As it stands, DUST is not worth defending. I have a couple of buddies that still play after I got them into it, but not as often as we used to play RS, COD, GR and BF together. The biggest draw is the fact that we still play EVE, so in turn we pop into DUST just because. I can't get any HALO friends to stay with DUST though because HALO is just so much better at sci-fi shooter right now. What with new episodes to play CO-OP and a solid multi-player experience, CCP is not going to draw HALO people to the PS3. The gun game that COD has will also push those people away from DUST.
This is why CCP should be committed 110% to making the core FPS mechanics as tight as possible. If DUST achieves a solid gun game, tanks and air vehicles worth using and losing. Then we would see an increase in players. If this game came out 5-6 years ago it would of been supreme leader in the FPS market. Unfortunately it is not 2007 anymore. People do not like random spawns that get you killed before you are even able to move. People do not like not being able to navigate terrain without getting stuck on a 1 foot rise. People do not like random bullet spatter and poor hit detection. These are all things that FPS developers have spent years perfecting. Even on the UE3 you will notice much tighter gunplay as you go through the years of a game like Rainbow Six, whose developers have hundreds of thousands of work hours perfecting their games to run on that engine. From RS3 up to RS:V2 the feel is the same but the controls, maps ... everything grew upwards into a tight well coordinated ballet of mass execution of terrorists one round at a time.
And that is why I think the UE3 choice was a bad one. Hell the QuakeIII engine would of been a better choice for the type of game DUST is. COD was awesome running on that and the vehicles and the shooting mechanics that COD had back then was only rivaled by BF1942, and then ofcourse COD and BF took different paths with the BF2 engine refining the vehicle game with huge maps while COD went more CQB. But it still stands that no successful large scale game like DUST ever made it on the Unreal engine, other than Unreal.
The last reason that I can no longer defend DUST, I still play it, but I will not promote it to friends anymore because of this. Even in "commercial release" we still do not have a way to trade and sell items in a fpsMMO. That says a lot to me, when a company is willing to release a game based on player interaction, conquering planets and effecting another game. Yet, we cannot trade among ourselves or go to the market and post our salvage for other users to buy it. The EVE/DUST connection is nothing right now. We actually don't even need it, but where is the DUST/DUST connection? Where am I able to buy my ringer logistics corp mate Proto suits for defending a planet, or trade gear that I have that would be better used on my alt? Where is the simple button that I can click on to give the corp tankers some ISK towards their vehicle fits without having to wait for a director to come online to complete the me-->corp wallet--> tanker ISK trade?
Beta... That is what this game still is, and it was judged accordingly by every reviewer that gave it bad marks.
The potential is still there, but SOONGäó does not work on a console FPS after it goes into release. Even if it is an FPSMMO. |
