Proto is overrated. I have 20mil SP and NO PROTO SUITS. And I still can kick ass on the battlefield. (Granted though, when I get that respec, I will have Proto Scout on the first day. But that is only around 2.5mil of my SP. Around 13mil of it is going straight into Upgrades, to max out CPU/PG, Hack Speed, Dampening, and Shields. Also includes Kincats, Hand-to-Hand, Proto Cloak, and Range upgrades to V)
You'll get that shiny new proto and find out that it is expensive as hell to run, and will switch to ADV for the majority of the time.
Hence why getting very good core skills and maxing your ADV suit is a better move than getting Proto before you are ready for it.
TL;DR Ignore this man.
You should be trying to max out your ADV suit before moving onto proto suits.
Only exception is when you are simply trying to make a PC ready suit ASAP (in which it's better to spend the SP on upgrades and just run LP or AUR Proto suits.)
I unlocked proto suits sometime around when I got 16 mill SP. I've used them so rarely (they offer almost no significant advantage to the way I play) that I think of going proto as just getting an extra 20% range on all my other suits. Which was very nice admittedly. But most of the time if I got killed while in my Dragonfly or Dren, then I would've died in my 160 k ISK proto suit. Maxing out electronics and engineering was a hell of a grind, but worth it in the end.
I have almost every fit maxed in fitting to the point where I have 0 cpu or pg left in the end, but I can maximize my cheapest suits using half proto modules. So cheap suits with somewhat expensive modules and get an excellent return on investment. ie my favorite fitting to run is a Dren with REs and costs me ~11k isk (has around 350 eHP i think)
Shield extender skill to 5 post haste! (complex extenders = SOOOO much better than enhanced, + 4% ? more shield on all modules) Same with the armor plate skill.

Wanna talk cool ****? Back in 2009, I was hired by Unilever to reformulate the Axe shower gel line. They needed to remove a surfactant from the ingredients list, something about it being a low dose skin sensitizer blah blah blah chemophobic wuss-bag talk. One of the product leads got the okay from marketing to start a line of "metallic" themed gels, and I got to work on a brand new line. They pitched cobalt blue, Ferrari red, and industrial silver. This is the only one to make it so far but I got to work on all the prototypes. Commodities are tough markets though. Glad I am out of that game.
I vote we turn today into talking about cool science **** day on the scout registry.

It's not that big of a loss...This isn't really the thread for rookie scouts anymore. This is more like the bittervets drinking hole (or bittervets choice for a close shave and haircut).
I wouldn't have this thread any other way than the mix of on or off-topic discussion. If it gets moved to the locker room....well thats the way it goes. Also, the "registry" has been closed for a couple months now. The odds of getting the thread moved back, not looking too good to me.

I DO need the extra SP for the new suits! oooohhh.. and booster on top of that.. over 1 mil SP per week? @$#% yeah. I'm with you SP trumps ISK. But no heavy for me, just going to have to settle for Hunting Ham
Unfortunately it is going to be a GRIND to max out this event. 250 SP extra per heavy kill. 500K SP cap for extra heavy kill bonus. Comes out to 2000 heavy kills over 2 weeks. Meaning about 143 heavy kills per day. That's a lot of heavies. I average about 3-4 heavy kills a match (though I would expect more heavies to come out of the woodwork for the event) means around ohh 36 matches a day. Ouch.
Hell, even with 10 heavy kills/match.....14 matches per day....

The bonuses while running heavy suits apply only to kills with HMG or forgegun. You're welcome to try and kill other heavies using a heavy shotgunner though. (easier target for me to kill with my scout shotgun!)

I stay as far away for my squadmates as possible. Though I do this regardless of what suit I use and who I play with. Because the whole match you're really just competing with each other for kills and WPs. In my book, teamwork is each player taking an objective and holding it by themselves. It's been how I played since closed beta. lol.
1 (or 2) scout/s can very effectively hold certain objectives. Mainly, the ones with defined avenues of attack and mostly enclosed spaces. With remotes and a shotgun I can keep most people off an objective unless they come as a 4-5+squad swarm. Then it gets dicey...
Helps if you're set up with nanohives and some uplinks on the objective as well.
On the other hand a scout swarm is deadly in its own right. It works most effectively as a team of two though. One distraction and one person nailing the red dot from the side. Switch and repeat.

Hopefully when I play next I won't be as frustrated and liable to turn it off after playing 2 matches. It would help if I had something to get excited about again. ie 1.8 release date/dev blogs/date of dev blog release/any news other than logibro saying that there will be news.

Varoth Drac wrote:Ok I'm running out of time. Still can't decide whether to stay minmatar or go caldari scout. For minmatar: - Loyalty to my current suit - Love the speed - Hacking bonus would be great - Knives are fun, even though I usually use a shotgun instead
For Caldari - Great look, seems much nicer than the minmatar - Love the scan range, though I'm a bit worried the bonus precision and any precision mods I may fit will be a waste of time as everybody will be an invisible cloaked Gallente scout.
I guess the real questions are, whether Caldari scouts' precision will actually be useful, and whether a minmatar scout with a range amp will have enough scan range. I currently use an active scanner but I want to switch to passive.
Sigh, maybe I'll just wait to see the new suits in game and base my decision purely on aesthetics. After all, what's the point of being a badass scout if you can't look badass doing it.
Anyone else changing suit or are people staying loyal?
All depends on testing of the new eWAR stats. There are some lingering questions concerning rounding of stats and who wins ties. If stats round up (>0.5 -> 1.0) and the scanner wins any ties (ie 18 dB precision still scans 18 dB profile) then Caldari scout will be viable.
If not....then it will be quite difficult to make Cal scout beat Gal scouts(ie requires stacking 3 precision enh to pick up gallente scouts with 1 complex damp/ unmodded and cloaked)
Cal scouts could still be effective against non-gal scouts but would still need at least 2 precision modules.
Also, we need to determine how the cloak dampening bonus effects stacking penalty....

With it, logis are just another scout. But... like, you know,.. better. We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming. I would love to take it away. That bonus is ruining my Cal-Scout builds.
I would love being able to say I called it (like what 1-2 months back) but it kinda really just sucks. Caldari scout works ok for spotting other scouts (non-gal) but really can't compete with the Gallente scout in terms of stealth, or buffer, or speed....or much. Yes, exaggerating. Somewhat frustrated. Take with grain of salt. /rant.
