The reason i ask if 1.4 will bring more players is because it seems that DUST 514 in general has an average player base of 4000 players per day .
This is how i see the player base of 4000 average : 4000 player average divided 4 regions is 1000 players per region, divide 1000 by 8 as an average of hours and you get around 125 players average at any given time which i personally think boils down to around 83 players at any given time as a rough average
I started to look into this when noticing over a space of 3-4 hours of gaming almost always the same player names and groups. So basically this game is dead or am i wrong Will the 1.4 patch save DUST and help increase the player base? |

What will bring new players is content, diversity, and uniqueness. We have none of these, currently CCP is working on core mechanics before any of these are added, so far we have some uniqueness due to the ISK/SP system but aside from that we are just another lobby shooter. |

No, what bring in new players is new content, not refinement of all systems, those only being in the old players that are optimistic about the game and have already invested into it to come back. It's got to be something really big and work properly to be able to bring players in and keep them playing because they want to.PVE *cough* |

Cause 80 players x 12 hours is 960 players which logged in a 12hour cycle, cause i seriously doubt we can consider the other 12 hours in a 24hour cycle due to people doing other things in life, study, work, anything else apart from being in a game. |

Yes. http://eve-offline.net/?server=dust That shows 4,000 people on at one time. Not all the time, but typically not less than 3,000.
That 4,000 is not the entire playerbase, it's how many people are on at once. There are more than just the same 4,000 people playing. |

I think thats still pathetically sad numbers. CCP only seems to have a 3% or so player retention rate. |

OK well 4000 is stil divided by 4 for the 4 regions = 1000 players per server. So if we have 1000 players on a server why do i see 80% of the player names being the same in a duration of 3-4 hours? That doesn't look like 1000 players to me. |

You dont get it, theres around 4k online at any given time with exception to downtime. That means the playerbase is right around 12 thousand players. if not slightly more or less. |

I can prove it , loosely...my corp has almost 2000 members, with maybe 500 alts and inactive. at any given time there are an estimated 100 players online, and i can do 10 or so matches lone wolfing without ever seeing another d uni, and different teams everytime...I think that proves your math wrong... |

I think your math is a little off, 4000 average players means that we have 4000 players online at any given time. I look at it like this, if we have 4000 players on average and most players play an average of 3-5 hours divide 24 by 4, then take 6 x 4000 = 24,000 and that is the amount of unique players, I believe, play Dust 514 every day.
most people play this **** 3-5 hours a day? DAYUM!
3-4 games and my ps2 nostalgia has definately been sated.

Well this here is bad math on the simple mere fact is nearly impossible to make a correlation but because most MMO's HIDE the crap out of subscription numbers and active player numbers it makes this extremely difficult to make any sense of anything. Certainly something I wouldn't submit to my statistics professor but here goes.
Eve Online is known to have 500,000 subscribing (consumed for account plexes, and monthly real cash payments) accounts. Population is about 40k players based on the past month here
http://eve-offline.net/?server=tranquility
So based on this it can be poor logic divulged that the average peak is about 1/12th of the current active population. Which means that in order to maintain these numbers people have to log about 2 hours a day which is a fairly common mmo play session for a semi-casual.
Using that information it can be said that Dust's total active population is about 50,000 players throughout the day give or take.
Now the daily metric is also a bad thing to try to count as well because people's behaviors changes throughout the week and even day proof evident in the previous and this chart http://eve-offline.net/?server=dust
Like right now is around peak time. 12 hours from now server is offline. Day after cap reset is more populated than most other days. Where as in eve its GMT sunday that has the highest participation. |

It's really a multi-step process. Before content gets a chance to seduce peeps, core mechanics will drive them away.
Right now, players leave this game long before they see all of the limited content or experience all the game modes.
There's a lot to take in, a lot to puzzle through, and a lot to adapt to, because DUST isn't built with the usual FPS sensibilities we're all so familiar with. And this isn't a bad thing.
So these players who are interested stick around and start making the effort to understand what the hell is going on. We all know from experience that early days in DUST can be rough on a player. But that's cool too, many peeps enjoy the challenge and can see the obvious potential we have here, so they take their beatings and soldier on.
And then CCP betrays them. In the worst possible way.
So here is our potential new citizen of New Eden, invested in this strange hybrid game where the developer is asking immigrants to make an exceptional effort to adapt and learn, where there is virtually no hand-holding, no walkthrough, no tutorial, no opportunity to practice.
And the player begins to understand the fitting screen, the skill system, the HUD, the TACNET, the weapons systems, the maps, the equipment, the squad tools, the voicecomms, all the while going hands-on with the game......and it gradually dawns on our player that the game, at its most fundamental level, does not work. It's broken, not finished, half-baked.
The first thing players prolly notice is the AFKers. They don't understand the dynamics behind it, but everybody recognizes it as deeply lame - for both the community and the developer.
Some time after this this awkward aiming, lag, detection, the sticky terrain and objects, the clunky, slow unreliable controls reveal themselves.
And that's it. By the cold light of day most players will realized that they got duped by a three dressed up as a nine, that there's a lot of other fish in the sea, and they move on, prolly warning their friends not to make the same mistake they made.
But for some poor slobs, it's too late. They've seen below the surface, they've somehow managed to fall in love against their will. They can't stand to stay but they can't bear to leave. These sad creatures are called bittervets. In DUST we sometimes call them 'Noc's', i'm not sure why.
It's only one scenario. There are others but the one presented covers the bulk of cases, i'd wager.
The good news is that CCP is attempting to address the core issues in patches 1.4 and 1.5.
If they're successful, then the content will have a solid chance of keeping players.

We're going to have to wait for the marketing push (they haven't even started yet) as well as new content releases. You are a fool if you think the changes in 1.4 are going to bring in more players. Not to say 1.4 is a bad patch, but it's a refinement patch which appeals to current players, not new players. |
