A while ago, I posted a complaint in a thread warning about an AFK system that would operate as the one described coming in 1.4
For those who didn't read it, basically the way I approach winning battles is by embracing the commander role (that was promised but unsurprisingly never given) by sitting in the MCC or atop a hill, crouched, relaying important orders to my team as I look at the map.
I find this type of strategy to be hugely beneficial as it gives the leader a very good top down view of the map, all friendly troops, and their positions. From this viewpoint, I can easily and more accurately relay where people need to be and what points to defend or take.
However, with this lazy new "Idle Anti-AFK" system that will be implemented, it very frustratingly breaks what I consider (and many others who use it) to be one of the best tools a team leader could utilize for important strategic gameplay. Clearly you can see the benefits in important battles like Planetary Conquest. I know I'm not the only one that does this too and urge CCP to take their new system back to the drawing board.
P.S. I'll try looking for the original thread. |

If you sit atop a hill could you not take a sniper rifle with you and shoot? Snipers are the best squad leaders if you ask me. |

historically the best leaders are the ones that aren't afraid to get their hands dirty.
there is nothing stopping you from pacing behind a squad. I've even used my logi to safeguard a Ground Commander before, it also means the GC has access to uplinks to be placed near where they are or to order their pocket logi to rove out and help nearby troops.
Get thine feet on the ground... there is no Commander suit yet :P, you are just a glorified Lieutenant until it hits :P |

Sniper aren't the best SL. No real assault player wants to take orders from a sniper. Lol a sniper? Yea right. Gimme someone in the firefight to lead. And to me, I'm glad the commander role isn't given. It's not needed. Besides, everybody going to want to play that role. Unfortunately not everybody is good leaders. With scanners, scouts and on ground intel, the commander role is obsolete. It's like playing NFL Head Coach. Where's the fun in that? I feel if the commander role is implemented, they better go to some tactical school. |

The reason i say snipers make the best squad leaders is because if your assault, you cant see behind the wall where snipers can. squad leaders should have a greater view of the battlefield to direct troops etc, not just who can rack up the most war points. A snipers role is not to shoot everything that moves but to relay information. |

The patch notes were to me, pretty vague. Personally I believe their anti-AFK measure will just be a bit of code that checks the last input from the players controller and if that input is greater than whatever time they impose then it kicks them. So basically I believe as long as you move the a stick or push a button every once in a while you won't be kicked.
I believe this because it's a more asinine way to go about it and CCP has already demonstrated that sometime they just don't put much thought into things. If this is the method they use then it most certainly won't stop AFK'ing but it also won't stop you from doing what you've been doing either.
If CCP really wanted to snuff out AFK'ers they would prevent them from earning ISK & WP's from behind their teams redline. |

Better and easiest fix would have been: No SP awarded while in the MCC. You want to AFK, do it on the ground so at least you have a chance to be killed and booted. |

Hate to burst your bubble, but your playstyle was going to be ending soon anyway. CCP is disabling shared squad vision with the same patch, so you'll have less map data than you enjoy now.
But if you want to play similar to the way you did before, and even contribute more than you had previously, there's a way to do it:
Train Active Scanners way up. Sit on a hill and spam that sucker, then go into your map mode. You'll get your enemy position data back, legitimately contribute to the ground game, and won't get kicked.
Take a sniper rifle with you and fire a pot shot every 60 seconds or so you're gold. |

I wouldn't exactly call this a big loss. One less armchair-quarterback AFK in the MCC.
Sounds to me like it'll be working as intended. |

Anybody could be "commander" if it didn't take so damn long to pull the map up or even look at teams to see who is talking.

Wait until they put in an actual commander role (they said they had plans for it like driving the MCC)
Other than that, iff 1 guy loses his ability to play pretend commander in order to cut down a ton of afk'ing, then so be it. |

But they will be useless to the team, they're not gonna fight. What if most of my teammates are AFK farming? No SP awarded sounds good but there's barely anyone fighting. And others players that are not AFK farmers can't join the battle. It makes more sense to be kicked out of the game and let other people who are not AFK farmers join and fight. |

Question #1: wouldn't the new limited intel sharing among team negatively impact this play style as well? Question #2: did you receive warning before you were kicked?
I'd also like to point out that you're the first I've ever seen "lead from the back" in this way. Interesting choice. |
