Here are some of my most memorable and favorite FPS games:
Goldeneye 007 - N64 (literally played for an entire summer when I was a kid) Perfect Dark - N64 (perhaps the best game of all time) Turok - N64 (blowing the **** out of dinosaurs with goar and guts flying, oh yeah!) Deus Ex: Conspiracy - PS2 Timesplitters - PS2 (the multiplayer map/match creator was absurdly fun to mess around with!) Red Faction - PS2 (the destructive environments made for some very fun gameplay, loved tunneling with the RL) Area 51 - PS2 Half Life - PS2 (even if this is a PC game, it is a classic even on the PS2) COD4 - PS3 (lets face it, this game revolutionized FPS online games on consoles) Killzone 2 - PS3 (the aiming was pretty terribad, but overall an amazing game) Resistance 2 - PS3 Portal - PS3 (perhaps not a shooter, but is in FPS view and is a game everybody should play at least once) Orange Box - PS3 (sort of goes hand-in-hand with portal, but still worth a mention due to HL 2)
I know I am missing some of the FPS classics I played throughout my life, but this i a good rundown of it.

Borderlands 2 for best Story Dust 514 for best Scope Resistance 2 for best Co-op game mode Unreal Tournament for best Competitive game mode Halo for best Music Metroid Prime for best Immersion (and environments) Battlefront 1/2 for best Game Modes (everything from capture the objective to blow up the enemy ship in space) Battlefield for best Realism MAG for best Command System Battlezone for best RTS while you're playing an FPS...in a tank...in space
As for the upcoming Destiny and Battlefront 3...
Destiny for best MMOFPS Battlefront 3 for best game of all time (hopefully, if DICE doesn't screw it up)
I think that Battlefront 3 will be almost exactly the same as Dust is right now, except for better graphics, better vehicles, bigger battles. The only thing it probably won't have is the paying for gear mechanic, and the sp mechanic. If you've ever player battlefront 2, you know how similar it is to Dust.
Side note: If CoD was going to win an award it might be for biggest playerbase...but it's definitely not the best playerbase. |

Though GoldenEye, Halo (2, or maybe 3), Bad Company 2, and CoD4 deserve a mention.
Also, never played it but I'm surprised no one has mention Timesplitters yet. Timesplitters! Yes!! Even my wife love playing that one
Local 4 player GoldenEye back in the late 90's was very, very close to flawless. |

Bro. no.... YOU DIDNT PLAY MAG? ... u.u im feel sorry...
No wonder, MAG was leader of FPS for anyone who played it, made most other FPS all the same compared to it, thats how good it was. getting in a domination match, infiltrating enemy lines with a squad, and by enemy lines i mean you and other 7 dudes vs 128 enemy players XD, then getting discovered, about to die... Allied Officer in charge sent Gas bombarddment, while enemy was running away , frieny paratroopers were seen in the horizon....
oh...The adrenaline.... |

Goldeneye: first multi-player pvp. Most important fps ever.
Delta force series : pushed for realism and paved the way for cod, bf, ghost, and all other realistic type modern shooters.
Unreal Tournament: made pvp fun. Best fps ever.
Boarderlands: best fps rpg. The combined th best parts of Diablo and Unreal Tournament.
Dust 514: sub part never left the beta stage really. Innovative, yet all progress is destroyed to rewrite the way the game is played, instead of just improving what is already in place. Verdict: fps with the most potential, once the developers all get on the same page. |

I feel Planetside 1 and 2 should be on the list, because no other FPS can boast 1000s of players on a single map.
My vote however, goes to MAG, that game was something else. It had the most absolutely insane battles, especially on SVER Domination, and Raven Acquisition. I don't think I've ever enjoyed a multiplayer game more than that. |

Counter-Strike 1.6 is king of the twitch shooters.
Tribes 2 is king of the aerial shooters.
Unreal Tournament is king of the arena shooters.
Goldeneye is king of the nostalgia shooters.
Operation Flashpoint is king of the "hide in a bush for two hours" shooters.
Halo is king of the single player shooters.
Half-Life is king of the nobody actually plays half-life but we all play the mods shooters.
F.E.A.R. is king of the horror shooters.
Dust is the king of unfulfilled promises on a terrible piece of hardware. |

The one thing that pisses me off about Halo is that every now and then during a match, the game will momentarily halt because the host has left the game and then a new host has to be chosen. The game then resumes at its normal pace. But it was getting annoying. This is why I prefer dedicated servers that don't rely on players as hosts. |

MAG was the greatest ever, but after playing it lately,it's a mere shell of it's former self now,but when it was in it's prime, there's nothing that could come close to touching the pure chaos of the battlefield.
Honestly, even though it's third person and I don't even know if I can qualify it as a shooter,Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast is perhaps the funnest online experience that I've ever had.
There's NOTHING that can compare to 1vs1 lightsaber duels to the death! NOTHING!
Chivalry Medieval Warfare is pretty damn fun too in the same way but with way more brutality.
As for shooter's that weren't online,the game Black on PS2 was f'ing awesome. |
