The first is what I was expecting - no more darting between tiny pieces of cover to avoid a hail of proto AR death I guess :(
The second bit though...did I miss something in the patch notes or is it something attributed to the other changes they made?
I'm getting impatient - the train home is taking far too long to arrive... |

I feel like I've transported myself to a parallel dimension. Everything is the same except I'm not the only scout using an AR!
I hope the actual Gallente blaster, when released, will be fun to use still. |

I like it ... only bad thing is that the laser beam instantly gives away your position, so if anyone is around to see you melting your poor victim, you've drawn a line right to yourself. Gotta choose your targets wisely ... oh, and watch that feedback! Yep, I've definitely got a scout suit with a Lazer rifle (just the basic STD rifle). It's a fun fit, but as Ruthless Lee mentions it's all about "here I am, come get me". I like that with the scout suit I have a lot of mobility though, which helps me keep my opponents in the sweet spot of the laser rifle. I typically use the following with it on my STD Gallente scout suit: High: Basic shield extender Low: Basic armor repper Low: Enhanced Ferroscale Plates Grenade: M1 EQ: Basic Nanohives It's very situational and I'll typically use it when I'm trying to back up a team of assaults, say when I am at "E" or "D" and they are making a push for the bridge objective "A". Or when I'm on Manus Peak and folks are pushing for "C" and I'm in the hills providing cover. Sneak melting hasn't worked out for my particular playstyle, but if you guys are making it work - Awesome! I've also died once or twice (eh, actually lots) to the overheat feedback damage.....
Considering all the burnstalks I got given I was thinking of trying it out - but you've just confirmed all my fears. Got every light weapon at ops 1 cept lasers because of what you've just confirmed.
Oh well, there is a bazillions things to skill into before I start with weapon ops/proficiencies anyway. If I want to fit anything proto on my BPO scout, AR is pretty much the only light I can get away with... |

I doubt this was me - but I've been giving the scrambler a go again, works well with the SMG, but ultimately the AR fits better and is more versatile and...this is AR 514 afterall . At certain ranges, it's hard to beat the ScR though.
On the topic of scout training corps, are there many 'vets' here who run a more recon/flanking (as opposed to 'infiltrating') type of gal scout with AR/ScR?
Most here seem to be 'Ryu Hayabusa's' rather than Solid Snakes. I do ok with this style of play, sneaking about maintaining range and I know there are crossovers in the playing styles (no scout can jump into the fray without considering many variables), but I'm not one to get in anyone's face unless it is a last resort (MDs and LRs... Though I love closing in on forge gunners in the open!). The shotgun is satisfying (only got NKs at STD, but can see they would be fun if they worked), but I just feel I'm putting myself in unnecessary danger.
A lot of the time I'm 'summoning' greens and blues with scanners and uplinks to get rid of enemies in the way of my objective.
Kinda feel like a scout outcast

Not sure if I qualify as a vet, that's usually closed beta terms, I'm a mere day one Open Beta fellow, but this is basically my play style in a nutshell, I don't use biotics (never found a need for them) but rather stealth and Hacking modules, I also run a repair tool for when I end up just behind the front line (it's inevitable really) But yeah, my style is sneaking and flanking at mid range. The "standard" scout loadouts just never appealed to me, so I made my own from scratch.
That will do me! I just needed to know other scouts have had relative long term success with something other than sniping/CQC - sometimes I feel I'm doing scout wrong...even though it feels so right!

But..but who am I suppose to ask about about pros/cons about going SGN/ScP instead of the AR/SMG combo I've run since 1.4?
Lv1 operations in the two former and lv2 prof/sharpshooter in the two latter.
I'm trying to maintain discipline and max out all my ewar skills and engineering 5 before 1.8, but at the very least I'd like to get ScP ops to 5 - I'm flabbergasted about how much better I can do with this new combo.
Now that I've got some real SP behind me. I don't need the range the AR gave (which is kinda laughable now anyway) when flanking, but I promised myself I wouldn't invest in weapons until I was done with ewar/fittings anyway...
Stupid choices.

I hate trying to catch up here.
Just a question about the board - I've been playing since the last time my merc had her funny walk, I'm only invested in Gal scout.
I get that there is/was a constructive point to the board, and im not going to pretend I play/ed an active part of th scout community (or that Im a good scout) but I can't help thinking its a bit weird that it/was also the only way to determine who was scouting before 1.8 was announced...
Like those films about Vampires/Werewolves/Aliens whatever - where apparently you have to register with proclaimed authority because of the sheer nature of being what you are.
And as for suffering...weren't scouts OP in beta?
This all comes across as a bit bitchy - love you guys really.

Well - thanks for the responses, both informative and supportive.
For what it's worth, I get where the negative view about the new scout reg. comes from, but it's a lot easier for me to believe that it's still mostly just guys who started 1.4/1.5 who still had to put up with some crap in an UP suit against whatever FoTM, without Corp support or any recognition from the community at large to help keep up their morale - the 'working/blue collar scout' as it were.
Or maybe not.
Now that I think about it, Can you imagine just starting the game, making a conscious decision to avoid skilling into logis etc., and getting Gallente light 3 just before 1.8 info hit? I actually just lol'ed, like in an unnecessarily creepy way.
In any case I hate fighting scouts - kinda negates my bonuses, now and in 1.8. Give me a tanked med frame not paying attention and a shotgun any day. Having to outthink an opponent is a lot more difficult than exploiting their weaknesses...
I say this, but every time I spot another scout, I drop everything to find and kill them... I always feel the rest of my team aren't taking the threat seriously enough...

So thanks - I normally wouldn't care about rep/recognition, but the dust community is so small and New Eden is famously built on such things, so it's nice just to know my long winded scout posts in this and other threads aren't completely meaningless.
I agree it would be a shame if this place got trolled or was the place people came to QQ about scouts. Ideally there will be a place for scouts to discuss scouting, and ideally, that would be here. Directing individual scouts from the new reg here is probably the best compromise considering the range of views being presented...this is all just 'IMHO' though.
That's enough about all that from me anyway...

Django Quik wrote:I'm thinking about the shotgun, as I tend to every now and again. I love my scrambler pistol/SMG combo but I'm worried that in 1.8 I won't be able to kill heavies with them at all, even with a 5 second jump on them because I'll have to reload/switch weapon before I'm able to finish them off. I can't reliably get pistol headshots enough of the time, so my advanced breach TY-5 with 2 damage mods will only be doing around 200 base damage before taking into account sentinel resistances. If I'm going up against whichever heavies get 15%/10% resistance to lazors I'm reckoning on it taking an entire pistol clip to take them down, by which time I'm already dead because they turned around in 0.1s or their teammate did. My SMG might be alright, once I take the shields down, but we still don't know what nerf they're going to be getting - damage, I'm guessing. So the only other alpha weapon I'm realistically considering is the shotty (open to other suggestions but I outright refuse to go rifles). So, those in the know (mathppia I'm looking at you []), based off currently available stats and the assumption that the shotgun stays as is in 1.8, will SGs be viable to take down heavies in 1.8? Which heavies get bonuses against plasma weapons? Actually, while we're doing this, which ones get bonuses against lazors? Theoretically, how much tank will those heavies be able to fit and so how many shotgun blasts will they be able to take if I land full damage every time? [wow, this a pretty tech heavy post ]
Pretty much the same boat as well - I have prof 2/SS 2 in ARs and SMGs, recently got ScP to prof 1 but only have shotguns at OPs1.
Skilled into AR because I had a Toxin and at the time it was the only rifle and I was looking for versatility. Since the nerf, and since I've finally got enough SP in various supporting skills - the OHK/high alpha type weapons are more favourable to make the most of flanks/ambushes. However with damage and resistance changes etc, about the only the only thing I feel I'll b comfortable trying to ambush is a Caladri Heavy - and scouts I guess.
If I can't kill something with three full blasts from a STD shotgun and a complex damage mod (one day I'll have points in weapon upgrades...then with REs out of the picture for heavies as well, solo defending objectives is gonna be a pain...I might have to start using something other than my Valour of I want to keep KDR goin up...
Been using the assault ScPs mainly for the range and ammo...if the breach isn't going to cut it, actually killing people could be a problem - maybe they'll buff the breach shotgun at least...

EDIT: just read ^ lol - I suppose REs may still be the way to go...
Ivan Avogadro wrote:The funny thing is when you play this out, neither of these situations matters to the shotgun. IGÇÖm going to assume a theoretically max tanked PRO/COMPLEX sentinel for each race. Without going into the math you get this:
- Cal = 717.8 S / 461.0 A
- Gal = 385.1 S / 945.5 A
- Min = 520.2 S / 622.0 A
- Am = 322.6 S / 1008.0 A
Now I am going to assume a CreoDron Shotgun, 39.6 dmg per pellet. No DMG mods, you get 475.2 dmg for a full hit inside optimal range. Each Sentinel will die on your third shot. The Cal sentinel is the only one who will have any Shield left after your first shot.
- Cal = 1st 266.4/461.0, 2nd 0/294.4, 3rd 0/-133
- Gal = 1st 0/824.3, 2nd 0/396.7, 3rd 0/-31
- Min = 1st 0/620.0, 2nd 0/239.8, 3rd 0/-140.3
- Am = 1st 0/827.9, 2nd 0/400.2, 3rd 0/-27.5
.
Thanks for the math!
So am I the only who might abandon REs? I only equipped them in the first place because as well as the HMG being so (rightfully) deadly in CQC, even with a solid flank (lulz) getting 3 shots off by the time they get that half a second of fire on you was a bit much (since in that time another red can down you anyway). Don't get me wrong - REs still have lots of uses, but indoors, it's all fun and games until a heavy turns up, so what I need is a heavy counter.
The corner trap is currently my #1 method of dealing with heavies and second is a flank and toss (lulz again) which is good for killing their pet logibitch as well.
I suppose I could use a ScP to bait them while also lowering shields - but I'm thinking a hive to resupply fluxes and SG ammo might be a better overall tactic for sentinels in 1.8.
This is all assuming I use cloak in my second equip slot - I suppose with REs/HIves I can afford to double up on the explosions.
Though if the current tank/AV situation remains as it is, I'll have to carry on equipping REs regardless...

Can't tell if serious...
Spec into and start using RRs? The idea is repulsive (and a little unsound at this point considering the proposed nerf...).
You guys have convinced me though - I do have a lot of fun with REs, I guess I'm just overreacting to the fact that:
1: the idea that hackers might survive rigged consoles
2: When hastily throwing down an RE to avoid a pursuing heavy - sometimes they have to actually turn the corner before I can detonate and just the split second of fire they put out before being exploded nearly kills me...
The concern is a little silly I guess, most suits are gettin buffs - yes, but in comparison, only the commando is really getting the relatively high level of buffage we are.
Whatever difficulties I face in 1.8 - I doubt it'll compare to what I've endured in the past 7 months.

On the subject of tanks...
Yesterday I was in match with Lightning and another RON1N member - at the beginning of the match, it was the older 3 point map (you know the one...) - we spawned Bravo side and I headed to Charlie to set uplinks in my suicide uplink fit I always start with. I randomly stumbled upon a couple of assaults and forge gunner setting up a defensive position on the hill behind - I took them out and as it happens, someone must have called a tank.
I begged someone else to take it but Lightning convinced me to have fun with it - so whatever - I hate driving these things (i normally just leave them to blues or basically force the enemy tanks to destroy it) but I got in.
I was turning on harderners and after burners randomly getting my movement and turret control all mixed up tryin to reverse up hills and getting stuck and ****. In the mean time the enemy was bringing forges and swarms etc. The other two were flanking the mini horde bein sent for me while I desperately tried to figure out how to shoot straight (it didn't help that I was 'under the influence' either...).
Here is the thing - I'm worse than a complete noob at tanking - that tank survived under multiple AV attackers for a good 5-10 mins, I only lost it because I purposefully drove it directly into enemy fire/red line (even then, I think I ejected a bit prematurely).
Everyone knows there is an issue with tanks/AV - but this is the first time I really thought, '...tanks are OP'.
EDIT: I'm sure I owe my overall survival to The RON1N - but you get the pictur.

Soooo, I run Shotgun and ScP. Neither of these are getting nerf as I can see? Which in effect means they are getting a relative buff. The ScP proficiency change isn't such a big deal since the relative increase in damage compared to say CR or RR is about 10-15%. The shotgun proficiency change means I am doing more Alpha than ever...
So I think...I'm happy overall?

I want a dev to come out and confirm the Shotgun Prof. It is not beyond CCP to just copy-pasta a list of blaster light weapons into an unproofed blog and call it a day. Maybe someone in the marketing dept might not know that Shotgun Proficiency isn't damage based? Until I see patch notes I won't know what to think about Shotgun, but if they DID change it I am happy. Peel through shields faster to get to the meaty, weak-against-blasters armor
Maybe a dev is reading this right now and...well maybe not...
I'm still wondering if they have also adjusted kick/dispersion on any weapons, or maybe things like ScP headshot damage...wait. Hopefully they have forgotten all about things like ScP headshot damage...in fact, lets us all forget I even mentioned it.

My next aim is to get extenders to 5 but that'll be sometime in 1.8 and by then I may have decided otherwise. My gal scout could do with more shields, especially since damage mods are being nerfed. I'm actually considering shield tanking my adv gal in 1.8 using extenders and regulators to have basically perma shields - is this viable? Am I being an idiot? Tell me now so I don't waste my time if this is a stupid idea.
I've no points in WU put 5 in shields - it's gonna be easier to fit two complexes in 1.8 and there is a quicker depleted recharge (but less recharge rate...I don't think it'll matter too much) all scouts are natural while tankers in my eyes.

My only 'wasted' points are about 1-2mil in plasma rifles (and maybe SMGs as I'm a ScP convert now) - the points in PR are there because that was the only rifle for like, forever (the same premise the DS refund was based on?).
The 'worst' thing though is all the people who will be respeccing into gal scouts (if anyone believes another scout will be more popular - I'd genuinely like to hear why).
That being said - cant wait for 1.8, now I just have to try and rearrange my leave for that week instead of March 18th week...

I personally think that none of the scouts are by far the "Best" of the scouts. Gal and Min are pretty good, but the Cal and Amarr scouts have their own flavors as well. As for me? I got speed, stealth, hacking, and assassination out the wazzo in my Min Scout. I wouldn't even dream of going Gal Scout. Just not my thing. I'm to aggressive.
Ah, don't get me wrong, apart from maybe the Amarr scout (not had the chance to fully digest update scout changes yet) - each scout is good in its own way. Especially with new changes, cal and min are very tempting to me.
Im thinking from the perspective of FoTM chasers/logi slayers (who realise they better spec out of logi before med frame slot/grid changes).
Lows to stack armour and innate regen as well as radar and dampening perks (I'm 15mil and only ever played scout - but I imagine seeing "you have been scanned" for the trillionth time can get irritating) - for those that don't spec into either heavy frame role, Gal scout l imagine looks very appealing compared to the others.
Of course, these 'pretenders' will hopefully get mowed down trying to play a scout, QQ over 'misspent' SP and the greater general community will go back to thinking scouts are 'niche' and over-specialised compared to what else is available and the nerf hammer casts its evil eye elsewhere...

Shotgun. 4 posts. Math.
Also, i'm sure you ruin a lot of things.
On cloaking - did they ever mention needing a 50% charge to activate before? That seems somewhat interesting. Also I am fully expecting the hack while cloaked feature to be nerfed in the future.
In any case, very glad fall damage/jumping doesn't deactivate cloak (a little concerned whether shimmer is applied while falling though...).
Would love to see GIF of someone sprinting cloaked at roughly 30m range - right now, it seems like greatest benefit will be the lack of name/chevron since visually it seems as much if not more noticeable...
They mention on hit VFX being displayed - I take it this means being fired upon doesn't decloak you?
Lastly, no mention of SFX on cloak/decloak...

- jumping behind the red squad entering the point, OHKing the lot...
- waiting ready for a ScP headshot on that wounded assault who thinks they are about to enter safe cover
- detonating an RE (that you kinda accidentally placed a while ago) because you can see a red dot about to run over it on your extended passive...
Does any other role makes you feel this good about being such a **** (that's the 'C' word btw...)?

I've been saying this for a while.
To help clarify for others - i'll make a COD example (ikr!): there was that perk that made you invisible to UAVs.
Perk was obviously useless unless someone called in a UAV.
Scanners = UAVs.
Or: if a tree falls in a forest if a dampened scout walks through a forest but no one scans the forest (because they can't 360 anymore) - how useful was the scouts dampening bonus?

Appia and Bayeth just pointed the issues with passive scan so learn how to work around them until they can be fixed. Its still a better option for a scout as it costs nothing and frees up an equipment slot.
- Unless of course you are running that role for your squad where you scan for them and then flank once they engage.
I'm assuming this wasn't aimed at me in any way. I love my passive, it was the other thing I was agreeing with.
The active changes are for the best. It is stupid that flanking manoeuvres are kinda impossible improbable for anything but a scout. It's just accepting that with scanners being more tactical in use (you don't have to worry about every ballerina scrub randomly picking you up on scans), dampening is less essential.
Basically the more OP something is, the more valuable it's direct counter becomes. If something stops being OP...

If you disagree, let it be known or forever hold your peace...
Or something.
Since my Valor/STD is bugged, I've been forced to use advanced fits. I've had the most success with two precisons mods in highs, complex damp, complex range amp and Ench cardio regs + ADV cloak.
One thing that has occurred to me is that if the damp bonus was taken off cloak - cal and min scouts wouldn't have a chance, or rather Gal would have a further advantage - they are the currently the only ones I have to watch out for with my eyeholes. Damp bonus+more able to spare lows for dampeners...
When it comes down to it, I dont believe the cloak QQ is about cloaks. I think some people just aren't used to the graphical effect of cloak - anyone half decent can see though it (Been on the recieving end of hiding in a corner - unaware red sorta walks by, then turns around double checks corner and im dead...).
Also, people just aren't used to dealing with scouts full stop. Before 1.8 I've been in normal squads when facing the likes of RON1N and my squad didn't have a clue how to deal with their tactics effectively and raged at their deaths. I wonder if every time somebody dies to a scout they didn't see, they assume the scout was relying on cloak to stay hidden?
They already feel blind in general because ADV 360 scan crutch has been removed. Does anyone remember the first few weeks of the orginal tac-net changes before everybody realised they could abuse scans. Some people were really slow to catch on...like they couldn't conciously accept intel could be as OP as brick tanking and damage mod stacking. Everyone moved in large groups and really zerged points - the same thing is happening again.
Honestly, I think the cloak QQ would die down more if assaults were worth using for assaulters...

That has been my gripe about EWAR so far - it's all hard numbers. Either have Lv X in whatever and equip X level mod to avoid whatever scan or don't bother at all. The difference between someone who has SP invested in related skills and has specific items equipped and someone that doesn't is much starker than someone with more skills in damage and tank mods.
That is why running STD scout fits seemed so viable last patch - my Valor avoided ADV scans as easily as my proto. If I could fit a CRG on it everything else was pretty much gravy. Tasty but not necessary.

I currently run full ewar - not a single tank or damage mod.
I might drop the precision mods, cardio reg and dampener for tank in the future.
It really doesn't matter - all scouts play their scouts differently.
To me it matters how assault/logi slayers play their scouts.
The game has a problem with distinct roles and focus.

I elaborated in the thread - but basically you need to do all the usual scout stealth techniques to get the most out of it - but I'd rather they deleted the thing and gave us a new role bonus.
The Frustration factor was something that was always gonna cause QQ.
The 'cool, new shiny' factor was always gonna attract tourists.
Together the forum whine will cause a near inevitable nerf to uselessness and our role bonus will be meaningless. There is no way CCP will remove such a shiny new piece of kit though.
So now the fate of scouts rests in the future of a single controversial device...

mollerz wrote:What would you guys say the current delay from cloak to weapon is?
If that was doubled I think it would be acceptable, yet not crippling. the one thing is currently, switching from cloaked to knives is a **** show. The only alpha weapon that really works well with attacking from cloak is the shotgun. AFIK, shotguns are not OHK alpha unless you hit another scout.
I have to hit heavies like 3 times to kill them, and typically they get ample time to mow me down after the first hit after unncloaking. Depending on the heavy user of course. Some players are little guppies swimming around that are easy to pick off (QQ generators) and there are the real heavy beast users, and it is not easy to kill them even with cloaking and a shotgun.
Of course, this is all true if you aren't in proto. If you are in proto gear, you do apex damage, typically, to STD and ADV suit users.
The cloak probably didn't really add any difference to the outcome. People just want to be able to point at something like the cloak to explain why they lost versus just accepting they lost and move on.
I've been saying this everywhere - there is a delay if you manually deactivate; if that animation plays any time you switched out to weapon I'd say that is balanced, and doesn't require specifically adding in new delay timers or anything.
And yes, I said before patch dropped - people would QQ over scout surprise attacks in game before 1.8, now with scout buffs and cloaks they feel safer taking that QQ to forums.
Also, am I the only one perfectly comfortable with STD cloak?
On that note - cloak timer glitches, my ADV cloak acts like it has STD timer when I switch suits or something (part of the reason I avoid them...). At the vey least my cloak keeps deactivating when I clearly have time left.
Somebody had probably mentioned it already - I hope.

I'm not even running a cloak on my caldari build. it's just not necessary since I can basically see everything coming. But on suits where I do have a cloak- the basic just runs out of juice on big maps or during prolonged stalking missions. Conversely, if you are being hunted by the heavies you just karate chopped, having more time is better.
While having more time clacked is naturally better, I find myself not really needing it too often. Though I'm a gal scout who uses a complex damp if ever I spot a cal scout or get scanned, so I'm not reliant on the actual damp bonus.
At first I was using it in a lot of situations (play testing if you will) - and basically found it was of little use, to some extent detrimental (especially cause of the finicky equipment wheel). So I played without it and started playing like I use to - doing all the things I would normally do to evade LOS and detection - being a bit more patient. Then I started realising in particular situations 'a clack would have been useful here...'.
The main uses I have for it are hacking CRUs etc. and crossing open terrain (especially to reach objectives where you know reds are waiting) and occasionally those 'oh ****' moments like after solo guarding a point they send a whole squad covering all exits - though, that's the only time I wish I had ADV, cause sometimes I'm all like 'hack the point and gtfo already!'.
So for the most part, I don't do anything special with the clack, I just use it to help minimise chances of detection in those risky situations - the STD works just fine for that.
On that note - I mainly find myself abusing the clack and shoot glitch against other invisibles - there is that moment where you both notice each others shimmer and its the fastest draw wins.

Twas coverd somewhat in IWS's cloak thread (along with the brick tanking issue). I'm thinking it could be beneficial if it was a scout from here that could start it up? I don't know a single player, scout or otherwise that has argued it is a good thing.
Just saying It might be good in lowering the chance of a mob wih torches and pitchforks turning up outside the barbershop.
That way we can set the parameters of any 'nerf' a bit. There are people that are already calling for a mandatory cool down period after deactivation, lowering recharge times, increasing overall shimmer etc. When really I think the insta-shoot glitch(?) is the single biggest instigator to clack QQ.
No other single piece of equipment is so central to how a role is balanced and Id rather it didn't to through the usual CCP nerf/buff cycle (wishful thinking I know).

Ok.
I'm probably gonna post a thread asking for cloaks to be removed. I don't expect anybody to really care, but I'll be posting from the perspective of a scout and I don't want anyone, especially you guys thinking I in any way think I represent the 'scout community'.
I just cannot stand to see more scout/cloak QQ.
I mean apparently Shotguns are OP now..
Is anybody as concerned as I am that CCP is simply gonna nerf the hell out of scouts before even fixing the weapon switch declack issue, the unbalanced cost armour plating or the poor state of assaults?
Like increase clack fitting cost and half duration and remove Low slots because 'brick tanking is OP (but only on scouts apparently...)'.
The QQ base will never accept cloaks. People raged about 'invisible scouts' shotgunning them in the back before clacks. Now their QQ is 'legitimised'.
Out of all the rebalancing in 1.8 - the extra slots, pg/CPU and base stat improvement. Our role bonus is what I was most disappointed in and happiest to see changed to something less...contentious.
If it gets the FoTM chasers to reconsider going Sentinel/Commando instead, that will help ease scout QQ in itself right???

Tl;dr Wow - great discussion. Im going to hold off - if only because responding to all these points took so long...
@ Murt - I hope I haven't given the impression that I think cloaks are actually OP - a few balance issues aside at worst I find dealing with cloaks almost as annoying as snipers or heavy+LAVs. 'Almost' because bad clackers are actually easy kills.
@ Quill - I was slyly thinking of using some kind of reverse psychology to get people to deal with the reasons scouts are this popular (though I think frames use is more varied in 1.8 - the lack of assaults is whats noticeable though). Bottom line is - I trust CCP to follow the QQ more than sensible suggestions. Rebalancing armour plates will cause QQ in itself.
@ noob - my issue is that yesterday I was comparing using basic armour plates against complex ferro. For nearly quadruple the CPU and x14(!) PG, I get...10 less HP and 2% more speed - I'm not a 'true scouts do/don't do X' kinda guy really more 'wow - CCP you may want to compare even basic armour plates against any complex tanking mod...' Kinda guy.
@ Appia/Shotty - I agree with Appia somewhat about IWS, it is actually part of my reason for pessimism. Credit to the guy for the help getting us here - but have I seen him acknowledge or discuss the impact of balance issues I mentioned? The answer to that is no. I've seen him reply to posts about them...but it's like they are peripheral issues or something. Maybe he just realises CCP work with giant hammers, not fine chisels.
@Shotty- I agree, the situation on the ground isn't actually bleak as QQ threads would suggest, hopefully CCP's numbers will back that up and they won't act too rashly. They say however 'hope is the first step on the road to disappointment...'
I just don't trust certain elements of the Dust community, I think I once posted here the type of thing I've heard people I've squaded with say about scouts pre 1.8 - 'cheap', 'scrub', '******* gay' etc. The whole, hiding till your back is turned or leading you into traps thing, just lead to so much rage and derision from what I thought were 'honourable' players.
And now clacks are on the scene I see it come off the mics and on the forums, because they know they won't be ridiculed anymore. Cloaks are the physical embodiment (if you can say that about a device that's makes you invisible) of the type of gameplay they hate.

Posting a remove cloaks thread just legitimises the QQers and gives them more fuel for the fire, which may lead to scout nerfs.

I actually agree with all this and the underlined is something I forgot to mention, though I have mentioned it before.
It's a flash, shiny selling point and they would rather nerf scouts in general then be rid of their new toy. Heck they'd nerf the clack itself into the ground as long as they can say 'look, we have cloaks - we're just like Halo, Crysis and Killzone and other amazing AAA games!!!'

Spectral Clone wrote:Django Quik wrote:Oh for *profuse profanity*'s sake!
The cloak QQ is the most irritating load of nonsense overflowing these forums. The suggestions to fix it are easily some of the worst ideas ever to be voiced on these forums. Most people are simply looking at the symptoms and blaming entirely the wrong thing for what's happening.
Case in point: I keep getting shotgun 2hk'd before I even know someone's there! The shotgun must be OP and the shotgun cloak combo must the OPOP because that's the only way I wouldn't have seen them. And as an extra just in case, assaults need better ewar capabilities to combat sneakiness and stealth.
These are serious points made in many of the posts against cloaks.
The biggest problem with the cloak is that you can still shoot at least for half a second while cloaked before it deactivates. During that time you get your extra dampening and lower visibility (even if it is still blurry, it's a difference). Once this is fixed, a massive proportion of the cloak QQ problems will instantly disappear.
It seems that a lot of the brick tanked scout rage has died down lately - I'm assuming the brick mediums got scared when people started suggesting nerfing HP mods - so focus has turned to ewar. Now they want to even the ewar playing field between scouts and medium suits! WTF!? WTFF!? FWTF!?!? Make the ewar suit out-ewar-able by a DPS suit? FFS!
I still think the extra dampening bonus on cloaks is unnecessary - cloak does give a sizeable advantage already and if you want to be properly undetectable by most, you should have to sacrifice slots to do so. Ok so caldari scouts might still easily pick you up but that's one suit, one viable counter. Everything needs it's one viable counter.
Lastly, I maintain that regular armor plates need nerfing. Remember when the complex plate had 10% movement penalty and no one used them? Seems like a very long time ago now. Then they got massively buffed (did the HP go up as well at that point?) at the same time the ferros and reactives got introduced. I still don't entirely understand why they got so hugely buffed. I still don't understand why prior to that the entire game was shield tanking.
Armor plates currently give far too much bang for their buck but I wouldn't actually want to change that. Bring back the old speed penalties and see how that changes things. No scout is going to want to lose 30% of their speed to fully armor tank. And remember maths, people. 10% of 8.01m/s > 10% of 6.43m/s. Anyone suggesting differing speed penalties between suit classes needs to recognise that this already happens. Scouts lose a lot more speed than assaults or heavies because they have more to begin with and the penalty is % based. You have really pointed out everything that is not working as intended with scouts. +1 Seriously create a 'clack/scout QQ FAQ' thread or something in GD. Everyone just need to print the above and stick it to their ******* computer screen/TV/forehead/refrigerator.

Then I watched one of CEO pyrex's vids where he was passively scanning cloaked scouts with a Gal scout. So I looked at the table again.
Am I right in thinking profile values are rounded to the nearest whole number and ties favour the scanner? If so then contrary to the table scouts with 2 comp precision and logis with 3 can scan undamped, non-gal, cloaked scouts. I know passive skills will affect things as well.
So in conclusion, in pub matches, do you think it would be worth fitting my min scout with a couple of precision mods, or my logi with 3? Or should I leave it to the cal scouts?
I run one precison mod (and range amp) on my Gal. The scout spam in pubs means that there are enough non(maxed) gal scouts running about that it comes in useful. In particular if I'm tracking reds on my radar and one suddenly dissapears, I know there is a clacked scout heading in a particular direction that I can try and cut off.
I seem to sneak up on scouts just as they activate cloak because of the heads up I get. Plus I've noticed a lot of scouts simply hide in between cloak charges, they are easy (stationary) targets I pick up.
Obviously you still have to use your eyes, but Scouts have always been my worst enemy, so for me the cost/benefit is worth it.
If and when scout numbers die down i'll reconsider having one as standard.

Man... I can't give up das REs!!! I had a game last night where I was defending some objective and I swear the enemy team was composed of a bunch of lemmings. Standing at the top of the stairs by the supply depot I just lobbed em down and they kept running through the doorway to that building and blowing themselves up! Got 8 RE kills and a few pistol kills in 2 minutes as they were trying to take that objective. Eventually 1/2 their team stormed me and drove me back but by that time the other scouts in my squad showed up put the hurt on them. That being said, I may give this Injector / Rep tool a shot. Just want to clarify though: you can't blow people up with either of those, right?
I know zis place! This is pretty much what my sig is referring to (though it is how I feel when I solo guard any objective). It's great for kills even when the objective is red and depending on which/map socket it is, you can use the fact that on the top ( supply depot) part, you can jump down to get behind anyone entering either entrance - much easier to stay alive now when swarmed with cloak.
It is also a kind of a secondary objective on one of the Dom maps - usually packed with uplinks and hives, I've had half the team distracted trying to get to that supply depot ^_^
Anyway, I'm looking forward to setting up a dual proto (finally!) uplink fit on my Valor to tonight. I used my ADV uplink fit In a Dom last night - spent half the match (re)setting up a front for my team then flanking from the opposite direction.
Who needs cloak when you have 10 reds facing one direction and you can just keep popping out of cover, ganking the couple at the back and run away again?

@Shotty - I have survived the stun lock. It happened at the weekend, though I'm sure its not the only time. At some distance from a HMG firing at me. I was almost in cover already and just, just managed to slip into cover (in slo mo) with single digit armour. I'm lucky I actually had some tank mods on that fit.
This may have been mentioned already - but I only notice it happens when in armour (subconsciously, when the 'plinking' stops, My Soul fills with dread) Scouts have so little EHP it's hard to be sure (also, people shooting at me can be a distraction too).
Either way, this issue is just another reason to put off investing in Kin Cats for me (plus, running full ewar is so much more rewarding in 1.8).

So, to go slightly OT (considering I too am in Django's predicament right now)
I finally had a mental breakdown and posted that thread I kinda threatened to a while back.

Ghost Kaisar wrote:I stand by what I said earlier for this argument.
Pick one:
Keep Cloak skills on the scout and watch as the cloak gets horribly nerfed
Dump cloak skills, and focus on skills that have more to do with eWAR and the likes
I for one, pick to dump the cloak. I use it because I have a bonus to it. I actually spend most of my time uncloaked, because I prefer the ability to have my gun up and ready at a moments notice.
So to clarify what I was trying to say was basically this ^
I'm seeing some stuff here that looks like it seems I and other are suggesting nerfs to cloaks - it's actually the opposite.
If CCP do nerf cloaks however, in their special CCP way - how far would you take nerfs before you say 'hey cloaks are kinda crappy now, can we change our role bonus please?'.
@ Monk & Quill - I'm fine with the 'hybrid weapon' type bonuses - I don't need to point out the variation there. Even active scanners have variations - but cloaks are...well you know how limited that choice is.
But say a 25% reduction on Complex kincat fittings along with 25% CPU reduction (or increased efficacy?) on dampeners and precision enhancers etc.? There is broadness there that I thought would appeal to most scouts, no? In the end some people would be happier with the cloak bonus, others I guess would have rather have seen this handled differently and are now concerned about how it impacts future balancing.
@ Appia - first, lulz.
Second - I unfortunately have to (partly) agree about that thing about scouts who had their 'I'm in UP suit!' Excuse being bitter about being outperformed by other scouts. That is me right there. Pre 1.8 I hardly had to worry about my main weakness (scouts) killing me and other scouts outperforming me on my own team. Now though...but yeah -remember, I'm not asking to be nerfed. The opposite almost. Nerfs Bad.
@ Everyone - there isn't enough bar fights here.

Ghost Kaisar wrote:Django Quik wrote:Ghost, it's an interesting idea but would only suffice as a completely new suit specialisation, rather than a replacement or different type of scout. Not sure what you'd call it - Ranger, Spotter, Black Ops?
I like some of the ideas at least - would not get rid of the grenade slot though - nades are already precious as they are since we only get 2 and it'd be enough of a drawback only having sidearms. I still see no point in giving him a grenade. Grenades are used to flush targets out of cover. If they are in cover, the scout I made would simply cloak and run away instead of trying to duke it out. I would be fine with making this class a side spec. However, I would have to insist that eWAR capabilites on the other scout to be removed. One scout made for eWAR and stealth, the other made for combat and regen.
Fluxes!
I think the current Ewar scouts can do something similar - I'm sure I've read/heard that full ewar cal scouts are being used this way.
I've got a line of ADV Gal fits (titled 'Byakugan Type-'X'' - I'm that sad..):
*2 Comp precision enhancers, *2 range amps and a complex damp. Usually proto cloak, the rest of the slots depends - still experimenting. Proto would add either another range or damp mod (they all have STD flux )
The shared scan WP would be nice (even at base 2wp or something, just so you know your scans are being useful) - but it is not what I would call a combat suit in any case.
I really really want to back this, since it would suit my playstyle.
In EVE I was aiming for the Cov-Op line of ships (frigates really) and I try to mimic that for the most part, 'Cyno' uplink fits and 'recon' fits like above - but current scout line up also includes 'interceptor' and 'stealth bomber' type fits as well, and goin down the road you suggest would unfairly screw those guys over.
It would have made sense for CCP to introduce a separate 'ewar' light and 'interceptor' light variants. As it stands we are the only frame with only one variant and CCP seem to be basically using racial distinctions to mimic what they probably should of done by creating separate variants.

So I just got complex Kin Cats.
Is fittin just one ever worth it ? I prefer using my Valour BPO - and I always want a comp damp and comp extender on my suit. I mean, I've been trying just one and my overall performance is similar to using a plate in that slot - though it could just be psychological - maybe just I'm running away/flanking more?
On the plus side, the ludicrous fitting cost has encouraged me to go ScP/SMG again. I think all the ROF nerf has done is encouraged me to go for headshots more. I thought I should be using shotguns, but the hit detection...I can't take that crap anymore.
Getting the drop with an ScP and landing a few headshots seems just an effective of use of such flanking opportunities. The question is whether to go Breach or Assault...

@ Brokerib and Noob- Thanks
Just to clarify, when I said I always need a damp and extender, I of course mean range amps.
I've tried many fits and now I think is the time to put my trusty Valor to one side as my main pub suit. I've decided Kin Cats are the ****, but the fitting costs meas losing too much versatility on STD fits (I was ok forgoing higher tiers, since before it was case of just 'a bit more damage/Tank/cloak' etc.).
I've got two variations I use now:
Both have Comp Damp, Comp Range Amp and Comp Kin Cat in lows. Toxin AR/SMG, STD Flux in weapons.
I have my skirmisher - 2 Comp Extenders in Highs, STD Cloak/Nano Hives. The Kin Cats really do help for flanking - after trying something similar on STD (with way less Tank) I've learned to GTFO anytime I starting taking fire and only ever attack when flanking. The Sheilds are great for this running away business (not as good as Cal obviously).
Then my counter scout - 2 Comp Precision Mods in Highs, Proto Cloak and REs. This is for those battles where scouts are securely guarding an objective or I've got Caldari Hunters. My detection has its limits, but clearly most scouts don't run damps. Without any tanks mods I have to be careful about when and where I engage, so the proto cloak helps with that (as well as staying off Caldari scans). Hit and Run will often end up with me just getting grazed and dying so, my faithful REs are used for many traps.
I've got over 200mil ISK without trying so I should probably consider using proto more often - basically everything gets an upgrade and I use the extra slot for either another Kin Cat (1 feels great, two is orgasmic) or Range Amp, because Rail Rifles.

@ Django - I made a very similar post to this in the ideas thread (innocent times - before tac net changes and 10m passie scans).
Something like this is needed instead of this X Damps to beat Y scans nonsense.
Side Topic: 'AV Scout' - a thing? Cause my STD Swarm/Packed AV has been getting me Kills and WP (I 'shoo' vehicles away a lot).

@ Llast - Strictly speaking, REs+Flux are probably the thing I kill most HAVs with too (those 2 together make a fit so versatile...), however, too often I can miss a single RE (for no real reason sometimes...) and then I'm out of options really.
I'm thinking a full AV fit, takin advantage of a complex Kin Cat and cloak (Damp and extender too)I can expect to get into a position to just spam swarms and AV grenades at close/mid range before the tank can react - the range also means I can keep up the pressure, or kill tanks fleeing other threats. Actually, typing that, I've realised I do the same thing with infantry (with my scout, they may as well be tanks too...).
Solo, Blaster Tanks/Dropships I have to just harass and keep occupied (with STD gear at least they rep too fast to finish). I'm starting to think if I had just another scout in a similar STD fit, we could cleanse the field of heavy armour.

@ King - that is pretty much the case, before 1.8 I could spend all match swarming away HAVs/DS, but I'd never really kill them, I'd have min WP and just less ISK, than if I went RE/FLux and just took out HAVs/LAVs opportunistically.
With the recent nerfs and WP rewards, I get something for the effort and its more likely I might actually kill something, and that means more people are bringing in some kind of AV, which I turn makes it even easier to kill things - I don't mind too much when MLT swarm 'steals' my kill
I do feel a lot Pilots are very aware of the threat of scouts with REs now - they don't seem to stay still as much and more likely to react to the 'beep' of doom (lol @ activating hardeners when I missed my RE anyway).
@ Django/Brokerib - I did try RE/Hives (when we found out we were getting two slots, who didn't consider this combo in general?) I found the same issue as Django - the positioning/range for swarming and REing don't mesh for me - its like using a Sniper/NKs I guess.
Personally I find avoiding infantry a big concern (there is only so much my Toxin SMG and basic shield extender can take...), and swarms are obviously "noticeable". Positioning seems to be everything - picking a point where infantry and vehicles can't retaliate against easily/easier to run away from while I quickly 'dump my load' seems to be best for now.

Just wondering if anyone knows the progression for stacking amps? From my rough calc it was 43.5 for 1, 63 for 2, and 91 for 3 for a minmatar scout. Wasn't sure if stacking penalties applied.
Kinda ironic - I thought Haerr linked his own work

Haha. I didn't mean to be so negative.
It really is a shame I spent so long just lurking here and that I didn't get to play with you guys more (or maybe at all).
If they somehow keep dust as a fun (...k - I realise how that sounds) side thing, then I hope not everyone just disappears - I'm still holding out for some kind of final balance pass- I suppose if the game isn't going anywhere that might be easier.
It's weird how they stopped selling BPOs though right (considering it doesn't matter a fig anymore, without a market etc.)? And IWS started a[nother] thread on tiercide (sorry would link but on phone and whatnot) just today I think (again, weird since he knew about Legion...).
In anycase, I still enjoy messing with and testing fittings, and I've got the SP and ISK to enjoy them (really no pressure at all to manage ISK, or SP for that matter, now). In the mean time I'll watch Legion development and unless there is passive SP to be had - keep watching for a while after release.
In anycase, since everybody else is at it, psn ID: Thrasy3
I'll probably just be buying/playing Dark Souls 2 if not on DUST though - my 360 is telling me I've got an Ironman campaign to finish on XCOM and expansions to try on Skyrim...then onto PS4 and a new PC I guess...

So I had a like on a post I made in IWS's last tiercide thread (from IWS) which for whatever reason has been locked - where I stated maybe all this talk about tiercide was coming because they planned to make final balance changes to Dust before shifting focus toward Legion.
Judging from his reply to my post - it sounds like I was somewhat correct about why he has been promoting it. But I think all the discussion was feeding into the Legion design process...
I'm curious whether Assaults will ever get buffed and the cloak glitches fixed at least...at this point CCP could just be BSing about 'polishing' the experience...
Oh well - I still have 200mil ISk to burn on protofits- they have until then to announce something.
