I have a little "problem"/"nuisance" since 1.4 with my wallet and somehow i'm curious how other people handle this.
As for myself. I use Adv fittings most of the time and usually get around 10-15 kills and 3-5 deaths. Thats usually being in the top 5 and i think 200-300k isk per match. (I-Śm only playing public matches as i don't want any corp commitments at the moment. I don't have much time to play and i don't know how well PC matches are paied out.) I usually do domination or sometimes skirmish as it feels like my team always gets rushed by well organized squads in ambush and i don't have any fun there.
I guess my biggest problem is that i usually run heavy suits and some matches go really bad with 3 kills 10 deaths. And i don't stop using Adv gear even if the match goes wrong. I mean, if everyone switches to cheap gear it's going to be even worse, isn't it?
Until 1.4 i have always been isk positive but now my wallet is going down step by step. It's not a lot and i can always go for free fitts but somehow this feels wrong. I mean, i-Śm thinking about going proto heavy or logi soon but thats even more isk for a fitting that's a little bit better. (btw heavys die way to fast compared to the dropsuit cost ;) )
So, am i the only one having this problem? Am i doing something wrong? (Do i have to join a corp and do PC in order to switch to proto? Should i be in the winning team more often?) Do you switch to cheap fittings if the match goes wrong or do you stay with your Adv/Proto gear? Do you stay in your corp squad in order to die less? Do you use the best fitt you can and keep your wallet stable. Or do you go cheap and get rich? ;) |

PC pays. Well over a million ISK per win. The problem is that PC is locked down unless you join a corporation who is controlling PC. So if you go into a PC and lose, your lose suits and you gain nathan...and I do mean, nathan.
What you doing wrong is that you continue to use advanced gear when you're losing. So not only are you paying out for each suit, you also don't make enough money in that match to pay for the suits you expired. So you come out in the red.
Your best bet is to design a cheap fit that you can use to make money. For instance, I use a BPO suit with a GEK and M1 locus nades. I do ambush and sometimes objective based modes. But mainly ambush because its quick. No matter what I keep running the cheap fits when I'm farming.
So I would set a certain time block when you do nothing but ambush and run cheap fits
And remember, if you're starting to lose, switch to your cheap fits.
No I don't have to stay in a corp squad to die less, its better to run in a squad but I've found lone wolf is a nice training tool so that when I do join a squad, I'm in full monster mode, terrorizing my opponents even worse than when I went solo. |

Ive recently started to loose ISk, before i could keep a close to 0 deaths game but with the hitbox changes i bite the Dust quite allot more, even running a solo KDR of 6-7 in matches still nets me a loss (40+ kills/5-7 proto deaths) is quite allot of isk gone even if the payout is in the 400k isk numbers.
You can run solo if you got good fps skills, but you will die more.
ps: i do wonder how i would do with a 6 man squad lately :p |

This is something that I have thought about recently, I have always wondered about how much fun the games would be if everyone could just run their best gear all the time without worrying about isk. I understand there is an economy to dust and all but you spend all this time gathering SP to use awesome equipment but in order to make a good profit you kinda need to run standard fits or freebies. I usually run good adv fits at around 50k but when you get up against equal opponents even dying 4 times kinda ruins your payout for the match.
I cant complain I suppose I have never had isk issues but the payouts just don't feel right. |

If all gear would pay for itself, the game would become even more "grind to win". Right now the high end gear is roughly balanced by the fact that you either can't run it in every match, or at least you have to be super cautious not to die. The balance seems about right to me.
The only thing that bothers me is that it encourages bringing out your best gear only in favourable situations, to milk the match for all it's worth... While in an even or losing battle, people switch to their cheap gear and thus exacerbate the situation. That's the part of the game design that is broken IMO, and could do with some serious consideration. I don't know if there is a good answer to it though, other than to find alternatives to public matches (PC is not enough!!). |

Breaking it out you have control over...
* Your game type -- Skirmish, Domination, Ambush, PC, FW * Your play style -- "I like to play heavy" * The level of gear you fit -- "I can't afford to run proto..." * If you play in a Squad * If you play with a Corp
The most common solutions when you have play time limits are to
* Switch to cheaper suits * Change play style * Change the game mode * All at once -- as Michael Arck suggested

But a lot of the time fooling around -- even if it's not in the core spirit of the game *cough*murder taxi*cough* can be fun and cheap. And maybe branching out -- sniper, medic, whatever -- could help find another fun niche to play in and still make money.

Maybe we could have loss insurance based on the cost of the suits you deploy. After some tipping point, the sponsor message comes up and promises to reimburse all isk and AUR costs until the end of the match...though a system like this would be easily gamed, it might encourage the losing team to hold their ground. |

Errm Good players in proto suits yes, I am fully aware, trust me. Average-new players in Adv gear (What OP was actually talking about) will not, and will require teamwork to rectify this shortfall. |

I have lost as many as 10 proto suits, cost 150k+ each, in one match.
However, I never start an ambush in a proto suit, unless some of my has already deployed, as you sometimes spawn in a pack of enemies.

Im also a heavy but currently they're really hard to get kills with and stay alive for more than six encounters. |

I run solo and I am usually at the top of almost all leader boards unless I am playing my sniper fit. Last week I made 20 Million in the good. This week I am already 5 million in the good and climbing. I have a rule never drop below 150 Million ISK, so I make a suit that is less than 25K and build 100 and run them until they are gone. I mark the number of ISK left over once I do this and tell myself I will not drop below this number and push myself to work hard and accept sacrifices if they are worth the payout. If your team is getting owned do not give up, but come up with a new tactic that will cost you less suits at the moment. But if your team is on the cusp of winning, do not hold anything back and go for it and D*** the ISK. I am at 175+ Million ISK and should have 200 Million by next week, its all about budget vs. payout. Some battles I will go 26-0 and have over 1000 WP and only get 90K ISK, other time I will go 12-6 with 700WP and get 300K. Not sure how the math is worked out so I just roll with the punches. Good luck and I hope I helped in some way or another. |

It's extremely subjective, but I have a couple hints for you.
But first I want to answer your questions:
Personally, I'm not having too many problems and I mostly run a CK.0 with ADV weapons and equipment (light, sidearm, grenade and scanner/hives), Complex shield extenders, ADV repper and STD basic plates. That's my suit for 90% of the time. I don't run PRO weapons in public matches, but this suit is still expensive.
Is this my best suit? No, but it is the best I'd ask for a public.
Do I switch to a cheaper fitting if I run into any strong opposition? No.
Do I make money running this suit? No.
Do I run out of money with this suit? No.
If I die twice in a match I'm probably ISK negative, but not by much. Most of the time I die 0-2 times per match, so I'm not losing ISK. However, sometimes the match turns into a perfect hell and I might lose up to 5 suits. These battles suck the ISK I've earned without dying, so my wallet is pretty much stable. The number of kills is not that important, since they have only a limited impact on your final reward. The best goal is not to die, at least for me.
Playstyle is important. I enjoy playing solo as much as running with a squad, but my playstyle does change. There's no way I'm running straight to the battle at the very start of the match, if I'm alone. I play defensively, I try to make a general idea of the battle (what kind of teammates? what kind of enemies? where are they going? what are they doing? Which team is pushing/killing the most? Is my team really trying or they just snipe? which weapons in the killfeed?) before rushing. Instead, when I run with a good squad, I'm much more aggressive. Winning the match is cool, I agree, but if you play solo you must accept there are times when you can't change the battle by yourself... and you can't really count on your random teammates. True story. So yes, playstyle is important and running with a good squad really does help going ISK positive. Keep in mind that there's a huge difference between a "squad" and a "good squad". Joining a random squad doesn't help in that way.
The remaining 10% of the time I just run a cheap fitting to make money and here comes my suggestion:
-As someone suggested, find an effective cheap fitting and use it to farm ISK. I find the Assault G-1 particularly good, thanks to the impressive amount of HP you can get from cheap armor plates and their low CPU/PG cost.
-Pro-tip: You have three character slots. If you want to stay competitive with your main character but you don't want to lose ISK, make a second character and spam Militia suits. If you start to find the game frustrating because Militia suits are paper, upgrade some pieces of equipment of your choice to STD level (even your dropsuit, if you want. An STD assault/logi costs about 3.000 ISK, which is nothing) If your final dropsuit costs less than 10.000 ISK, you will make tons of ISK no matter what. -> Send ISK to your first character. -> Enjoy.

Here are 2 tips I use to bank ISKies.
1. Starter fit + K/17 nanohive = 6,000ish ISK per fitting. This is nothing fancy. I look at it as playing hard mode, where the only goal is not to die. Play like this for a few weeks and you will absolutely murder people in a Protosuit! :)
2. Buy up 100 suits. And don't buy anything else until they are gone. By the time I use the 100 suits I've made back my ISK and then some on top.

Build up your fitting skills so you can run an adv gun with decent mods on a STD or BPO frame. You can still play as a heavy, just make some cost effective fits. The game is designed so you don't use your best stuff all the time. It's actually the most compelling feature of DUST. You've got players fighting cautiously in their expensive fits which is a lot similar to how a real firefight would take place in the future. If I'm getting pubstomped and I can take out a bunch of the enemy's expensive suits, I can still win the ISK war even though I lost the match. The goal is to give the enemy a Pyrrhic victory. |

My usual advanced fit costs 35K. If I die five times that's 175K lost but I usually make around 250K. I haven't varied more than 5 million ISK from the last CCP buy back of all out stuff, either up or down.
I keep some prototype fits on hand for those days that I don't care if I lose money and sometimes I run in all standard gear for the challenge. It all balances out in the end.
I'm thinking about working on dropships more. That'll fix my money balance problems for sure. |
