lol does the CRU use less PG than equipping one on a standard dropship? They have one more slot for more HP but less PG means I have to equip PG upgrades out of necessity.

People just like to be rewarded for their actions. Almost all multiplayer games have some kind of progression based on match performance, it's not limited to FPS. I don't know the gameplay mechanics of EVE but I could guess it has other incentives...
