Let's face it, everyone AFK's at some point. There are those that do it more than others, but any rational person takes advantage of the feature whenever they need to step away from their PS3 for fifteen minutes. We do it because we still believe in Dust's future and want to be in a preferable position when all that promise finally arrives.
What I'm noticing recently, however, is that people are stating here and elsewhere that they can no longer be bothered to even AFK. The player count not hitting over 6k this weekend kind of confirms that this is true as opposed to hot air, and to add to this you'll find more and more AFK'ers in the MCC. I interpret that latter observation to mean that now our active players are also on the path to eventually leaving.
The problem is that the connection between Dust and EVE is so shallow as to effectively not exist. What we're left with is then a normal shooter that needs much improvement. In such a situation the players will naturally bleed out to other normal shooters that play better. Frankly, despite the claims that Dust is unique, it is not so currently. It COULD be unique and it COULD be retaining its playerbase despite needing improvement IF conflict was meaningful. After all, for many years EVE retained and increased its population despite it myriad problems precisely because the pew pew really meant something.
CCP, you're understandably wary of fast-tracking the connection between Dust and EVE because you're afraid you might break one or the other or both. However, if you want Dust to survive you need to take a leaf out your own book and realise that those that take few risks reap few rewards. Your internal magazine is called "Fearless" is it not? It's time for you to live up to that name, or else watch this game die faster than you can iterate safely. |

I agree with most of what you say, but the fact of the matter is that it's all pretty much been said before. Not to be a *****, but you're preaching to the converted here, and while I'm (relatively) sure that CCP is aware of all these complaints, it's gonna take time to fix them. |

I'm pretty sure they care about player retention. Or at least they should. Given the stats show playercount consistently reducing, I would hope they have more than bandages in the works. That's not going to stop the patient hemorrhaging. |

From what I've read Eve istelf was pretty rough for the first while as well and as far as CCP are concerned Eve still isn't "the finished article" 10 years later.
I doubt there are many game devs that are still patching and improving their games 10 years after release. Yes, Dust has lots of flaws but I hope that CCP will eventually get rid of them. It's just a matter of being patient. I'm not interested in the likes of CoD who release a "new" game every year and charge people $60 for a couple of minor differences. I would rather put some money into a work in progress type of game like Dust, and yes I have spent money in Dust to buy the special packs like the Merc Pack and so on.
I hope CCP aren't posting on the forums because they are too busy trying to fix the game. I could be wrong of course . . . |

I was in EVE on release day and indeed it was pretty rough around the edges. However, there is a big difference between the first days of EVE and Dust. In EVE we had meaningful PvP and PvE, basic missions, a reasonable complement of different ships and weapons, and an entire universe to go off and claim.. We can't go anywhere in Dust except the handful of maps they've given us, we can't do PvE content, we can't explore to our hearts content and lay claim to that empty backend system.. Only the same few maps, using the same few suits and weapons, endlessly :( |

CCP has always been in it for the long haul and the numbers in dust is still higher than we had in EvE at the start, however its much smaller, i loved those first few months down in 0.0 braving it out against the rats and looking out for players in those rare occasions we would come across someone
the normal gameplay is not great but no matter how much time they put into it atm its not going to compare to a real AAA fps game (bf4 trailer anyone?)
We are now losing numbers connection issues dont help with this, few times the sever has gone down i have moved to another game,
I think its about time CCP Harden up and say they know there is a problem with the game XX is how they intend to fix it tbh if FoxFour was not involved as much as he is i would have left by now, they have put up about PC not being great but we need more than that the weekly promotions forums post i had forgotten about them till recently
Most people who are still playing (not AFKing) are still here as they want to see the game succeed, use us more, ask for more feedback on areas, get us voting etc
E3 is going to get people to come here and try the game we need to hold them for the 2 weeks then we need to keep them with the promise of things to come, that's what we are missing now, PC going the way it went it needs to be fixed and increased size massively |

Harsh but true
we need some depth and that should come from PC and PVE we cant have the market yet and its gonna be a long time before we can handle the market so much has to change first
i would just like to see more info from the devs on what they are doing, what are they working on, what's their concerns etc There will always be complaining on the forums but guide us in the right direction we might be helpful and provide ideas
again well done to FoxFour for making the thread about PC, it has renewed alittle faith we just need to see something coming from it now, there is enough posts to start refining the idea down |

1.2 can't come quick enough for CCP but so many things are stuffed they are probably struggling to make headway on many fronts.

First, it is father's day weekend. Second, Dust is hardly fleshed out yet. I believe I see where CCP is going with the game in a few areas and it seems to me that the game will perform much better on a pc or the PS4...I'll bet 25,000,000isk that once the game is on the ps4 and begins to blossom into the game that I imagine it will become, based on my experience with Eve, we will see a slow but steady influx of new players. Some will stay, some will go. Older players will pit down their controllers in favor of a new game then return. Over the span of the next 3-5 years I am sure that the player-base will be such that we will see 20k+ on at any given time. I have played Eve on and off since 2006 and one thing that sticks out is that CCP does things right. They don't give up when things don't go well and that persistence has made Eve the game it is today and will create an equally awesome mmofps. I cannot wait to see what CCP has dreamed up in Dust when it is able to utilize the power of the ps4. I also believe that many of these anti-dust/negative forum posts are being posted by the compitition. Anyone who believes otherwise, I have a bridge to sell you. |

While I'm certainly not downplaying the importance of good gameplay, I am using the experience of EVE in postulating that more meaningful conflict would aid in player retention even in its current state. I and many others stayed with EVE for the longest of times despite large battles turning into a slideshow precisely because so much was at stake. There is nothing at stake in Dust, not truly. |

CCP made a lot of mistakes with Uprising despite the improvements it brought to the game. They're gonna pay for that at least until they put out another build that hopefully fixes those mistakes without adding new ones.
Expect the player count to get even lower until early July. Then we'll see a spike when they release the new build. If they fix what they need to, we should see a more consistently higher player count. |

I actually see AFK farming as hope and not doom. It means a player is still willing to invest time in gaining skills in the game even if they don't think it's that entertaining. If they didn't have hope for the future why would they do it? This game at its present stage is not the game it can be, but most of us still hold onto the idea of what it may become. Rome wasn't built in a day, neither was EVE. People are staking claim for the future, and AFK farmers are an example of that.

I agree with the OP. "Potential" is the word that gets thrown around a lot in regards to why people invest time and money in to this game in its current state. For an immortal clone ? Not much i guess. Sadly i'm not immortal. By the time they finish developing this game, i will be to old to hold a controller, never mind trying to play it. In the big picture it all becomes clear and calm. This would be true if we were judging the playercount over a day or a week, but the statistics cover a period of several months and the trend is firmly downwards. That, in essence, is our big picture.
I guess I'm going off of the instances I see when I log in. Like on on Sat. the 15th when I logged in I saw something like 6900 players. Same with Sunday, and back when I started playing 4 or 5 months ago it was very similar most of the time. I'm just not going to make huge assumptions on slight number swings on a ftp game that is still being heavily worked on. The game is readily available for people to play, all it takes is one release of the right improvements and more people will play it.
If they get pissed and leave, it will still be there, being worked on all of the time. I would never guarantee the outcome of the work done to the game or fanbase reactions, but as it stands DUST does stand in a fairly persistant spot. |

But then again... They are having Dragon Boat festival..... Whatever that is. Nah they are there, just in turtle mode waiting for the devs to shove any old crap out the door to appease what's left of the user base. 1.2 can't come quick enough for CCP but so many things are stuffed they are probably struggling to make headway on many fronts. I see the AUR division is still pumping out stuff though. Even creating extended down times to add items to the store. What kind of system is that?
This is what seriously pisses me off. The old content needs work, and now your new content needs work. Will you ever catch up CCP? |

as someone said further up i too stuck with Brink till its bitter end, when i could not find a server with people playing anymore However i really enjoyed Brinks gameplay, i put it well above where dust is currently, yet Brink failed hard, very hard lol
Dust wont go the same way, i dont see this thread as another doom dust has failed thread, this is a how can we get dust where it needs to be to get people to stay and play
for me the biggest jump they have made in months is the academy, it holds players till they leave the academy
I know i wont be popular in saying this but Dust has not headed in the direction i first expected from it
I expected districts to continue to be owned by EvE pilots i thought the idea was for EvE pilots who fell out with their districts neighbours to hire Merc's to fight for them, these would take many battles to take a district, for example
10 battles for a district to change hands (districts would also have sovereignty control) EvE pilots would agree a payment term with Merc's to fight for their districts, isk items etc
Merc's would have a rep system (like EvE standings) which lets them get paid more for other game types (empire pub games and pve)
We are called Merc's nowhere during my first thoughts about an EvE Fps with Merc's did i think we would own districts or even make the kind of isk we are making, always thought the real money was going to come from Mercing for EvE corps and pilots and that EvE corps would want a dust side
Sure i was way off what we have now is an FPS with MMO features which happens to be in New Eden, every update seems to push the game more as an fps, most threads complaining about its FPS features, when the new gen FPS games hit we need a very solid MMO on here to keep the players and not some forced you must login every day / week to fake the numbers up (can see this is coming shortly)
Said it a few times now but i really want to see CCP step up and say we know its not quite right gives us ideas and let the community work on improving its MMO feature set |
