Fits in well with the LR, actually. When the Viziam prototype blows up in your face it blows up hard.

Prototype gear should have "some" problems, that is why it is in the "testing" stages.

Also, prototype sounds "cooler" than advanced so it has some appeal. But it is a problem in the game... if you close the gap between Advanced and Prototype, that will help to balance the game. You still get the "good" looks of the Proto gear, but without the overkill.

We're used to prototype being before the fully functional model. In dust you have the basic gear, it's advanced version, and then the prototypes for the newest best stuff on the field. It's more of a testbed of the emerging technologies than a prototype for the stuff that's already around.

Prototype doesnt always mean the product is crappy, maybe its just incomplete and needs further testing to be approved for general use. As for rare weapons, I imagine they're customized prototypes further tuned for the mercenaries making them more of a completed prototype model.
