I feel that not throwing every skill point into a single weapon, suit, and core skills actually allows the player to be far more versatile on the field.
I have 4 proto type weapons, LAV's, Tanks, and proto, basic frame suit. The only thing im missing from what i use to have in chrome are drop ships.
This sort of skill point spread allows me to compete in cqc areas, allows me to actually fight off tanks, and either counter shield tankers, or take on a more balanced, standard roll with the trusty assault rifle.
If neither of those play syles are needed, I can bring down a tank to tip the gun play balance. I honestly think that the only purpose tanks have right now is to distract the enemy team, and force them to switch to something that leaves them vulnerable to infantry.
Or I can bring down an LLAV and do... stuff...
Some people think that dumping all of your skill points into a single suit, weapon, and core skills is the best way to go. Why is that? Sure, you'll have amazing efficiency with that combo, but you'll leave yourself open to everything else.
What are all of your views? Do you think its better to specialize in one thing to transform into a specialized super tool. or cover many rolls, and become a swiss army knife? |

I got myself into a GEK AR to have a reliable weapon for possible corp battles where a Freedom Mass Driver might not always be the best choice. Also have advanced Swarms for killing LAVs.
+ advanced injector, nanohive, uplink
And a Proto Minnie logi for speed and its good slot layout.
So IMO spec into one thing but have other options as well.

Jack of all trades, master of none. Thats all fine and dandy for pub matches. BUT for competitive gameplay if you go toe to toe with som1 fully specialized into there role your a dead man. SIDE NOTE after im fully specialized into my class and role (I'm only 6mill SP away now) I will have all the core skills to cross train into any other role on the field I want to, whether that be a logi/AV/Scout ect.
My advice: Fully specialize THEN specc into other things |

Skilling into multiple roles will allow you to adapt to different combat situations. Regardless of whether it an all out infantry war or tank battle different skills will prove very useful in the long run.

Here's the thing. Just skill up enough to get into what you really want. Just enough to be effective and so you have ol' reliable to fall back on. Then the bare minimum for other things you want to do.
I had gone full Logistics before the respec and gotten bored with the grind and stopped playing. The respec came and instead focused on core skills. Originally I was going to finish my core skills first (because Skinweave Minmatar Dropsuit is OP like that). ALL OF THEM. I got into levels 4 of the PG/CPU skills and had 500,000 SP left over and said "**** it" and put enough to get the basics of most guns.
It was the best decision I ever made in regards to Dust. Whenever I get bored of something, I have SO much variety to choose from that I always have a reason to play. Got bored of being a logi? I got my Remote Explosive Madness. Got fed up with that? AR. I've got heavy loadouts for defending points and blowing up vehicles. I've got Scramblers, Plasma Cannons, and shotguns. I GOT IT ALL, BABY AND I GOT ALL THE MOTIVATION TO USE 'EM!

This is an effective method of play, the only thing you could do to make it better, is to have a squad of good players to cover your weaknesses. I play a Jake-of-Trades build, which works for me, as I don't enjoy the idea of sticking to one strategy, I prefer to act as needed, at times it means I have to lonewolf it or on other occasions become the team medic.
Only problem is, I'm not as well equipped as my enemies half the time, which can make things a bit more difficult than it should be, sometimes I think about going back to my sniper build from Chromesome, but I start to remember the times I have finished the enemy team with just a few battlefield adjustments.
But to answer your question, I think it's better to have a specialize role if your in a good team with good coordination, a J-T build can work that way to, but it's not as easy, a JoT is more like a spare tire, you never know when you might need one.
But I still miss my Charge Rifle. |

When SP is limited (< 10m), prioritizing a single role is probably the best choice. This game is too much of a SP sink right now to spread out roles without a boatload of lifetime SP. But once you pretty much max out one role, spreading to others is probably a good idea, plus it keeps the game from getting boring if you have multiple roles to play with.
But remember, a jack of all trades is a master of nothing... Unless you have the SP |

Don't'cha know? You're not suppose to spend SP, only hoard it. Something else will come out you wanna try or the weapon/suit your using might get nerfed. Much better to save it, suffer for it, and smile.
In all seriousness, it's better to specialize through max/min-ing, and then branch out. By this I mean consider what you need to get to what you're looking for, plot out your SP to get it and don't deviate, so you can reach your goal as quickly as possible. Also consider spending a little cash for the ability to try items at base level without having to spec into them. |

Cores pretty much maxxed. I'm well into AR, Shotgun, Snipes, Flays, and Swarms. I can always change it up and keep the game from getting stagnant. More importantly (to me), I can kill whatever killed me last. If I gave a **** about competing in PC, I may have focused my weapon skills a little more.

my advice being, spec into what you think you will have the most fun in, and pour your points into it, then when your happy with your suit/weapon performance, find some other weapons, equipment, or something that isnt to skill intensive to sidegrade into, and meshes well with your style of play |

Also there are so many more overlapping skills over core skills which can be used in almost every role, be they uplinks, nanohives etc.
But for lower SP characters, build your go-to-fit (and those core skills) before branching out by skilling into different dropsuits and whatnot. |

In chrome I went too wide an couldn't wait for respec, come up rising I still went to wide even tho I narrowed in an I quickly sent in my request for respec an thank god I got it. At the time I had 8 mill, now I have 15.
At this time I can afford to spread out but I learned to keep it tight. I specialized in scout, everything I need for it is complex, I have 4 weapons at proficiency 3. Now I'm goin all the way with one.
All my extra skills are at advanced. Basically instead of skilling too wide I go advanced on the good cheap skills an get everything I want to there since I have the importants stuff all the way up, this way you can do something like get drop links to advance right away instead of Savin for say a guns pro 4 . Same cost but now your of more team value than wasting sp on three % since the guns good anyway then once it's all advanced an proto you can slowly bring it all up since every skill now costs at least 400000 then you specialize again. Seems to work good this way for me |

specialize... Iw wouldn't try and make one toon a vehicle and infantry player (not until I have 30-40 million SP) mainly due to them not sharing any of the core skills.
If your an assault or heavy you might be able to get away with it at 20 mil, however as a logi i'm at 20 mil SP and havn't finished all of my equipment stuff yet.

if you want to perform well in PC.. you need to do specialize into something.
Its probably a big reason why so many corps can't hold their own. Unwise use of SP for many players thinking they can win in PC without proto gear and mostly maxed out supporting passives.
Once your specialization gets nerfed though and can no longer do what you want it to... well its probably best to just move on and find a new game. Thankfully PS4 is coming out soon! |
