Colonialism, and it was only tried in many ways it continues and continues to fail. But I doubt we really want to get into an in depth discussion about that if you don't want to derail this thread completely.
Though I would note that the First Nations within the continent of America had some incredibly diverse nations with exceptional technology, social structures and capacities beyond what the current state of the Americas. The Iroquois governmental system was the basis for the US constitution after all. Though they messed it up by implementing it as a patriarchal system instead.
