If you "sweep" in the second or 2 while scanning, does it cover the whole area? For instance the 5 second one if i were to spin 360 deg, will it have scanned all 360 or have a "pulse effect" and miss increments? |

OP, this is the way it should be. this is a team game, so squad up with someone. you might even start getting orbitals.
we cannot balance a weapon/equipment piece simply because you are not taking advantage of simple things like a squad. |

Patch notes says "Made deployed enemy equipment detectable with the active scanner", but anyone already able to detec them 100m away with passive scanner (and we can see them in map mode on entire map) that doesn't looks like it's working as intended. Is enemy equipment will be more stealthy (harder to detect, invisible in map mode) in 1.4?
That's one of reason why ppl spam everywhere with drop uplinks... they currently too easy to detect & destroy.
Btw poke Wang, i promoted him to be responsible for 1.4 ninja nerf\buff notes, we still don't have them :D |

I'd also like to know this. Unless I put my uplinks in very hard-to-reach places, they almost always get destroyed long before they're spent. It's way too easy to find enemy deployables in the current build.

I can confirm this. I think this will be the preferred way to use them. However I don't think they 'fully activate' until the V animation is fully spread. It seems to have a bit of a delay until the scanning starts, so if you plan on sweeping less than the 100% of the area around you, then you'd want to start a bit to the side of where you plan to mainly scan so that the delay won't cause you to miss part of the target area while you spin around.
Also, especially for the more narrow scanners. You should realize that the scanner scans in a cone shape. Initially I realized I was thinking that I was mentally thinking of it more in a kind of 'pie slice' shape. This means that something could be above you and 'within scan range' but not inside the cone. The scanner will not indicate the presence of these things because it wasn't within the cone.
In other words, If you could draw what your scanned area looks like after spinning 360 degrees, it would be a cylinder, but with a very flat cone shape extruded from the top and bottom. Only a scanner that would scan 180 degrees or more could spin only horizontally AND scan a complete sphere around himself.

Yeah, I'm hoping that as I've suggested on Cross Atu's 'rewards progression' thread, that STD and ADV gear should require STD to ADV scanners to detect, but mostly STD. While some ADV and most PRO gear should take mostly ADV and and some PRO scanners to find.
So, scouts would have a secondary role. If this IS how equipment works, and they DO reward us eventually for destroying deployables, then scouts, especially with precision mods, could have the easiest time locating and destroying deployed equipment.
What might be troubling at first, if some equipment is 'stealthy' is if/when you scan, and you can't detect equipment or dropsuits, will the scanner be able to tell the difference? Will we get an 'margin of error rate' even if we can't completely detect equipment. |

In my experience, "sweeping" with a scanner will result in red-dots blipping temporarily on HUD and TacNet. The blips decay after a very short duration. To answer your question, I have not observed missed increments from spinning too fast.
So sweeping is a decent way to check surroundings, but you won't maximize target visibility duration unless you must paint red-dots for the duration of the scan.
It's a good practice to sweep and locate a red-pile, wait for recycle, then paint that red-pile for a full scan duration. Give it a try if you aren't following; you'll see what I mean.
Hope this helps,

Actually scanners seems to scan in an infinite vertical plane, I have hit people with the scanner that were like 5 meters in front of me, but 50 meters above me. |

I've hat fits utilizing 2 scanners for this reason. A longer skinny one, and a mid range longer duration one. |

I most commonly play either real scout, or "light", dropsuits.
I've noticed that upllinks are MUCH easier to see in scout suits, than default ones. In the default STARTER gear, even when they appear on my radar, many times I can barely see them, even when I get practically on top of them. Sometimes, the are only partially faded in.
In contrast, when in my scout suit, they pretty much always show up as shiney beacons with great bit glowy auras :)
So... only easy to find, if in a scout suit, seems like. Although for consistency, if it barely shows up when looking, it should probably not be showing up so much on minimap rader either.

What would be the point of the longer scanning modules then if they didn't consistantly scan the entire duration. If '5 seconds' really means 'half a second 3 times during a 5 second period', if you think the tacnet is confusing now wait until then.
One alternative would be, make all the scanning angles smaller and balance based on the whole idea that people WILL sweep their scanners.
Or you could have scanners work a little different than they will in 1.4. You could lengthen the scan time and target visability time of all scanners, but you could make it so that the scanner has to 'lock on' to its targets. You would scan an area, and "see" red dots, but the scanner wouldn't make them remain visible, until they were under the scanner for a certain amount of time. The scanner would effectively be 'locking' them. The difference between the scanner's precision and the target's profile would determine 'lock time'.
This would prevent sweeping as you'd probably have to point and hold to keep targets visible after the duration of the scan. It would also allow for a little more variety in the utility of scanners as some could be used just to get the approximate location of targets, others would be good at quickly fixing on targets and then stowing the device and continuing to track them as you pursue.
This latter idea would also open up the counter-ewar possibilities as a being scanned and being locked would be two separate things. If you are locked you could be tracked, if you are being scanned, you are detected, but not locked. A kind of handheld sensor disruptor pulse could be an effective tool at targetted sensor disruption. If you know you've been locked you could point toward the scanner and deactivate his lock, re-hiding your team members. |

The residual image effect acts like a function of the scan duration.
- If you scan a target directly for the full duration of the scan, it will light up for a good bit of time.
- If you sweep 360 all targets will disappear sooner than the time listed.
- Scouts fade faster than medium, mediums fade faster than heavy.
Its kinda like radiating the target, where the residual activity is a function of mass and length of exposure.
