Today, I decided to use my 50 free burnstalks (AUR version of standard LR), and they were actually pretty good for standard weapons.
My fitting was as such: Amarr heavy frame A-1 'Burnstalk' Laser rifle GN-13 flaylock (very lightly used, before you say that's all it took) Sleek locus grenades Basic light damage modifier Basic armor plates Militia armor repair unit
I found that the trick with this is to stay in 2 "key" locations-
- Where your team is so you aren't singled out
- A good distance away from the fighting- not sure what the optimal range is, but when it's there, you'll know it from how quickly you melt enemies.
With a little practice, it's also easy to avoid overheating, while keeping the heat high enough for optimal DPS. Ofc, lasers are terrible at short range, so it's good to carry a sidearm. I'll soon see how the combination of the laser and an advanced SMG works. Last but not least, remember to stay at the distance. Break the habit of charging in with your team, and instead stay in the shadow of the blob.
Not sure how it was earlier after the nerf, but I'm finding it to be pretty good right now. |

I'm starting to think that each race will have a kind of 'stand off' weapon. It is weakest at short ranges but superior as a support weapon at mid to long ranges. This fits the md and laser rifle. To an extent, the sniper rifle fits it also. |

Pretty sure the LR has been viable this entire time. But since nobody uses it, nobody gets killed by it, therefore it gets ignored. Some people used it at the beginning of uprising and realized it was not like the LR in Chromo, and spread the word that the LR was useless, therefore very few ever touched it because we all believed it sucked.
I have been killed by a LR a total of 2 times since uprising, and each time I got melted instantly. First time was with the std variant, second time was with the ELM. LR still packs a real big punch, you just have to utilize the optimal range more than you had to in Chromo. |

So. Recently they fixed the aiming so there was glare and you could actually see what you were shooting. This being said, the LR is still quite underpowered. Yes, there are times when you can melt opponents quickly but you have to be in a great spot and the enemy has to be kinda just sitting around. The other issue is the damage doesn't scale up with advanced and proto lasers. The only real way to effectively use this weapon is by fully speccing into it and throwing on damage mods (the ammar assault helps as well). When you compare all the requirements of this to other weapons, it's just not worth it... Yet. Proof? Try making an alternative and quickly going to the laser in the academy noob matches... |

I'll consistently go ~15/2 with my Viziam suit. Ever since they dimmed the laser glare and increased range, the laser has become usable. |

The biggest problem with the LR is the sights. Return them to what they were (you can leave the zoom alone), and it'd be a decent weapon. |

I think the important lesson here is that there are more factors that contribute to a weapons effectiveness other than your most basic raw quantifiable data (damage, range, rof). Hopefully this will open up a box of creative ways to balance weapons without making breaking the weapon itself or others. |

Removing the glare helped, aiming it is not that bad. The optimum range is a whopping 20m (65-85) inside that range when heated the dmg is ok. Outside of that range tag the enemy, hope somebody else kills him for the +25. You have to use dropships to get to those 1-2 spots on the map you can be effective.
Being in that sweet spot where the dmg is ok, is very hard. I would like to see its range be 30m-85m. Atleast then you could use it on the ground for something more than grabbing +25's

True.
Aiming:
-The iron sights are obstructive. -The 'zoom' reduces your peripheral vision. -The only way i can tell if I am on target is if the UI shows up with their suit type and shield/armour and I see their shields go down. -I can only tell if i am hitting if their health is going down. -Theres one particular surface texture and mood lighting which makes the ground really shiney. Shooting from an elevated position down on it I can't see targets. -Hip fire is unusable due to the ranges it needs to operate at.
Aiming isn't the only problem to using the laser effectively. As the only dedicated laser user in my corp, I get asked if the laser is worth using. It is, but with very heavy caveats:
- You need to dedicate your play style to use it effectively. This includes positioning yourself in effective areas with wide and long fields of view. - You need to learn what range is with no visual clue other than the UI showing dropsuit stats when on target. You need to know 66-74 or 85, the optimal and effective ranges (at least of the standard laser in the ranges thread.) Its something you need to get an innate sense of. I've had to learn the new ranges and have gone from 79 longest kill to 84. - You need to be able to put the laser on target and be able to keep it on target as they move. With the obstruction I have noted above with the beam and iron site, this is not straightforward. - To operate the laser effectively you need to switch to a sidearm and be comfortable using it. Switch if within 40m or someone gets the jump on you. My preference is the SMG. - You need to have a sense of timing with the ammo as you keep your continuous fire. You don't have time to watch the ammo count and keep the laser on target. With the reduced damage compared to Chromosome you need to get the laser heated to the point of overheat, without going over. With Viziam Laser 33 is the overheat point on all suits, the Amarr Assault Proto is 11. 33 is not enough to kill heavily tanked suits or most proto. I cant give the figures for other lasers or Amarr suits as I dont use them. Learn how long you can keep this fire going and stop before 11. I've got the knack of stopping at 12 or 13. Getting to 12 allows you to 'swipe' 2 people as long as they are both close. - I've yet to suicide outside the initial Uprising learning curve but the overheat causes problems outside just damage to yourself and inability to run or switch to sidearm. Even when you have weapons free you still need to reload. There's a glitch where quite often you try to reload and your unable so you need to switch to sidearm and then back. The time from overheat to having a fully reloaded weapon can make the difference between having area control and having enemies close or get multiple fire points on you.
Even with all of the above, the laser is my favourite weapon. I can only recommend it if people go Viziam and Proto Amarr Assault and dedicate their play style to it. |

I have been killed a few times by the LR...it is but a shell of its former glory indeed. When skilling into a wepon people tend to go for the most bang for their sp and the LR is pretty much at the bottom of the list.
Anybody can become decent with any wepon..... it is just those that are willing to overcome the learning curve " death" that comes with it. |

If I wasn't saving my SP for other things I would probably run with a Carthum Scrambler rifle over my Duvalle. Reasons, Higher Damage per bullet, and more bullets per clip. Also it has a larger optimal range than the AR. |
