These type of threads rarely plague the EVE forums, from what I gather.
But personally, I think they're going to pop up at least once a month for DUST.
And the specialisation argument, whilst it does initially appear foolproof, I feel won't cut it in the long run.
For EVE, aggressive specialisation ensures you can take on the best in that field in a matter of months. In DUST? Since we're always in close proximity with other players, since we're always involved in PvP with other players, balancing items is even more crucial than in EVE.
Which means it'll take years to find that balance, especially since new gear and weapons and game mechanics are being added all the time.
And in that time, there'll be one 'specialisation' that outshines the rest, ourperforms the rest. Now, I suppose it's the AR. That assumption is based on my games in PC, in the Academy with an alt, with my corp in our local server, in every other server (except Europe, haven't bothered with Europe yet :P) and in mercenary battles.
Now, I don't know if there's one class in EVE which can outperform every other specialisation the majority of the time. Is there a set of skills that allows one to be a better miner, trader, hauler, PvPer, explorer, ship builder than anyone else? The very diversity of those examples makes the question rhetorical. In DUST, all specialisations are centered around PvP FPS combat.
As such, trying to piggyback EVE and borrow its successful system of SP which capitalises on specialisation may not be successful for DUST. Currently, we see many people taking a very pessimistic mood towards the game. Is this because of the SP system? I won't presume to know the minds of everyone else, but I daresay it's a factor.
Should we change it? I've made possible suggestions, but they were rebuked. Perhaps I was too extreme, but I don't see anyone else suggesting their own modifications to the SP system. Perhaps this is because the current system is okay? I have my reasons to believe it isn't, but there you go. I personally support the OP because it highlights one of the flaws in the current system.
