It is random but I'm starting to think there might be a hidden "luck" stat we have no control over. My ALT gets salvage like mad while afking in the mcc yet my main (with about 15 mil SP) and tons of games played has only ever got 3 thales... ever...

You could always just transfer the 3 MIL ISK from your main if you wanted to jump right in. I know this is a waste of ISK just to test out dropships but dropships are an inherent waste of ISK anyways so what's the difference?

Agreed. Stick to Militia gear for a bit until you learn the game. All that stuff is skill free and cheap. Build a little nest egg of ISK and see what you like.
