character is only good for backstory if you roleplay (meh) as in eve, any race can train any ship. |

They sort of did this in Eve. People just gravitated toward the one race that incidentally gave better bonuses.
Otherwise, you are going to get into a racism war.
What, are we going to make Minmatar better at knife fighting and basketball? Lol. |

Honestly I think it would be kinda interesting if you got a slight discount for using your racial specific items. IE 10% less isk cost to using an item that is specific to the race you choose. Honestly its not much but just would be something interesting. |

How i see it ... we are mercenaries, doesn't matter what tools we use to do the job. Maybe when all the races have all the Dropsuit variations, will be a different story.... i think only CCP knows that one. |

I think it's ok it does not.
You might want to be Gallente because you like the race, but you may dislike the Gallente gear's feel or just fall in love with Scrambler rifles.
I believe it's fine you have the opportunity to specialize into anything you like without disadvantages. |

I don't have a preference myself.
semperfi1999 suggested lower prices for race specific items.
Some other possibilities... In EVE there was an idea of learning skills faster on the basis of character profile choices -- so maybe different races can move through the skill trees at slightly different rates. As a variation, perhaps different initial skill packages based not only on role but on race

I believe it's fine you have the opportunity to specialize into anything you like without disadvantages. That makes a lot of sense.
An alternative view is that if you come into a game knowing you like some roles you might want to initially get an advantage in those things and branch out after you have some experience in the game. Not particularly a penalty or limitation on what you can do but a kick-start on what you've liked in the past.

Perhaps an SP encentive for racial skills and equipment...afterall, we may be mercs but we were developed and trained by the respective governments and thus have a cultural grounding in our respective races. Thus we'd be more familiar with design and implementation principals utilized by our specific race.
Perhaps a 5% discount on SP cost for any applicable race base skill or equipment specific to a given race. Admittedly, in the current environment not all racial variants of equipment are present and thus benefits may not be balanced if rolled out today.
It's been a while since I looked at EVE, but didn't you get a multiplier advantage when learning skills specific to your race? |

Resisting the urge to make racist jokes with suggested suit bonuses in this thread is unbearable.
Aside from that, I do hope race makes a difference. Even if it's just a laser rifle discount for Amarr etc. |

Eve used to have differences based on race in terms of what skills you started with, but this was removed in favor of a better new player experience. New players often don't know what the impact of skills are, so they don't have the experience to put weight into their choices and end up with a play style that doesn't match their goals. I think the same would happen in Dust where the attrition rate is reportedly high.
Instead of having race based stats, I think it is best to give new players a time limited booster for the first 1 million skill points earned (beyond the 500k you start with), akin to what Eve has done. This would allow players to earn SP more quickly to get out of the basic level quickly, but still allow players to figure out what the skills are before they spec into them. |

It doesn't tie the player to any back-story or help to make that whole long character creation process mean anything though.
If it doesn't make any real difference which race you choose why not just cut the whole thing down to "This is how the different dropsuits and mercenary quarters look -- which one do you like?" and "Male or Female avatar?" and leave it at that?

The good hing about EVE/DUST is that it isn't World of Warcraft. If I get a lvl 50 Paladin but want to try out a Summoner, I'm **** out of luck and have to make a new toon. In DUST/EVE, if I'm curious about another role I just have to spec into it.
So NO racial complications. Maybe a starting skill like Racial Dropsuit to one and Racial Rifle to 1 or somethin, but nothing major and gamechanging. |

I see no reason to have our avatar's race make any impact on gameplay. Back in the old days of Eve Online, choosing a race affected your character's qualities. Originally CCP wanted players to diversify in New Eden in terms of race selections, but allowing the race of your avatar to affect in-game play had a negative impact on New Eden.
To begin with, many new players gravitated towards the Caldari State more often than any other empire because apparently their attributes allowed for faster training of the skill books.
Coincidentally the Caldari State were well known for awesome missile damage while most other weapon types were out of balance.
Then CCP decided to take away those racial qualities and thus limited character selection to just role-play preferences only. Feel like the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few? Go Caldari. Feeling religious? Go Amarrian. Feeling rebellious? Minmatar. Feeling like a hedonistic snog? Gallente.
But the change was too late. The vast majority of the Eve population was already Caldari before the changes which also explains why Jita IV - Moon 4 Caldari Navy Assembly Plant also happens to be the primary trade hub of New Eden compared to Amarr, Dodixie, and Rens. |

Needless complication.
I picked Amarr without looking into DUST assuming they would have starter suits similar to the Punisher frigate...turns out they favour shields now (I'm blaming the Khanid influence...) and has the only starter set without any armour repair...so yeah Gallente and happy. |

No.
I was more thinking it's silly to go through all that character creation when it doesn't make any difference. What's more, it's confusing to new players. I've heard some who think they are actually choosing a different path on the basis of what race they choose.
So it seemed to me some change was in order.
Either make it mean something or make it clear it is cosmetic. I wanted to see what people thought.
