the answer is stability and reliability
Beucase of how long it takes to fully skill into a weapon and how oftin weapons go back and fourth in usefullness the AR has been the safe weapon to pick and run since the game began.
almost everyone has skilled into the AR.
investing SP at this point is a gamble, you never know if what your skilling into will still be viable by the time youve invested months to max it out.
and this results in people staying on the safe side of things sticking to the AR in order to have the security of knowing their playstyle will never have to change.
not only that but every player reguardless of race starts with the AR, so they naturally stick to it since its what they first get used to.
its not that the AR is OP its that its the only safe weapon to spec into, the one that wont change and will always be viable.
that combined with its jack of all trades nature is whats creating the AR prevalance we have now.
Stop the AR- VS - Specialist weapons war guys.
its just the natural result of how the game is presented to new players, and the result of the rapid changes the game keeps going under.

So it's ok 2 nerf al the other guns/stuff but the AR?
This is just a pathetic try to justify that the AR with the AA as it is now is OP .
I have a suggestion wy don't we undo al the guns nerf that was done BEFORE AA came into play. |

you should probably read a post before you comment.
no buffing or nerfing was mentioned.
aim assaist is turned off... it doesnt exsist they took away its magnetism a few days ago.
i dont friggen use the AR dumbass, and this isnt a pro AR thread.
this is an explanation of people behavior, the source of the ARs popularity and even if it was nerfed... you would STILL see the AR as the most popular weapon becuase of these factors.
this thread has nothing to do with the strength of the AR as a weapon. |

To be fair the AA is not only a buff for the GAR its a buff for all weapons that benefit from it. And besides commom believes the AR got nerf rounds as well two in chromosome (well one and a half ^^) and one (and a half) in uprising as well... |

ive been here since closed beta and the reign of missle dropships.
AR QQ threads have exsisted since the begining.
AA is turned off right now... so dont even bring that up here.
and yes most people used the AR before aim assist |

Or you know it might be hit detection, since MD hit detection was fixed the same time flaylock was released, yet the ar struggled with hit detection all the way to .4
But humour me this, why did no one complain when hit detection for the ar was broke, was it prehaps the weapon was a closer semblance to balance back then? When yoj could peek round a corner with out getting 50 ar rounds in your face, you could actually run across 20m of terrain before being butchered?!
Im not saying the old ar was perfect, it prehaps could have done with a little more power BACK THEN however now its too powerful, and so is the scrambler (a little less so, but still too much), the sweetmspot exsists somewhere between the 30% dps from .3 and 90% dps of .4, I would say between 75-85% of its current power would be perfect.
But then you need to buff the shotgun, sniper up a little!! |

The MD works perfectly fine.. the same as before 1.4, and the only improvement with the hit detection is the Aim-assist. |

the issue isnt weather its OP or not...
the issue is that because of the massive changes back and fourth in weapons the AR is the only option if you want any build stability and want a SAFE invetment for your skillpoints. and a build that will be viable no matter what match/map/ or suit you use.
this thread isnt defending the AR its attacking it from another direction.
if you cant identify a thread that pointsing out PROBLEMS with the AR development and instead cry "stop defending the AR" in a thread thats about FIXING IT then you have no right to comment on the situation.

I think its a little pointless agonising about a placeholder weapon. I know CCP wanted to give everyone something familiar but I think they should have just gone with their own style and made it as intended right from the start. They don't have to be like all the other games.
Or else they could have started with the Minmatar combat rifle as that is the one they envisioned as the standard/staple for the game like they said at fanfest |

Well I also happen to disagree on your points anyway.
MD was a fine and safe investment, which hasn't been changed since .1 ScR is a safe investment, hasn't changed since uprising The AR is going to get changed to the GAR so in reality it was the worst investment, because you skilled into a placeholder weapon, which is GUARANTEED to change in the next couple of months!!
its common among noobs indeed for the reasons you stated, but if you think that same logic applies to vets who have enough sp to proto multiple weapons, you've got another thing coming!!

Right now ONLY the full auto AR's are working, the rest of them are USELESS... TRY TO USE AR's before you speak of them.

AR's DOES have kick/recoil, you can't controle it after 25-30 rounds.
AR's DOES have despersion, the tactical AR's are the worst of all weapons in the game.
The breach AR's, do you EVER se anyone use them ? NO they got nerfed SO BAD they are USELESS.
The burst AR's, do you se anyone use them ? HELL NO they are even more USELESS.
The tactial AR's, LOL, there was never a problem with the tactical AR's, there was a problem with players usein modded controllers to abuse the ROF, ALL that was needed to do was lower the ROF, but all you whiners had to get them nerfed even more, more kick, more disp, lower clip size to 18 rounds, etc. They are also almost usel+¬ss now to.
You can also use a modded controller to abuse the CSCR, but that is the weapon ALL the whiners, lying basterds and cry babys use, so no one talks about nerfing SCR's....
Btw. this was NOT a post about nerfs LOL.
I got the AR skills simply for this reason: When i started to play back in beta, there where only 2 assault weapons, 1. the laser, 2. the assailt rifle. I play for Caldari in Eve online so it was clear to me that i wanted to play Caldari in Dust 514 to, as i know about racial bonuses from Eve, i know that Caldari and Gallante use the same weapons, railguns and blasters, and thats the reason i have AR's on my Caldari suit, it fits my race, lasers DONT...

Hay, I use the burst AR. Ima Gallente, and when you stack two comp damage mods on the burst it's actually a fairly decent weapon, very accurate, good rate of fire, the cycle reputation (3,3,3) makes it easy to track and place your shots, it has better zoom fidelity and slightly better range, it's a good weapon (I wouldn't use it without atleast two damage mods though). I like the Alottek, that thing really puts out the rounds, but I mostly use the gk-13. Really I use the Tac, burst, and assault, just about evenly (use them situationally) when I am playing a slayer role, but most of the time I am playing as a logi, and mostly with that I just use the exile because it is a blueprint, and the assault is the easiest to use in close quarters, and when you only got one weapon you have to make the most of it. |

Exile is a standard weapon, Alloteck is a proto weapon, but we still rather use the Exile. You say you only use Alloteck with minimun 2 complex dmg mods.

No I am saying that I REALLY like how the weapon handles but I can't kill anything with it with out atleast two damage mods, but that there are situations where I perfer using the burst over the assault even when I'm using damage mods on both simply because the way the weapon handles alows me to put people down more easily in certain situations. |

I still find it funny that people think aim assist was turned off or down. Fixes to hit detection combined with a reasonable amount of target adhesion resulted in a greatly reduced time to kill and a wild over reaction by some players. It's the change in tactics that makes it seem like aim assist has changed.
As mentioned in earlier posts CCP Logibro has confirmed that AA has not changed since 1.4 was deployed. During testing of passive scanning last night I saw target adhesion in operation. Its pretty freaky watching your gun track but it doesn't last long. The magnetism is really weak and in a regular firefight its influence is low. In a controlled situation with a target moving slowly the effect is more apparent. |

This explains why people START with the AR, yes. But it doesn't explain why they , even at PC level, depend on it so heavily. The AR is THE gun, and it is easy to use, but should be rather weak in some area or another to combat the extreme ease-of-use. When the range nerf hits in 1.5, or 1.6 if they held it back with the other weapons stuff, we'll see tons of people abandon ship into shark-filled waters once they realize they're using a Blaster :3 |

The amount of times a HMG heavy will be in his optimal is drastically lower than the amount of times an AR user will be.
I just find it kind of funny how a weapon like the HMG requires you to dictate your engagements, yet the heavy is the only suit not capable of dictating its engagements. Lots of rolling around in LAVs |

In this situation, the Boundless only has more DPS on paper. The HMG has far greater dispursion when placed side-by-side with the Blaster Rifle, and it also has less range for some reason only CCP knows. As range stats are not visible by us, and have only been determined by fumbling around on Oceania, any player who comes from EVE who thinks projectile >rangwise> Blaster or has otherwise been unable to find the buried range threads will be understandable flummoxed. |

Well what do you expect? The weapon has a projectile arc, low RoF, can even kill you in close quarters (these are all intended factors). It's a pain in the *** to use and it is suposed to be. This is a weapon for people looking for a challenge, there is nothing wrong with this weapon, it kills people just fine when used/aimed properly (in fact I think there may be some kind of fall off damage bug for explosions, which means that it is functioning better than it should be). If there is any problem at all here it is operator error. |

I agree with the original post. People went into AR because it's familiar. You also have options. Full auto, semi, burst, short and long range. This isn't about a nerf, it's just stating the obvious. |

Last I ran the numbers, Dust had 14 weapon types - across all niches. The AR kills more often than 10 of those combined. Yeah, that's a problem. You're right though, there is no point to using any other weapons.

people have no idea what balance is, and yet they are fueding over it.
this thread was as neutral as i could make it, stating simple obvious facts that cant really be denyed, it IS why ARs will always be popular.
i diddnt even say it was a bad thing that they are popular, i actually like the balance we have now.
ARs of the various races should probably be popular, its just obvious now becuase we dont have all the racial varients, once we have an AR for all the races and not just two things will even out and start to feel nice.

Well put in the the missing weapons and give players a respec... problem solved... Well in most cases, i for one will still go for blaster's and railguns, but that has something to do with race, and future racial bonuses. |
