Hello there.
After seeing some feedback about strafing being faster than walking, going backward being faster then strafing and other weird stuff, i decided to do some testing. Been doing 10s movement going forward, backward, and strafing with different suits. And here are the results.
Parameters : 10s movement in one direction.
Heavy suit : (skinweave. base speed : 3.65)
Gåæ : 38/37/39m Gåô : 37/38/38m Gåö : 38/38/38m
Assaut : (Minmatar. base speed : 5.3)
Gåæ : 56/55/55m Gåô : 57/55/55m Gåö : 55/57/55m
Scout : (Dragonfly. base speed : 5.45)
Gåæ : 57/57/56m Gåô : 57/57m Gåö : 56/57/57m
So, we should have expected values respectively of 36.5m, 53m and 54.5m. But there is a small margin for error between the moment i started the countdown and me pushing the stick on the PS3. Overall, the result are import to show one thing. Movement speed is the same no matter if you go straight, back or strafing.
The visual impression strafing being faster than moving forward only comes from field of view imo. You FOV in front of you is bigger compared to what you see on the side. Thus strafing giving that speedy impression.
Now, as for why strafing seems overall faster. After testing if the dual input was still working (using both KBM and DS3 to straf), i realized it's been fixed. And i tend to think the former dual straf speed is now default for any controller type. So yeah CCP didnt change anything, they may just have fixed something and it actually impacted the whole movement pattern.
Whatever it is though, i like it !

I knew they were crazy, I attributed the perception of increased movement speed to be a result of the smoother frame rate.
I tested it a bit differently myself, strafing, walking and backpedaling from side to side in the MCC. That way my constant was the distance and time to travel being the variable. |

So we got the "strobe light " effect. Jittery frame rate made it feel slower |

But if this is the case that would mean CCP was right they didnt' change the strafe speed at all but instead fixed the problem that prevented getting to max strafe speed instead. |

They may not have changed strafe numbers but fixing the dual strafe speed made current strafe twice as fast as pre 1.2 . The question is whether or not it was intentional. |

So why the hell they don't use the same aiming mechanics as in Chromosome ? remove the acceleration restrictions again.
And by the way... i think the problem is Strafe "Acceleration", and not so much the speed. |

Aiming is being worked on. Chromosome's data were maybe better but not top grade. So they keep iterating on it. As i said before in other threads, we may see some changes during the summer. |

Isn't it more typical to be have backpedal and/or strafe speed be slower than standard forward speed? |

Depends on the shooter. Afaik MAG didnt have difference between straf and moving forward. Backpedaling maybe was slower though. |

Just a little addon. I tested a left and forward (diagonal) sprint and it had the exact same speed as forward sprint. |

How you people enjoy hover boards over realistic movement will never make sense to me :/
On the bright side, it's waaaay less work for CCP, so that must be a plus.
It's always nice moving backwards in gaming development, instead of forwards. |
