Carbon was meant for high end PCs. It melted PS3s. So they switched to Unreal.
Edit: Also learn to use the search function. :\ |

I would take decent gameplay over sparkles and lighting effects.
CCP is having enough trouble as it is getting hit detection and the 3d models to run right that they should have to worry about not blowing up my machine entirely. |

CCP has been very open by the fact that Unreal can't take the features that would be on Carbon. PS4 is pretty much the only thing that can take Carbon. |

Dust always seems to be going backwards in development with the promise that it will eventually return to where it started.
Hey guys, we have large open landscapes with giant MCCs and a bunch of air and ground vehicles! Plus a giant warbarge to explore outside of combat!
Ok, no more large landscapes and aerial fighters, but we still have the awesome moving MCCs! And only one room in the warbarge but hey it's still there!
No more moving MCC, but hey we still haves guns and a few vehicles!
Oh hey look Fan Fest, we're going to have PVE coming later this year and gas planets and boarding spaceships shortly after!
A lot of people are complaining that everything in the game now is somehow inherently broken so we're going to shift our focus, enjoy all the same stuff you've had for over a year while we tend to their every tear! |

They want to keep a ps3 version up for a few years because not everyone can afford a new game system on release. (Not made of money, and you can tell because I have not yet spent myself to death)
That said, I can't wait to see what they do with it on the ps4. |

Dust exclusive to PS3 for 1 year was supposed to be one of the things keeping people buying PS3s while everyone waits for PS4 launch. That won't work if people who want Dust are saying "we'll wait for the PS4 version".
Of course, no-one's buying PS3s for Dust at all now, so its kind of academic. |

CARBON is not just a game engine. It's also a complete gaming architecture that is used to power Eve Online. It's a very complex game engine.
Besides, CCP didn't have time to fully implement it on a large scale compared to their lab tests so they had to go with the Unreal Engine. |

all of the developers in different games talk like: we will see in the future, we have plans but we cannot talk about them we want to transition but we have 1 year contract and we are happy for now....
i've heard it in a ton of game reviews why can't CCP do the same????

It looked flat and generic. The guns and vehicles all looked like knock-offs of stuff you could buy off the shelf today, and it suffered from "brown world" more than even Battlefield 3.

You MIGHT be able to carry over your audio files, but every last visual and mechanical asset has to be built again in the new engine.
Trust me, I have some experience with this. |

You must be a wizard, go on. Back when I was part of the team working on MechWarrior Living Legends, people in our community used to ask why we didn't just take everything we had in CryEngine 2 and just drop it into CryEngine 3.
The fact of the matter is that even migrating to a newer version of the same engine, we would have had to throw everything out and start over. Every asset and every gameplay mechanic would have to be rebuilt in the new version.
Now imagine going from your own in-house engine to a completely unrelated one produced by another company. |

You must be a wizard, go on. He's right though. You can't just copy-paste from one engine into another. They both work differently. What works on Unreal won't work on Carbon because they're two completely different systems.

Yes, CCP Veritas is pretty amazing, even without his awesome beard.
However, what we're talking about is just outside the realm of possibility. You can't migrate assets across engines. |

well I wouldn`t say it would be genius to delete it (btw I`m not mocking your comment or sarcastically jibing you) so here`s hoping CCP kept it just in case. |

Now THAT would seem perfectly within the realm of possibility.
As well, given they've teased the idea of shared social spaces, I don't think a difference of engines would be an issue here. For one example, after the Trinity 2.0 upgrade, they kept the 1.0 client available for people to download who couldn't match the new specs, and both clients ran alongside each other for the next 2 years, both have all the same functionality with the only difference being what they rendered.
Given that the tech demos for Unreal 3 around the time of Gears of War 2 showcased groups of hundreds of character assets all moving through a tightly packed environment without framerate drop, I think just rending simple characters walking around, even in fairly large numbers, wouldn't be too stressful.
From what we've seen of the PS4, it could easily handle Trinity 2.0, which is the actual rendering engine of CARBON, which is their Core Technology Framework that encompasses that, their physics engine Destiny, and several other systems.
The eventual idea they stated was to have one platform that EVE, Dust, and World of Darkness all operate on. |

Why does everyone think the 2009 demo was using the carbon engine?
From 2009 there was this rumor post on dust514.org that said CCP will be using Unreal engine for this game. CCP switching engines was something that I asked CCP nothin about a few months ago and got this answer
Quote:May 03 02:55:14 Orca_Amsel hey [CCP]nothin do you know when ccp switch to unreal for dust? May 03 02:55:23 Orca_Amsel switched* May 03 02:55:38 [CCP]nothin it's been on Unreal since it was announced May 03 02:55:44 Orca_Amsel since 2009? May 03 02:55:48 [CCP]nothin yup |
