I was curious about assault dropships, but they take quite a bit of SP to unlock. I had many other things I wanted to try out, so I didnt want to sink my SP into something I might not like.
I thought I'd try the standard trick of creating a tester char using your "extra" 2 character slots, along with the initial free 500,000SP, to just jump right into it and try it out.
Buyer beware! Unlike many other things, such as regular weapons, where you are easily able to do this almost without participating in a single battle.... this costs some serious bling.
Yes, the dropship itself costs something obscene like 400k. However.. buying the SKILL BOOKS, first for regular dropship, then for assault dropship, costs close to 3 MILLION ISK. Even if you're being economical, and earning straight-up 150k ISP per battle... that's still 20 battles to get the bling.
That is still be easier better than having to grind 300,000 SP on my main char. But it aint straight up "easy" either. So if you're curious about trying out assault dropships, be warned, that it's expensive in more ways than one |

Wow i'm not you but if you want assault dropships i have to warn you *sighs* this may disappoint you.
1. You're always the target even to noobs with AR.
2. Always use a afterburner as it helps escaping swarms and other threats to you.
3. Damn you gotta be a sharpshooter trying to shoot enemies but now in 1.4 they fixed the camera and its a bit easier but not so much as you are always hovering and moving slowly.
4. ALWAYS use a missile, scatter blasters and railgun is really bad i prefer the missile.
5. Try not to die, its about 1 mil isk if you lose one which is a common mistake for new beginners ESPECIALLY if you don't know how to drive a dropship.
6. Learn your dropship driving skills on a gorgon or viper or you will just crash as soon as take off as most newbies do.
Thats it you're ready and i will be looking forward seeing new dropships taking off with me (not really a bit gay) |

You could always just transfer the 3 MIL ISK from your main if you wanted to jump right in. I know this is a waste of ISK just to test out dropships but dropships are an inherent waste of ISK anyways so what's the difference? |

This is all good stuff here. One thing to keep in mind is that Assault Dropships handle much better than the militia ships. That said, you're still gonna blow up a lot of them so keep it cheap at first. |

Can you detail the best way to USE an afterburner? The wiki section

doesnt really say much, other than "Afterburners provide dropships with increased downward thrust; thrusters will be slightly more powerful"
It doesnt even indicate how MUCH of an increase you get.

A lot
That's not very enlightening :-/
On a side note: Another advantage of doing this through a new alt char as this post points out.... (and doing a transfer of the 3mil from your main char)
Is that you then get to terrorize the Academy noobs, with an assault dropship
Kinda fair though. you'll be an assault DS noob yourself, so things are almost even. Probably will die the most, from your own crashing. *cough*. |
