I think you are misunderstanding the difference between "class" and "drop suit variant"
A class is an archetype that fulfills a certain role on the battlefield, and who's range of abilities is strictly limited to fulfill that archetype. Using World of Warcraft as an example (because most people have probably played that) a Warrior is a class, it wears plate and it can either tank or be melee DPS. Their roles are defined by the mechanics tied intrinsically to their class.
A Dropsuit Variant is an empty frame upon which modules can be placed. The basic variants do not even have role bonuses, and even with the specialized bonuses they are not locked into a very narrow subtype. In this sense the role that they play on the battlefield is much more dependent on gear. A heavy by itself doesn't necessarily indicate any specific class as a heavy drop suit can be outfitted to snipe, or to be a LAV gunner (or driver), to be AV, or to hold a point with an HMG. All of these are not subsets of some underlying archetype (aside from "person who can kill things" ) and their role on the battlefield varies wildly.
Likewise, there is a similar possible scope for distinction within the roles of the medium and light dropsuits, which are not dependent on the variant of dropsuit equiped, but instead on the manner of gun(s) / modules equipped. If you are looking at defining a set of "classes" on the game then do not look at the dropsuit variants but instead the weapons / vehicles.
The proper "classes" would be more along the lines of "Sniper", "Tank Driver", "Gunner", "AV", "CQC", "suppression", candlestick maker, and "Assault" (not locked to just the assault dropsuit), etc etc. |
