other races are excluded from this balance pass because they don't exist. When Caldari Heavies are introduced, will their base HP be sufficient? Will Amarr HP levels be in line with Gallente Heavies? Will Minmatar Heavies be able to field a better armor tank that Amarr Heavies and is that acceptable or not? How will the new Heavies interact with infanty? with vehicles? We can't answer these balance questions because Dust is missing that basic content. The result is that once a month patches, which are too frequent in the first place, waste effort trying to balance a game that's missing half its content.
- Once a month patches for the sake of once a month patches is unsustainable. It produces poor quality patches. - All four racial variants of basic light, medium, and heavy dropsuit frames and vehicles need to be released as soon as possible. - After all the basic content is in game, a slower, steadier patch schedule could focus efforts on higher quality patches. |

Uh this patch cycle is due to nature of PS3 also the dev's throw things in when they are ready so rushing is not really an exscuse it's more poor qa on ccp.
I think the op needs to do a bit more homework on reality of console development

I doubt we will move entirely away from monthly updates. We're probably going to have updates regardless just it may start shifting towards to what like what we are getting in 1.6. A small fix it patch between the content patches, and its good that we try to fix something every month at least.
This will allow larger feature to be released with more focus and polish.

The knowledge they HAVE to put somthing in each month most likely helps keep dev's focused and prevent to much time waffling or losing focus

I support getting a new patch the first week of every month, I actually really like it a lot.

but it's nice to have the few that work in a timely manner. voice has been an issue for ccp for sometime now and it was screwed up in a number of builds. though inconvenient this incarnation of the mic bug isn't that bad.
I'm happy to have the monthly releases, and wouldn't want it to change until the game is stable enough for bi-yearly expansions.

This is much better than what it was in closed/open beta. We would play for 6 months with the same game breaking bugs. Sure there are still issues, but more rapid smaller releases allow things to be addressed quicker. |

Agile development is a proven strategy. Just because 1.6 doesn't have much player-facing content, doesn't mean they haven't been working on a lot of stuff this whole time. It means they're releasing content when it's ready. The bigger problem is the lack of a testing environment. If you look at the state of the game when 1.0 hit compared to what we'll see next week it should be evident that this approach is very effective. I wouldn't be playing if we were still running 1.0 waiting for the big annual bug fix to drop and solve all of our problems. |

It was mention once already but I'll reiterate it to make sure you understand:
- List of fixes and changes is prioritized and a rough schedule is created.
- Devs get to work.
- Cut-off for next build is announced and any work that is complete and tested is added to build.
- The patch is built and sent to Sony for their QA.
- Work that is incomplete or doesn't pass testing continues into the next cycle.
At no point should any fix be considered any more rushed or poorly done because of the monthly cycle. Instead, we the players benefit from regular opportunities for completed work to be delivered to us. |

It's a catch-22. If they release periodic major patches that release and fix things in one fell swoop, players will complain how the game isn't fixed fast enough. If they release frequent minor patches that primarily fix bugs, with [optimistically] every other patch releasing content and rebalancing, then players complain that the patches don't contain enough.
Let's face it, CCP is comprised of humans. I'm fairly certain they don't operate on a 24/7 work schedule. They can't fix everything in every patch, they can't develop and release all basic content in a month.
Although why they're this far behind after four years, that's another story.
In and out of hiatus frequently.
