New to the game, and not that great at online FPS's... I play them single player, but I rather suck against people, as I've found with games like Black Ops. So, I'm wondering, what's a solid build that will be fairly easy that I should work towards long term? |

Easy peasy, get an Assault Rifle and Flaylock Pistol as your sidearm. For the suit go Caldari or Minmatar assault.

Any assault rifle? What should I put my SP into? If I decide to put points into assault rifle skills, and later I switch to a different type of assault rifle, will the skills I put points into still work for the other assault rifles? |

Yes the Assault Rifle skills work for all the AR variants. I recommend the basic full auto ones, for example the GEK is very powerful. Tactical is still decent but it's so hard to aim. Don't bother with the breach, burst variants.
Once you have the AR and the suit you should start working on getting the shield extenders for more HP. For the sidearm I go SMG or Flaylock. Flaylock is easier to use imo.

Here's an easy build. 1 any basic medium suit, they all handle a bit differently but the basics do much the same.
Shield extenders in the high slots, as many as possible as they will give you more shield hp.
At least one armour repairer in the low slot, possibly a basic plate too for the added hp.
One assault rifle of your choice. Even the regular one is decent for killing people. Scrambler pistol, smg or flaylock as a sidearm. Up to you which one you want to run with, they are all good at killing people.
IF you want you got three choices of grenades. Locus are regular frag grenades, good all rounders. Flux strips all the shields of any suit which can be great but circumstantial. Finally you got AV grenades, great for dealing with LAVs and helping to take out tanks.
Equipment wise there are only two good starting ones. Either the nanite injector for reviving downed team mates or the nanohive for replenishing your and your team mates ammo. It's up to you which one you run with. Hell, make one fitting with each then you can choose between them at a supply depot or when you spawn in. |

I tried your suggestions. I am horrible. How gear and skill point dependent is this game? Do I suck so bad because I have no skills yet and am using the lowest gear possible? Or is it me and I need more practice? |

Sorry this will be long but i believe helpful to you
Please ignore what the first couple of posters have told you they obviously do not have your best interest in mind as telling someone who is not good at fps to just pick the best suit and an assault rifle is not helpful. It is true a caldari with an assault rifle is deadly but you are not a killer in fps and luckily this game is built so that you don't have to be. What I am going to do is tell you options that I believe will be good for someone like you.
1st off you have a logi which is under medium dropsuits but you must unlock medium dropsuits of the same race level 3 before you can unlock logistics dropsuits. I have to say tho the Gallente logi isn't really that great between the Cakldari, Amaar and Minmatar they all have pros and cons that make them good not a one is the best, instead they all fit a role. A caldari logi has high shielding which is good against most things until u get hit by a flux grenade.
An Amaar gets to carry a sidearm and is generally well rounded period you can pretty much do what you want with it but it doesn't excel in any area, don't let balance be confused with weakness tho. Remember armor equals loss of speed choosing an Amaar u will most likely choose to put armor plates and it will slow u down unless u use ferroscale.
A Minmatar is the calssic logi and the only one to carry 4 equipment but is generally easier to kill than the other two except for the fact it is faster. For a true logistics guy tho this is definitely a good choice because of the equipment slots a good thing to do is make sure u stay behind guys and support them as a logi.
For a logi that can't carry a sidearm Mass Drivers are a good option just something logis have always used its hard to explain. Obviously you have other options but if u have trouble killing a shotgun isn't gonna do you much good, you could do swarm launchers though but choose the Amaar or an assault dropsuit so you can carry a sidearm. Plasma cannons are out there but completely impractical. And for equipment you're gonna want to carry a bunch of different things depending so i suggest multiple loadouts. Repair tool if you want to nanite injector maybe drop uplinks if you want to make sure ur people are in a certain spot. Personally i carry all nanohives so i have ammo for my mass driver and i drive my lav to repair people instead of carrying a rep tool but i have loadouts with rep and nanite.
Next you have the other support roles the Heavy and the Scout Sniper(not much to explain with snipers)
The Heavy is a force on the field problem is speed you are extremely slow good thing is you have a BFG at your disposal churning out 2000 rounds a minute, or a Forge gun which is essentially a plasma cannon that shoots straight with more power bigger clip size and the ability to decimate shield tanks and and dropship, lav or turret. Cons to this however are big you are instantly targeted you can't turn around so ull have problems with fast guys and ur heavy machine gun is weaker against shield. Forge gun however can destroy infantry but require accuracy up close another weapon where you need the high ground.
Lastly I want you to consider vehicles Lavs if you want to but thats more for fun. Tanks are good but Armor is weak against every anti vehicle weapon but the forge gun. Shield tanks mostly lose fights to Armor tanks and are weak against flux grenades and forge guns. Tanking is also expensive and will take a long time to be good at I suggest doing what i did and getting a dropsuit you're comfortable with being on the ground in before becoming a tanking. It takes more time but allows you to have something on the ground besides tanks all the time if you don't want to run militia gear.
Dropships are great for what they do however can be destroyed quickly if you don't leave when someone gets a good shot on you. Good for transportation or killing a regular dropship can carry pilot + 4 passengers + 2 gunners assaults carry 2 passengers + 2 gunners and a logi i believe is same configuration as regular. For dropships i can't tell you how to be a pilot its a learning process hovering R2 + L2 is key if you want you're gunners to get kills.
That said i know theres a lot I've not included but you know that would take forever. I'm not calling out any play style anything that works for people is good i said gallente aren't that good but there are a some pretty good players that use them they just make sure to kill you first. Feel free to message me I love helping people in this game because a lot of people get pissed off and quit due to the hard work you have to put into this game. Also to anyone that thinks I made a mistake feel free to correct me its better that new players have the correct info. |

Thank you. I appreciate the advice on trying a more specialized role because if it comes down to me being able to just out-gun someone, I'm going to fail... so maybe run and gun type build is not for me. I find that if I get the drop on someone, I can often kill them, but otherwise, I die. Any ideas for a build that would allow me to get the drop on people more often? Something fast moving and hard to spot, perhaps. Is there cloaking or stealth or something in this game? |

If you feel gun game is not for you then you can always play support or become a tanker. Tanks at the moment are weak so I won't skill into them if I were you. Stealth in this game is terrible as the scout is the weakest suit in game. So that leaves you with the logistics role.
As the wall of text said you have to grind a bit to unlock the logistics dropsuit. As earlier I recommend the Caldari or the Minmatar so that you equip shield extenders. The Caldari can survive a lot at any level while the Minmatar is the fastest logi suit. Since all logibros except one can't use a sidearm the AR is still a good choice for a logibro weapon. Then you should be getting nanite injectors, repair tools and nanohives. These are basics to any logistics role.

A shotgun will allow u to get the drop on people but if you do flux and mass driver if u sneak up on someone with a flux u will usually win no matter what weapon you use since armor is so weak. Also a mass driver is a six barreled grenade launcher my motto if i can't outgun you I'm sure as hell gonna blow u up but i also **** people off lol. No matter what you do you want to unlock electronics skill so that you can unlock PROFILE DAMPENING makes it harder for people to spot you I can't tell you how to win but mainly stay with a group so you don't have to worry about getting the jump on people. If you become a logi find a nice fat heavy and keep him in front of you they can absorb a lot of rounds but remember you are a medic which also makes you a target smart people WILL try to kill you first but smart squad mates know their squads weaknesses. Its hard to find too many people that wanna deal with having a "noob" run with them but i don't mind when newer people follow our lead, I had to do it hell sometimes i still do plenty of people who are better than me. When it comes to getting the drop on people PICK YOUR BATTLES a black suit is something you want to avoid for the moment i would say and big fat heavys until you learn how to kill them.
I might forget to respond to this again so like I said feel free to send me mail in game or join this channel (Red Star Associates.) with the period at the end. In there you'll find my corp along with people from my alliance that are willing to help you |

What all of them said.
I will say though, don't get discouraged, and don't worry about your KDR, especially if you are new to FPS. If you are new to FPS (I am), it takes a while for your muscle memory to kick in so your thumbs know to aim without you having to consciously think about it. Don't give up. The below is meant as encouragement and basic tips, not as a scary wall of text, so I hope some of it helps.
- Start playing little mini games with yourself using incremental goals... stick to your cheap militia gear and make your primary goal: "Don't Die this game".
Do not try to kill anyone. Instead focus on being aware of your surroundings, learning where things are on the map, learning where sniper positions are and where you can find cover from them, learning where people spawn in and how to read your radar and stay with or behind your friendly lines and recognize when those lines are collapsing and you need to GTFO. Learn to strafe and serpentine from cover to cover to avoid sniper fire. Learn to never stop moving. Learn when that doesn't apply and you need to crouch very still perfectly behind the smallest bit of cover for a second to regen shields because you know the enemy cannot hit you until they reposition. Learn to always be looking left and right and behind you, learn to turn in a circle while still moving in the direction you want to move in (turn left, sidestep right, check your six while running in reverse, turn left sidestep left, turn back to front...). Always stay near cover, avoid charging forward, and know when to retreat. Know how long your shield recharge delay is, know how long it takes your armor to repair, and know where you can go so that you have time for that to happen instead of wandering aimlessly or faceplanting into an HMG heavy.
- Only after you have a solid sense of "huh, I can do this!" when it comes to SURVIVING, should you start thinking about understanding your enemy and the combat of the game. Notice I didn't even say "KILLING" yet.
You need to study and learn what different suit types and levels look like, and you can partially do this by looking at teammates and squading up with people to ask questions. You need to also visually recognize different weapons - you want to be able to identify with a glance that the guy crouching in the distance with a long black weapon is a sniper. You want to be able to know what a mass driver looks like in a proto minmatar assault's hands so that you know to have cover handy. You need to know that yellow means a logi and that he doesn't have a sidearm and if he is reloading you have an opening to attack. You need to know what a shotgun scout standing next to you means. You need to know that the guy holding his hand up with a grenade in it is "cooking" it so get behind cover and be prepared to dodge his throw. Get a good headset so you can hear the game in stereo and learn to use sound as a cue to what is happening around you. That "whish" was a sniper that just missed you.. keep moving! That rumbling to your left is a tank behind a pillar... keep the pillar between you! That revving is an LAV behind you... MOVE!
- Now you need to understand how all of this affects your team, and how you can help them win.
Learn that being part of a good squad who is trying to do the same thing is the surest way to survive. Learn how to understand and possibly set squad objectives. Learn to stay near your squadmates and cover their flanks. Learn to focus fire on enemies to kill them before they can kill you. Learn how you can support your team mates. You need to gain a fundamental understanding of flanking, when to do it, when to press a flank, when to draw the enemy toward you on their flank so your teammates can press the center. You need to understand numerical advantage and the importance of holding key terrain and the heights. You need to understand positioning of yourself, and your teammates, and understand what the enemy is trying to accomplish and how. You need to understand equipment, when and where to place drop uplinks, when and where to drop nanohives, when to spawn in with AV grenades or flux grenades or remote explosives. Know when to bring in swarms, or an LAV, and understand the change in team dynamics and capabilities when several on one side are in vehicles or in AV.
You need to learn the range of your weapon, and learn when NOT to shoot and give your position away. You need to start learning which suits are more likely to have high armor, high shield, or high speed, and which weapons are more effective against different types of 'tank' type. You need to try every militia suit and weapon so you understand basic things like roughly how many rounds a scrambler pistol or a shotgun has compared to an SMG or an Assault Rifle. You need to know these things because your enemy will use them against you. That way you can focus on dodging the shotgunner, count his rounds, and know when he's about to have to reload so you can prepare to kill him.
... And only after all of that should you really be worried about "Killing". Don't get me wrong, through this process you should be testing weapons and firing on red dots in front of you, but focus on learning the above before you focus on charging forward to kill things (which you should rarely, rarely do).
Start by firing on people that the guys next to you are firing on. Look for enemies with low health bars. Look for snipers running in the open on their way to their purches. Look for heavies that are reloading. Look for guys standing still so you can go for headshots. Look for the easy ones, and take on the hard engagements only when you have to.
Then one day if CCP unfucks the game's aiming mechanics, you might actually kill something.
Or you become a tanker, at which point, I have nothing to offer. |

Also, yeah, to answer your actual question: Test out all the militia and see what you like. Are you into being a glass canon (Shotgun Scout) or a standard infantry type (Caldari Assault) or a support player (Gallente/Minmatar logi) or do you want to be a slow-moving ball of death (Amarr heavy with HMG or forge gun)?
"Go AR Cal Assault" is kind of the fallback plan for everyone because it's decent in most situations and your kind of middle ground average and is still good in the end-game. Scouts are masochists and heavies are slow and die a lot unfortunately. Logistics should focus on support which is great if that's what you want to do, and assault, again, is your standard infantry type. People are also saying Cal Logi because it is shield-heavy and shield has an advantage over armor right now.
For now, stick to your starter fits until you know WTF you want to do. |
