Say a player has millions of SP invested in his current specialization. I'm talkin' 5+mil towards his current role on the battlefield. Now, I've seen players who want to adopt a different role make fresh new characters, and I've seen other players simply invest SP accrued by their primary character into the new specialization of their choosing and create new fits for their new specialization. Say, for example, a logibro wants to skill into becoming a proficient tank operator...would said logibro create a new character, wiping away all the SP he's invested into weapon and suit skills so he can solely focus on HAV skills? Is the 200k SP given when starting a new character really the deciding factor when creating a new character?
I ask because it seems to me it would be wiser to just focus the SP earned by your primary character into the new route you want to take and create a fit for your new role rather than creating a new character outright. You wouldn't have to drop SP into skills you've already invested in, such as dropsuit core upgrades, shield and/or armor upgrades, etc. Am I missing something? If you want to adopt a new role, should you create a new character? I don't think so. What are some opinions on this? |

it all depends on if you hit the sp cap every week. if you do, it would be beneficial to have two separate characters with different roles. if you do not hit the cap, one character with two different specializations is more efficient, as you said the core skills do still apply, but still costly to you to be proficient in high sp roles.
as for me, my character is a logi AND a dropship pilot, with a total of 9 mill sp split evenly between the two. if I wanted to go into LLV (Light Logistics Vehicles) it would not take long before my new car was at it's full potential (most likely a few days worth of Sp, rather than my current 3 month investment) |

I have several characters over two accounts.
Why?
I want to enjoy the various roles now rather than wait to have one uber character.
Keep making your one character uber with what he does and spec up another for a different role. |

I believe you have two decisions to make:
Do you want to experience that "new" role right away? And do you want to be viable while you move toward that new role?
If you feel you must get into the role right away then start a new char (dont delete the char just start a new one or create another psn account.)
But if you want to be viable and don't mind taking a little longer then just wait until you get there with your current char by saving sp. Just think you could have the tanker who also is a great sniper whenever the circumstances call for it. |

I am saving up 700K skill points to get Electronics 5, so the 500K that a new player gets does not seem very impressive to me. |

logibro to HAV is a pretty extreme example and probably lends itself the best to an argument that a second character is warranted.
if, however, you simply want additional infantry capabilities on an infantry character, stick to the same char because your core skills will apply better. you semi-gimp yourself in your specialty by going off-plan, but sometimes it is worth it. a logibro with several million SP who wants to get into AV can probably afford to get advanced swarm launchers and packed AV nades and then deck out an advanced medium frame suit (has sidearm) as an AV contingency fit.
an assault player who wants to spec into logi... same deal. the equipment skills that you spec into are generally useful in different situations on an assault suit (nanohives, uplinks, remote explosives) as well, so really you're just speccing into a new suit.
and the same argument for an HAV guy who wants to get into dropships or vice versa.
so basically if your two roles share core skills or modules, then same character if you can afford to go 'off plan' for a bit. otherwise, throw together alts to your heart's content. free 2nd, 3rd, 4th account etc. will rack up a few mil passive SP over several months so it might be something to look into if you really want to try a wide range of adv/pro roles. |
