I didn't enjoy Dust when I first played. I stuck with it.... well because it's free. Lately I've begun to actually enjoy it. Even with all the bugs, and the "failure" that people say Uprising was, I feel like it's still a lot of fun. Even if I had everything I wanted specc'd into, I'd still play, because it's a game, that's supposed to be fun.
I don't play for SP, I don't play for ISK and I certainly don't care about "being better than X Corp". The pissing contest can take place in the bathroom, I'm in the game room having fun.
That said, the fact that people are clamouring for new content is a good sign that the core game is better than it was. |

That said, the fact that people are clamouring for new content is a good sign that the core game is better than it was. that's the thinking of a casual player, while I won't judge you and call you a scrub for it, you shouldn't say competitive gamers are involved in a "pissing contest". Humans are competitive in everything, it's a natural thing, almost a survival instinct. The biggest / most popular corps in this game are competitive corps. Without them, the game would lose at least half the active player base. These competitive gamers are the ones spending the most money on this game in order to keep up with the SP race. What do casual players do? Play a couple pubs a week, might spend a couple dollars here and there. What gives this game its longevity is suppose to be PC (Planetary Conquest). Without that, this game is nothing more than a mediocre lobby shooter with no meaning. So I don't know why you look down on competitive gamers.
I get that people put a lot of effort to be competitive in this game. I play to win, not protect my KDR. But your purpose in playing, outlined in your OP is to earn more SP to get better gear, or to be ranked better than another corp. Without any more things to spec into, you say there's no reason to play. I think that's sad. A player can still play competitively, without playing the game for the purpose of unlocking the next shiny toy - that's a pipe dream no matter what game you play.
My reference to the pissing contest is to point out that there is such a thing as measuring the wrong thing to determine how well you're doing. I don't look down on competitive players, I myself play competitively, to win battles. I guess in the end I would just encourage you to examine your expectations, and what a game can offer in the big picture.
That aside, I agree that Dust 514 lacks any memorable element to award players for accomplishments in the game. Given the nature of the MMO side of it, payers want to see their appearance change, have things in their quarters, or have some purpose beyond business as usual to own PC districts. If Mordu's challenge resulted in physical things in my quarters, to look at, then the rewards would have been far better to the player base than a pile of unusable equipment. Dust doesn't even have PS Trophies. |
