Is there a difference in CPU/PG usage? If so then the benefit would be being able to through better modules in with the weapon to boost performance/lethality. Also, what about reload speed? sometimes it really is just the little things.

Upgrading the sharpshooter skill is worth it regardless of what you run, it gives you the added 1-2 shots on target doing more damage before they can close in. Extended range shotgun is lethal if you know how to move.
