This whole article is based on the following pretense, that CCP wants to create an enjoyable game that will attract and retain current and future players for as long as possible.
In order to attract players they need to market the game first, or rely on word of mouth, through you tube or review sites which ever the case maybe, once they have convinced a person to download there game and create a character and finally jump into a round, there current version of there game and the rest of the player base will take care of the rest. As of writing this players old and new are joining the game and dropping it, why? Well that's what i would like to talk about....
I would like to point out that many people have many reasons to pick up a game in the first place and just as many reasons to drop it just as quick, but think i can short list and identify a few reasons of my own...
The Skill Point System
I like that there is a SP system its a more and more common trait among FPS's these days, Dusts skill tree is extremely extensive and that is a good thing because it adds the perception of depth to the game and there will always be something to aim for, how ever there comes a point when a player says to him self ive been playing weeks now and i can only use weapon x or suit y i really thought i would have made more progression than this by now.
A decision will be inevitably made by the individual, the decision will hinge on, are they having fun at the bottom of the food chain? are they making any progress at all? if so are they happy with the rate of progression? if they are not happy with the rate of progression is there any point continuing to play considering they have just learnt there character will gain SP passively in there absence any ways?
Based on this players could feel it takes too long to branch out into other weapon systems or suits whilst maintaining proficiency thus reducing variety leading to boredom and ultimately taking a break or dropping the game all together.
Matchmaking
A brand new player will start his journey in Dust at the academy, then he is essentially thrown to the wolves and expected to HTFU or GTFO, (If this is compatible with your business model then so be it )
While some people are used to this or generally up for the challenge, most people how ever are not. This creates a divide amongst players. On one hand you have the causal player logs into dust for a few rounds to blast some fools for the lols and then hes out, on the other hand you have a hard core player, these hardcore players are the players CCP wants (assumption based on zero facts) but they are generally in there minority compared to the masses, and the server numbers reflect this trend.
There is still hope, matchmaking has been announced as one of the features in the next update and the bracketing will be based on equipment used. I hope this new feature isn't too late and I hope it is what most of us are expecting seen as there is no further information about it.
I implore CCP to create an enjoyable gaming environment for new and casual players in public matches, and let the hard core vets duke it out in PC or any other such game modes in Prada suits and Gucci weapons.
General game play controls
I often wonder how many new or casual players log into Dust using a DS3, and how long is it before they realise that a keyboard and mouse input is superior in most ways. It seems this is a pretty taboo subject amongst most folk or its just redundant discussion because the two are here to stay and that's that.
If we are honest with our selves and each other it takes allot less dexterity and muscle memory to get a head-shot from 100 meters or to volt over a heavy suit and blast him in the back with a KB/m input, whilst not impossible with a DS3 the same move only requires more experience and skill in my opinion, however both traits absent in a week old player....?
Im not really sure what can be done about this except make loading screens contain mouse and keyboard key layout and configuration tool tips like the ones you'll see for the DS3 in an attempt to promote choice.
Summary
I feel that these are the biggest factors in why a new or casual player would wish to stop or just take a break from Dust. There other smaller contributors that would make a player frown with disappointment but probably not enough to turn there back on this game. I could just be wrong and CCP are not concerning themselves with numbers taking the approach that quality over quantity will win the day.
As for me im really trying my hardest to like this game, if it will allow me to, but if i do break from this game ill be next door in eve hehe.
If you have made it this far go make a coffee you have earned it
Thanks for reading

Well there is one activity, shoot people after a lobby session. Its not exactly an exciting window into new eden. Nor is it particularly ground breaking at the moment.
Yes i agree and this would apply more to the 'veteran player' demographic where for them, the game has become stagnant

ok
The thing that will keep players playing this game is a USP (unique selling point) - at the moment, there is none.
I would count the suit customization as a unique selling point tbh
When there is gameplay depth (more game modes, PVE, etc.) and a full and working connection to Eve, the USP will keep a lot of players new and old hooked.
Agreed but are a long way away

I guess casual players like me are unrepresented and are a minority here
Like solo pvp'ers in eve dodging the blobs getting kills whenever where ever they can

Maricus Nakar wrote:I bought a passive 7-day booster and thought "Cool. I'll earn extra SP for a week and unlock some skills sooner."
Little did I know that, at the end of that week, my SP would be docked by the amount of the extra SP I earned from the passive booster. Now I'm -64000 unallocated skill points and counting back up to zero. What the hell are they "selling" if you have to give it back when time's up?
lol wut?? petition that
I don't know how those boosters work, and i don't want to know.
I refuse to let a free to play game nickle and dime me |
