tl;dr; I probably suck as a FPS games when not using a mouse. I'd love any advice you could give to help improve my game.
I've been playing Dust 514 steadily on this character for a couple months now. While I have improved, my skills as a player are in great need of improvement. When I play my total kills per match range from 3-7, tending to be more toward the 3-5 area. My K/D ratio per match typically falls in the range of .50 - 1.0. A good match for me puts my K/D ratio at 1. My war points per match typically falls in the 300-500 range.
I've played FPS games in the past. They have all been on the PC though, and I've always played with a mouse and not a controller. I played the Battle Field games starting with BF 1942. My K/D ratio per match on those games would fall between 1.0 - 5.0, and almost always 2.0 or above.
So I'm coming here in search of advice//tips to either increase my K/D ratio, my total kills per match or at the very least my total WP per match. I'll be honest and say that I'd actually just be happy with just getting a higher amount of WP. Even if that means not working to get kills but be more of a support role.
This is the drop suit fitting I use about 90% of the time.
GEK-38 Assault Rifle C/1-Series Stable Drop Uplink 3 x Enhanced Shield Extender +33 shield 2 x Enhanced Armor Plates +87 armor Basic AV or Basic Locus grenade
Assault Rifle Operation - 5 Assault Rifle Proficiency - 3 Assault Rifle Sharpshooter - 3
A very frustrating issue for me is that I tend to die very quickly when I come face to face with other players. I avoid head to head fights with heavies. I also try to stay close to other players and not run off by myself.
I'd love any advice/tips anyone is willing to give me. I admit that I may just not be a very FPS player with a controller, but anything you can offer that you think might improve my game will be gladly welcomed.

Your KDR is similar to mine, however I tend to average double the WP per game. So, take my advice with a grain of salt. The thing that stands out to me in your fit is your drop uplinks.... with your focus on the AR, and your plates slowing you down you probably put the uplinks wherever you and your squad are, correct? So that if you die in the hotzone you can get back to your team?
I tend to get way more WP from my uplinks when I roam behind the redline and drop an uplink where my team doesn't have access, so we can 'pour in' and take a lightly guarded objective, or something we otherwise could not reach because enemy resistance is in the way.
WP wise you may have better luck with a good nanohive to replenish your team's ammo, or armor (or both) but you'll need advanced L3 skills and above to make this effective. Or, even running a nanite injector could provide more WP if you are in the hot-zone.
Flux grenades are great for removing the shields of a bunch of enemies and then you and the team can wear them down quicker.
hacking is another good way to get WP. I always run a scout suit at the beginning for the initial rush to objectives so I can get a few hacks and drop an uplink somewhere in the center of the map, at a strategic place. Then you could switch to your assault fit after your first death and link up with your team. Typically you can get 2-300 WP out of the way in the first 5 minutes of the game right there.
You may also want to consider a logi, as if you armor and shield tank there are less drawbacks to being so slow with those plates for the logi support character, and it's easier to stay behind your team and get kills with the AR (esp. if you get good with the TAC AR.)
Anyway, my $.02 |

You may want to think about swapping one of those plates for a repair mod; while it won't help you win the first fight, it might save you in the second. Certainly it gives you more options. |

As one of the posters mentioned drop up links are only going to boost your war points if they are prime for flanking the enemy, in which case you are running solo, which I don't recommend. When I go hunting I actively look for those who stray from the mob.
For a replacement item I would recommend hive or injector, they also tax your cpu/pg less.
Also keeping a smg as a sidearm wouldn't hurt during your reloading sessions, also pending on your choice of rifle it can compliment any range deficiencies.
Movement and positioning is simple yet complex at the same time, sometimes its just better to retreat, I know I had a few problems with this despite knowing this (saying the words is one thing, implementing it is another), I do recommend looking at this aspect of your gameplay thoroughly just in case the issue lies here.
Beyond that I just recommend staying in a group and follow behind the vanguard until a trench develops, after that its just working on your fps skills |

Ditch the armor plates... you are Caldari, shields are your best friend. Go 3x complex shields instead.
I have found movement speed (and sprint speed) is extremely important in terms of survival. That extra armor does you no good if you are slow, because it makes you an easier target to shoot/run over/grenade/etc. Being faster and more agile with less overall HP is infinitely better IMO. I have been able to get out of so many sticky situations running complex catalyzers vs not having any speed mods. A flux nade will be the bane of your existence, but at least you can run away at a decent speed.
I assume your C/1 is an assault (rather than the logi C/1), which means you already have good enough armor at default. If you really feel the need to use armor, use ferroscale plates - no movement speed penalty.
My suggestions:
- Get complex shield extenders ASAP - Try to get at least advanced catalyzers and put one on your suit.
If you have enough CPU/PG, slap a ferro plate on the last slot for a slight boost in armor with no speed penalty. Or use that last slot of PG/CPU boost to run better weapons.
Also as an assault, your best bet is to run nanohives most of the time.

Have you tried using a Keyboard/Mouse in Dust? I found it to make strafing and tracking enemies to be much easier. It's not that great for a sniper, however.
I started dying less the more I became aware of my environment and I purposefully keep structures that I can duck around/behind near me so I can slip away for a moment and allow my shields/armor to recharge, reload and so on.
I'd consider myself a fairly poor player in terms of gun play but I can manage to keep my K/D (recently at least) above 1.0 because I'm using the environment to my advantage and I know when to retreat. I also keep multiple suits available so I can switch between them as the situation demands. My SP might be more spread out but I can quickly adapt to a changing battlefield. As for WP, I frequently fall into the top 5 and often into number 1/2 - being a Logi helps with that but I probably do as much offensively as I do supporting my team. |

I highly recommend the complex shield extender. By using those instead of the enhanced variants, you're looking at upwards of 100 more shield points. I also suggest dropping an enhanced plate for an armour repairer if you're going to use some armour tanking on that suit - it's important to be able to regenerate that armour a little bit. I don't think armour tanking on that suit is a good plan though - I suggest putting on a single reactive plate if you really want to do it, because that'll give you a little HP as well as some regeneration for only a single slot. In the other slot try to fit a kinetic catalyzer or cardiac regulator.
An important tactic in this game is not to charge in. You'll do much much better if you flank around and try to keep at range a little bit. If the enemy doesn't know you're there, you can line up your sights on the head and drop them in a few shots. Over time, your aiming with the controller will improve, and you might be able to do that in 1 on 1 fights. When coming into close quarters, strafe like mad, keep moving left or right, as this will make it much harder to hit you. You can also jump around a little bit.
Essentially - Complex shield extenders are your friend - Consider redoing your low slots - Think about your tactics a lot |

To fit 3x Complex shield extenders you need 1) proto level skills in extenders and 2) most likely proto drop suit for the fitting requirements unless he's maxxed out every other core skill (which is just as bad).
I'd suggest that advising him to "go proto" is going to be of limited use to him as he stands. |

Agreed. Keep enhanced extenders and replace the plates instead with Shield Regulators. Take shield damage a couple of times then retreat, and watch how fast your shields begin to replenish from the first instance you take damage. Remember that length of time; that's how long you have from the first bullet that hits you until your shields begin replenishing.
Shield regulators shorten that amount of time, and given the base shield recharge rate, it beats having a little bit of extra armour and massive movement penalty, with the small cost of having to get behind cover every now and then, which is what you should be doing anyway.
As for your weapon, the GEK is a great weapon. What you want to try do is catch enemies with their pants (or shields) down, and if they aren't get them down. When your shields are depleted it takes longer to replenish than when they're up. So if you take out someone's shields, and they partially take down yours, get to cover, then return to fire as soon as your own shields are replenishing. Theirs should still be down. |

Up to Uprising I used nothing but advanced assault suits (never made it to proto assault cause it was extremely expensive), fitting complex shield extenders on an advanced assault is entirely possible and definitely a wise choice. Heck, I was able to run all complex shields, basic armor repair, standard locus, standard nanohive (when std was all you really needed) and a Duvolle/Balacs on my adv suit pre-uprising. I stretched that suit like no other, so I know it can be done.
Either that or he jumps into his proto suit, cause most (like I did until uprising) won't want to shell out the SP to go proto... therefore never will get it. Working top down is almost the best choice in this game when it comes to the suits. Get proto first, then worry about core skills. |

Ok first off forget the drop suit advice thats not whats important, you figured out the problem yourself right away which is not being used to using a controller over the KBM and the only way to get proficient with it is practice practice practice Dust has weird sensitivity controls as is so fine aiming no matter what you adjust your in game settings to is not going to come naturally right away
Start with your settings at 50/50 and adjust from there to find something that feels close to right and build off that, once you get used to the controls everything else will start to fall into place |

I would highly recommend using a keyboard and mouse if that is your thing first to see if there is any drastic improvement to your enjoyment of the game. |

Wow, that is a lot of great advice. It gave me a lot to think about and a lot of ways I might be able to change how I play.
I have a question. Do any of you use a keyboard and mouse? I was wondering if the PS3 supports wireless keyboards and mice. It would be very difficult for me to use a wired keyboard and mouse unless I wanted to sit on the floor 5 feet away from a 50" television.
One other thing. For those of you in corporations, do your corporations tend to value K/D ratios more or WP per game more?
Thank you everyone, I appreciate all of the advice. |

I typically used wired things, may sound archaic to some people but abhor running out of batteries mid fight. |
