Given how this game exhibited great amounts of incompleteness even close to the "release date" of May 14, I considered it imprudent at this point to spend a single cent on this game. Given it's current state, am I glad for such a choice.
Dust's only defendable point, is the fool's hope that they will fix this game the same way Eve in the Incarna period was fixed. And I am willing to give it a month or two to apply that. |

As it stands, DUST is not worth defending. I have a couple of buddies that still play after I got them into it, but not as often as we used to play RS, COD, GR and BF together. The biggest draw is the fact that we still play EVE, so in turn we pop into DUST just because. I can't get any HALO friends to stay with DUST though because HALO is just so much better at sci-fi shooter right now. What with new episodes to play CO-OP and a solid multi-player experience, CCP is not going to draw HALO people to the PS3. The gun game that COD has will also push those people away from DUST.
This is why CCP should be committed 110% to making the core FPS mechanics as tight as possible. If DUST achieves a solid gun game, tanks and air vehicles worth using and losing. Then we would see an increase in players. If this game came out 5-6 years ago it would of been supreme leader in the FPS market. Unfortunately it is not 2007 anymore. People do not like random spawns that get you killed before you are even able to move. People do not like not being able to navigate terrain without getting stuck on a 1 foot rise. People do not like random bullet spatter and poor hit detection. These are all things that FPS developers have spent years perfecting. Even on the UE3 you will notice much tighter gunplay as you go through the years of a game like Rainbow Six, whose developers have hundreds of thousands of work hours perfecting their games to run on that engine. From RS3 up to RS:V2 the feel is the same but the controls, maps ... everything grew upwards into a tight well coordinated ballet of mass execution of terrorists one round at a time.
And that is why I think the UE3 choice was a bad one. Hell the QuakeIII engine would of been a better choice for the type of game DUST is. COD was awesome running on that and the vehicles and the shooting mechanics that COD had back then was only rivaled by BF1942, and then ofcourse COD and BF took different paths with the BF2 engine refining the vehicle game with huge maps while COD went more CQB. But it still stands that no successful large scale game like DUST ever made it on the Unreal engine, other than Unreal.
The last reason that I can no longer defend DUST, I still play it, but I will not promote it to friends anymore because of this. Even in "commercial release" we still do not have a way to trade and sell items in a fpsMMO. That says a lot to me, when a company is willing to release a game based on player interaction, conquering planets and effecting another game. Yet, we cannot trade among ourselves or go to the market and post our salvage for other users to buy it. The EVE/DUST connection is nothing right now. We actually don't even need it, but where is the DUST/DUST connection? Where am I able to buy my ringer logistics corp mate Proto suits for defending a planet, or trade gear that I have that would be better used on my alt? Where is the simple button that I can click on to give the corp tankers some ISK towards their vehicle fits without having to wait for a director to come online to complete the me-->corp wallet--> tanker ISK trade?
Beta... That is what this game still is, and it was judged accordingly by every reviewer that gave it bad marks.
The potential is still there, but SOONGäó does not work on a console FPS after it goes into release. Even if it is an FPSMMO. |

I think it's worth defending because I enjoy the game.
It's fun to fight, and shoot my scrambler rifle. I suck at FPS, and it feels great to kill that guy with better gear than me with my last shot before my SR over heats (again). It's fun to know I cost that heavy with a boundless like an entire match worth of ISK because of that grenade. (JK I never kill anybody with grenades, unless accidental suicide counts) and I feel good when I can walk away from a match richer than I entered it.
I have fun playing, even if I am terrible at FPS, and still on the low end of SP. |

For what it's worth, I do enjoy the game, it was a good transition from over 1000 hours of MAG. Not saying this game doesn't have problems (it has tons), but in a game like this, it's often who you play with. I enjoy playing with the people I play with, so therefore, I enjoy this game. Randoms that do not have anyone to play with is most likely going to hate this game.
But yeah, I thought CCP had people coming in from DICE helping with the core shooter mechanics? How did they mess it up?
At the moment the only major problem is the inconsistent frame rate, that is the main culprit behind the inconsistent aiming and hit detection. That, and the weapon ranges which are getting fixed in 1.2 (if you watched the video, everything on the first slide are things that are coming in 1.2, the next slide is things that are coming soonish). |

Planetside 2 is no longer worth defending imo because the game is getting worse by the week the new patches seem to introduce far more GAMEBREAKING bugs than the week before.
The new hit detection bug is also getting worse too because I become the recipient of the said bug and was not getting hit when I should clearly be more than dead in several scenarios. |

While Dust 514 has a laundry list of bugs they're most quality of life issues that detract from the game.
The bugs that Planetside 2 offers are the sorts that get people banned because some people think they are cheating or appears to be cheating. Or the bug is so horrific it prevent a player from playing at all proper. There are also bugs that for the still longest SOE has failed to address. When your platoon is less than 10 people large you get plenty of time to notice these things all the time.
Like the force field 'exploit' that those getting spawn camped use quite often to kill people in the complete comfort of safety until timer flips.
You can tell me the most epic battle you ever had in planetside 2, and I can replace it with a simple yeah we took that place with 5 guys in 2.5-15 minutes. Undermines your accomplishments quite massively.
The last major place I remember still being a hell hole for a good fight was the Sky Mesa or whatever to the south but my side hasn't swung by there lately so no idea where they moved ABC to. The crown's moved ABC spots made it from the best place for fights to the worst place for fights. |

It is worth defending, if this game fails... No other developers wil attempt such a daring escapade for at least a decade. The merging of an FPS, economic model, business model and political model has yet to be done by any other game. I believe the hope that Dust will make all these entities work in unison, is worth protecting. |

Well at least in Dust its mostly the scenario of where I didn't expect to die but did die at least Dust 514 allows me to die now a days quite often. Planeside 2 I often at least wind up an immortal zombie once a session.
I only remember happening once in Dust 514 where I did die but the server would not let me respawn and eventually kicked me out. |

Quoting this one to make a very serious point as to why EVE/Dust is never going to become anything more than a game for 'Cult Followers', and another deeper point.
Most of his enjoyment comes not from interacting with or winning against someone.... but... From how much 'time' he can steal from another player.
This permeates everything about this universes direction and influence.
How much time can you steal from someone?
How big of a **** can you be to another random person online?
You wonder why the world in general is slowly turning to ****?
It's because now...you are all being brainwashed by games even to be cold-hearted cuthroats.
It's because now... you are being brainwashed to only care about your enjoyment of the game, screw the other players.
I hope one day, you all eventually realize the mistake you are making by supporting such a backwards company and game.
I'm glad, that I prefer co-op games over games who's entire motivation for playing is to see how much you can steal from another player.
I'm sad at the amount of players willing to pay someone for a game that is nothing more than training on how to be an *******.
So, what is your motivation for supporting CCP and their games? The hopes that one day you might grief another player for entering the wrong neighborhood of space? The hopes that one day you might partake in the battle that destroyed a Titan Class Ship? That is exactly my point. |
