It's hilarious how few people are able to correctly interpret a graph.
No matter how steeply a graph descends, there will always be someone who insists it is in fact going up.
Last time we had more than 4000 players online was in august. Current max is around 3500. Maximum this year was over 9000 in May. Oh yes the population is definitely increasing :/
There is a point where a game becomes nonviable. I don't know where that point is for Dust. All I know is that it does get annoying seeing the same names on the battle list all the time.
As I said (though it's amazing how poor peoples reading comprehension can be) this wasn't a QQ thread. This was an attempt to prompt intelligent discussion on what is happening.
But please, allow me to return you to you fan-boy circle jerk. |

I think it has a lot to do with school being back. Everything is slowing down quite drastically. I hope CCP can turn this around, and I think the will with a couple of really good updates. So I'm not too worried.
Although, if everyone seems to be in agreement that dust is losing players and we supposedly play with the same people over and over again, how come I can never seem to recognize anyone when I'm on the forum or online? I've bumped into maybe two or three players I could say "Oh, I remember you from that one match."
I'm not leaving because I plan to be a proto god (or at least have a name everyone can recognize) when new players start coming in. So far no proto equipment though. |

Because console players are fickle, they are accustomed to PvE games or games that have a short shelf life until the next version is released so they can start from scratch again. PC players have more patience and understand the development cycle of MMO's and how a game evolves over time. Console Gamers = Want everything now so they can move onto the next thing. PC Gamers = Want iterative releases to keep them loyal.
Screw that noise, I played Everquest for 6 years and EVE for 7, I'm at Olympic level re patience with MMO dev shenanigans. Dust isn't developing, its floundering |

Dust isn't developing, its floundering I'm going to have to agree as well. I came from 10 years of Final Fantasy XI which includes the multiple cases of Square-Enix outright trolling their player base with Absolute Virtue, Pandemonium Warden, and worst of all the salvage permaban. |

slowly CCP runs dry on excuses. just face it, playercount at primetime decreases by ~500 per month. |

LogicLoop and Team did a great job with the new maps and sockets. Also, the Squad Sight changes have added a 'bit more depth to combat. I'd say balance and core mechanics are of greater concern than new gadgets and guns.
See this is the problem. Get 20 people here on this board and say "What do you think the devs should focus on?"
You will get 21 different answers and every one of those answers is fairly legitimate (except the tard asking for jet fighters).
There are a dozen completely reasonable requests in each category of: 1) Weapon balance 2) Gunplay 3) Terrain bugs 4) Vehicle balance 5) Game modes 6) Comms 7) Tiercide 8) Art & assets 9) Map design 10) Matchmaking 11) NPE 12) Economics 13) Ties to EVE etc etc etc etc ...
The list is just so goddamn gigantic that it would bring the biggest FPS studio to its knees. Then here we have a small offshoot studio with limited staff and budget sitting there thinking "Holy !@$#!@, how can we get this sorted within 6 months before we finally lose too many players."
There just isn't enough manpower/money/time to keep everyone happy, miles from it. They needed 2 years more alpha/beta and some devs with far more FPS experience where they could sort stuff in peace and quiet without having to worry about maintaining an in-play game.
So, because they just can't dev fast enough (and honestly I feel bad for the devs as human beings, its not entirely, or even partially their fault) then EVERYONE except the real diehards and CCP groupies is going to be displeased.
They are just stuck between a rock and a hard place. If they concentrate on my pet hates re terrain, map design and tiercide then they are ignoring some other guy's wants re Economics or Game modes. No win for the devs and also no customer satisfaction. |

This isn't a "Dust is dying" thread. I'm just expressing dismay that this game that I enjoy seems to be slowly bleeding players and am wondering how this game could attract players again. Also I'll preempt the Grand Theft Auto argument by pointing out that numbers of active players has been decreasing for a while.
hmm... why is 6 months and past year graph nearly identical?
where is that peak "6000" from past years middle..
past year = more like this year or 6 + little months.. or smth.. |

2 game modes after 2 years. No PvE. No progression during a game as you get in MAG or Battlefields Rush mode. 4000 maps? More like 10 if that, with some bit n bobs changed around a tiny bit.
It's boring. That's the killer. You spend MONTHS building a char, and then play the same 2 game modes over and over. Doesn't matter how deep the customisation is.
Defiance is doing pretty well, it's 99% PvE, there's PvP it is just voluntary. That's becomming more popular too. Specialisation comes from sticking with a weapon there, and the basic version of each gun is effective enough, unlike a militia suit/gun. |

Edit: I do think Dusts maps swapping around plugins is very cool, but there need to be more maps for those plugins. Closely packed ones could really create an urban environment, but it needs doing.

KotH is just control points with less points you clever chap you. There might be a difference on where you can spawn too, but it didn't really make any difference (uplinks are OP). |

I am in agreement that a lot of it has to do with people playing the game less. I used to play the game after I capped but not anymore. I maybe have 2-3 sessions a week now and barely hit my cap if ever. There is just really nothing to do for vets at the higher end of the SP scale other than grind. You either save your SP or skill into suits/weapons that you arent as interested in to vary your experience.
If CCP had not gone with monthly updates and, instead gone with something similar to EVE, we would be coming up on the first expansion for DUST shortly.
If we compile all the new content we would be getting in that expansion based on the monthly updates it would be: Commando Suit Large Terrain Map w/ new Large socket Squad Finder Daily Bonus New Battle Finder Graphics/Performance Improvements Two New Weapons Corporate Roles
That isnt bad but it wouldnt be applauded as a major step forward. Then, when you add in that they are removing about half the vehicles for a re-balancing then it seems moot.
People were excited for the short/long term plan that CCP presented at Fanfest and that has yet to be realized. They have spent months trying to correct the issues that came about with 1.0 and while they have definitely done a good job with that, it has left a stale game for people to play. For a majority of people, there is nothing more to play than Pub matches. For those that dont care about the impact of FW on EVE its just another pub match. There is zero sense that you are building towards anything... no sandcastles as CCP eluded to. |

If ccp dropped everything and worked on: corperation district PvE matches public contract PvE matches
With game modes including: Survival(endless waves of drones every minute the drones becoming harder and harder and you can only take 1 squad into this game mode and once all your team mates die it's game over)
Drone clearing:(go in with full team or full squad take out 10 or 20 drone spawners in the designated time )
If they dropped everything for 2 months and everyone was focused on pve I'm sure they could get it done, you want more players? You want to know how? Release PvE then release a trailer for it. Unlike the deceptive 2012 trailer. |

Honestly, I think this would be the most productive use of their time for retaining older players. I don't see newer players wanting to come into a game that still has bugs on a regular basis. Then consider that they would need the PVE to be available to everyone (snipers too). Giving a sniper PVE content without it feeling like playing a flash game in a browser (click, click, click) seems like it might be kind of tough. |
