Ok, I've been playing Dust for about a month or so.
I understand that, just like Eve, it's a complex game that has a steep learning curve and many skills that are required to get good at the game.
However, I dont understand how for days and days and days I can end up on the losing team in each and every battle.
It's not just me, that I could handle because I could just look at it as me being new to the game and needing more skills. Instead it's just game after game of my entire team getting mowed down like dogs by elite enemy death squads.
And I never ever find myself on same side with anyone near as good. Only against them.
So far, this is how my experience has gone.
A single enemy heavy wipes out my entire squad, laughing and puffing a cigar as bullets bounce off his chest.
I come up in a heavy suit and a single enemy completely avoids all oncoming fire and beans me in the face, killing me instantly.
All one on one fights end up with me doing virtually no damage to my enemy while they take me down in less than 3 seconds. This outcome is the same even if I'm using a Gek assault rifle and my enemy is in Militia gear.
I surprise an enemy anti tank player and take him down to like 2% health. He turns a corner and as I come out to finish him off he annihilates me with his pistol.
I spawn in front of an enemy and he guns me down before I can blink.
Enemy spawns in front of me . . . he guns me down before I can blink.
I'm sure that this is where I'm going to get nothing but replies telling me how much I suck at life, but what am I doing wrong?
I applied to the Dust University, hopefully I can learn a few things there that might help, but I appreciate all advice and suggestions that anyone might be able to give,
Thanks! |

First, welcome to New Eden. Life is rough for newbros. For now, you're going to have to rely on the element of surprise. Skill into Active Scanners, an AR/SCR and grenades. Run around scanning and flanking, practice cooking grenades so that they can't be dodged, and you'll find that you gradually get more effective. Most enemies can be defeated if you come at them from behind and get them one a time. Check out Fox Gaden's excellent guides, especially the one on battlefield roles: https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=110882&find=unread I highly recommend Rogatien Merc's Flanker guide, which is linked to in Fox's battlefield role guide.
In terms of your team losing, there's nothing to be done about that. Matchmaking sucks, you'll just have to wait until you have the gear and a squad to try to turn the tide. |

When your team needs you... leave it up for them to clean their mess up i say hide behind enemy lines and save the team by hacking objectives, you see... i'm a scout so it would be easier to get around but tougher to stay alive. Sure there'd be enemies running at you when you finally hack it but if you find that they're counter hacking it i suggest remote explosives to do the job so you do get the hack. |

You should also think about enemy uplinks, they look so harmless sitting there but put your cursor over it and if it turns red theres someone there whos invisible by spawn killing and they can easily gun you down. The element of surprise is key, you never know if some heavy is gonna spawn there or a guy with plasma cannon aiming straight for your head, if you wanna avoid that you gotta use nades or remote explosives. Remember keep moving and never stop even when you are battling some guy with AR try to dodge the bullets and remember.... everyone thinks and acts the same way you can or do. |

The way I think about it is like this - This is GoldenEye. But you're not James Bond. You're one of the faceless, nameless, background infantry dudes with zero health. If you even look at Bond he will kill you. The only thing you have going for you is that you're not controlled by A.I. Be unpredictable. Don't charge into the same situation more than once. If you die doing something stupid, don't do it again. Be willing to change tactics based on what the other team is doing. And if all else fails grab a militia needle and start stabbing people for WPs... |

I too "discovered" recently i must be doing something wrong... It's about aiming... Played skirmish on my fresh alt and stayed in the red-zone (if you must say it, "YOU AFKer!", fine...) Pulled out my militia AR and begun target practice. What I've discovered was a shock to me. I can't aim at all
I'd chosen a lamp as a target and tried to aim and shoot at it (i know i can't destroy it for WPs, relax) and begun to swipe my cross hair across the scene with intention to lock it at the lamp at will. All the time it landed off the target. I fiddled with X,Y sensitivity of the controller. I have set it to 0. But it still "jumps" instead of "flows". What am i doing wrong? I am aware of right stick "speed zones" but it appears there is no "slow mode" close to the neutral position for fine tuning. Is there another way for it? How do you overcome that cross-hair "jumpiness"?
I was coping with it so far (after a fashion) and accepted my mediocre achievements but enough is enough
Note: DUST is my first FPS played with PS3 pad... I could use a mouse... but want to avoid of getting CTS |

I'm currently stuck trying to recruit new players to DUST514, as I have only managed to recruit 2 people using my link, and only one of which has reached 25,000 WP.
So I'm turning to the forums for help. I'm offering a 100 Million ISK incentive to any 'new' recruits who reach 100,000 WP, along with the standard benefits all New recruits earn.
You see I play with all BPO dropsuit loadouts and accrue in excess of 1,500 WP a game, so as you can imagine my ISK builds up pretty quick. For those of you who don't believe me I invite you to play a game against me and I'll prove that I am all BPO, as I have purchased the Mercenary, Veteran and Elite packs as well as every BPO that was available on the market up to 1.5
Im appealing to 'ALL' forum members who may know of a person with a PSN account who doesn't play DUST514, but may be enticed to join up as a 'new' recruit, for an eye watering sum of ISK. I will provide all recruits who reach 100,000WP with a 100 Million ISK reward as soon as they email me a picture of their progress.
My recruit link is available below, so please, get sharing. https://dust514.com/recruit/psgkk4/ |

Cathryn Cyaer wrote:steep learning curve Hello and welcome!
You're right, there's a long and perilous path of learning for anyone who starts playing FPS games in an online environment.
Story time: I've personally been playing Dust for a while - it's also my first console FPS - and similarly to you I was pretty much massacred in the beginning. Now a good year later I'm still rather mediocre but I manage to hold my own. This is however demonstrably not due to skillpoints and ISK. Lately I've been running miltitia assault suits on a second character that has existed for over half a year yet has absolutely *zero* skillpoints in any infantry related skills. Regardless I can walk up to enemies with double my hp and shoot them down - if I play smartly.
I'm not trying to tell you that you're bad or something. I'm trying to tell you that the learning ceiling is extremely high and that you may enjoy getting up there if you stick with it.
P.S.: Please, don't do the same mistake that I did and switch your TV to low-latency mode ("game mode") if it has such a mode. It's *really* important that you do that. |

I must be the epitome of bad team finding cause each time I join caldari or amarr faction warfare, we have lost the match to an overwhelming defeat. I don't know what the current record is but I must have joined and lost by a landslide on 10 matches in a row!
As for the OP, I have similar bad days and worse days and even worse days where the only wps you would get is dropping LAV's on your team's snipers had CCP added LAV dropping wps. On the bright side.... it may possibly, at some point, hopefully in the distant yet near future, get slightly better for matchmaking matchups.
Do you aim assist or not? I personally have mine off... maybe that is what I am doing wrong. I have never really liked aim assisting on most FPS because I prefer to be accurate and go for headshots or weakpoints but many FPS games have aim assist magnetically move the cursor to make just body shots.
Edit: I like how accurate scrambler rifles are so I use those. Should I have aim assist on or not, I mostly try to stay back and go for headshots on people. |

Welcome to the world of EVE, Dust 514 side.
There are a few very simple ways to answer your question:
- It's not precisely you but your team is incompetent. - You're being faced against organized squads. - The other team is "better" than yours.
On that note you can also join a group of friends and try to organize a squad with very competent individuals (so to speak). That way you can see how they play and analyze slowly the tactics they use when facing a tough opponent.

It's called protostomping and it is a big problem with matchmaking. The new matchmaking system I'm pretty sur got removed and we're back to the original because the new one was causing incomplete teams and when you did get a full team it was more even.
Now it's back to the one sided premade team against solo noobs. |

Ok, I had a good laugh since I've been in your shoes and I can well understand how you feel.
It's a bit of a compounded problem IMO. You're still fairly new, your skills are undeveloped, and other players like to pub stomp in proto suits.
Generally, I find that when I die a bunch of times I'm playing a little too aggressively. If I were giving myself advice, I'd say play more sneaky, especially when facing heavies.
You see the rest of your squad moving to engage the heavy from the front? Hit his flank or back. He has to waste time turning around to shoot for one, and he's going to focus on what's in front of him. Also, if he's being attacked from multiple sides at the same time, he may not even realise that someone is attacking him from behind.
I favor scout suits, so I tend to play a more ambush style, although I can go toe to toe with others. I don't like to typically, and when I do it's more for the surprise factor. Most people expect a scout to run away, and not to run around a corner and then immediately come back out to stick a shotgun in their face.
Tactics to use depend on the weapon too IMO. The fake run away one works best with a shotgun, or remote explosives, REs making heavy's fly never gets old :)
Dust U has some very good players in it, take your time and have fun with the game, you'll learn alot from 'em.
As was suggested, practice aiming on poles. Try out different suits/weapons and find what works for you.
Also, to the fellow with the recruitment for BPO. I can understand wanting those items, but let's refrain from copying and pasting your other thread huh? This person is seeking advice, least you can do is write something new and then make your recruitment plug. |

To the OP,
Basically give up on direct assault - play out being a 'Janitor of war'. It's what I do - choose one of the objectives near your red line, place a droplink near it - if you can, place a remote explosive on that objective. Have an active scanner. Then just patrol it. Drive around in a LAV/car (and learn to hop out if you hear swarm launchers). Yes, it's not as sexy as being at the very front lines, but it does contribute towards winning and it does contribute towards you not getting killed and helps you learn enemy patterns by the merit of you living longer and thus observing them for longer. Mind out for enemy sniper douches (the LAV helps in this regard).
Just be a janitor for a early objective - it actually helps alot toward winning. |

Posted this a while back, Hope it helps :)
There was a new Merc who needed a few basic tips just to help him stay alive longer than 60 seconds here was my advice:
1. Try to run with a squad as this will increase the probability of them calling out enemies and Orbitals 2. If you do solo, scout it out and infiltrate or catch stragglers by surprise you could also snipe or hold down a position .DO not try running for objectives if your a one man team or you might just be a lead punching bag or an item on the Road Kill menu. 3. USE cover even if you think your Tactical Duvall is the end all to all opposers, chances are there is some one not in your sight gunning for you. 4. Its OK to run away. 5. Practice and use your sidearm. 6 Practice and use grenades 7. Watch for chokes points, this means that you don't run in the same corridors, hallways, areas where the last 7 or 8 blues just died because the enemy is choking you guys through the sam openings. 8. Have short term goals for example=10 kills with less than 6 deaths when you reach this, just back off and support, or hold down an area. 9.There is no such thing as Rambo..wait you might not get that reference..hmm ,you aren't going kill everyone the first 5 minutes of a game, let them come to you.
Just a few to help ya out RookiePirate

You will never become powerful enough to be careless in this game. If you see enemy uplinks, pop 'em. Focus on keeping your shots on target (upper center mass and headshots when possible) Try using active scanners to get the drop on opponents, and don't engage heavies inside their range. Ok, I have carefully read and analysed your post and can now offer some tailored advice.
This is New Eden. If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you are doing it wrong.
Run with a squad whenever possible. Work together. Focus fire when going for the kill. Focus fire is easy, just shoot the guy with the lowest health bar. 3 against 1 is much more effective than 1v1 especially when you are new.
The squad should only split up if they are coordinating multiple objectives. Sometimes it is tactically beneficial to break into fire teams of 2 or 3 to hit multiple targets in a coordinated manner. But if you don't have a reason to spit up, the squad should stay together. (What together means depends on your role.)
Use cover. Move from cover to cover. Usually a maximum of 2 people per cover, so your whole squad does not get taken out by a grenade. Never stand still in the open. Don't expect to kill someone who is at full health without having to duck back behind cover part way through. The exception is if they are standing still (hacking) and you line up a head shot.
Read my Frontline Guide for more details, but basically it come down to: Work as a Squad and use cover if you want to win games. |
