First of all I have to mention how painful it was for me to be away from the community for so long, I can't believe I missed some of the rage that makes the community so great.
Now back to topic, I have made some research while I was off-grid and what I found was pretty interesting some of these info I found without actually 'researching' and those compelled me to write this thread you are reading now.
1-Soma It turns out that some of these names really have interesting origins and props to CCP for just finding sci-fi names with historic roots. The word 'Soma' comes from the (very) old religion of Hinduism, and dates back to 6000+ BC and 'Soma' is actually a part of their many rituals, and it is described as a vedic ritual drink and known to cause euphoria which might as well be due to the psychostimulant properties which causes high amount of dopamine and other dope stuff!
The weird part of this, at least for me, is the fact that I found out about Soma while I was reading about methylphenidate which is a part of the popular amphetamine category as the name is so familiar you might have noticed. This drug however isn't 'cooked' by meth-heads for meth-heads and is actually used to treat ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)
2-Sica This bad-boy dates back to ancient Rome where gladiators fought each other for pompous Romans, freedom and quite possibly blood. Sicas are daggers or rather short-swords that were used very widely throughout the region at the era while it is unknown if Romans actually used this weapon or not, the Sica is of Ilryian , Dacian and Thracian of origin; Dacia being the modern day Romania and Thrace being the place that Spartacus and my great grandmother was born yay.
Sicas also have a distinctive 'curve' on its blade which made it stronger and more bad-ass which assassinrs loved to use in their everyday life. Finally the word 'Sica' means cut, awesome.
3-Madrugar Altough I owe my Portugeese friend 'Theo' (sorry if I misspelled) which told me that the word 'Madrugar' meant Dawn, that's right Dawn.
I got my answer but nevertheless I found a decent Portugeese dictionary and looked up Madrugar and I found numerous different meanings for it here is some of my findings. Early-Riser Early Precursor
So it isn't rooted within ancient history but has a certain ring to it, early-riser? damn... Which makes me believe that there is some mythology behind this madrugar/early-riser; I will be doing some more research on this and post my findings here.
4-Gunnlogi I knew that Gunnlogi was going to be somewhere in nordic history so I tried to find as much as I can about it though I need CCP to help me here please!
From what I could find it means something within the lines of war-flame, combat-flare and battle-blaze and is the name of a sword after the initial search I've contacted a history geek who knows quite a lot about vikings but it the mean time this is all I could find CCP HELP ME!
and that's all for now I will be posting about Dropships and Lavs soon so check back.

If there's any link between Madrugar and the portuguese language (what was that with geese? ) then it must be said that it's in verb form. So, it would translate as "to dawn". In this verb form, "Madrugar" would actually mean "to get/wake up early". To specifically mean "dawn", it would need to be "Madrugada". I still bet on some other ancient origin, though.
Btw, for me Onikuma was always kinda evident. I know enough japanese to recognize it as "Demon Bear". |

and i doubt the amar would have atlas as the name of thier MCC. they seem more biblical instead of mythological to me. thats why we need to think inside the book.

I just remembered to add that when it's said that Madrugar can mean "early-riser" in portuguese, that's also a bit incorrect. That would be "Madrugador" or "Madrugadora" depending if you mean a masculine or feminine subject. |

Caldari are bladed weapons, Gallente are hindu/buddhist deities and other fantastic, mythological things. ... for the most part. So much variation in the naming scheme
Saga is a short sword Gunnlogi is an indo-iranian sword. Sagaris (caldari proto tank) is a long curved sword. Chardybus is a sea monster
Vayru (I'm sorry I think I spelled that wrong) is a hindu god...of... crap forgot. Baloch is a group of people in Iran. Limbus is a border or edge. .. but usually referencing the eye.

Caldari dropships are all snakes. thought incubus was a female demon. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure its the exact opposite of a succubus.
A incubus would seduce ladies and a succubus would do dudes. |

I agree wolf, you'd think the 'violence-oriented' names would stick with the minmitar, but then again can't really use birds for caldari tanks. Nice to see gallente are mostly in track with the Greek dropships and mythologixal tank names.
Surya, that's the gal-proto tank I was thinking of. Thanks brain for being bad. |

Charybdis isn't just a sea monster.
In Greek mythology, Charybdis was once beautiful and the daughter of Poseidon and Gaia. She destroyed so many coastal cities and lands with tidal waves, and typhoons, for her father's water kingdom, that Zeus became enraged and changed her into a monster.
Her cursed form is that of a huge underwater creature whose face is all teeth and whose arms and legs are flippers. When she sucks water in she creates large whirlpools capable of dragging a ship into her stomach.

COrrect good sir. I'm at work on my phone so walls of text are not an option.
This also fuels my suspicion that there is no real semblance of naming coherency in DUST or a coding error that gave the wrong race the vehicles. |
