Random Bullet Spread wasn't the real issue, though it was a huge part of it. The real issue was the incompetent balancing of that RBS.
In other words, the REAL problem, the REAL issue, the REAL iceberg that sunk MAG as far as balancing went was called Scott Rudi.... the yahoo in charge of balancing that crap.
What made it even worse was that after 9+ months of ruining the game with terribad balancing, the coward jumped shipped and abandoned MAG (he went and joined the Firefall development team).
Over at Red5 Studios, the developer of Firefall, it seemed that they weren't going to give him (Scott Rudi) any conTROLLing leadership over any importan game mechanics. For a while, that seemed to hold true..... Then, at two year mark after he'd joined the studio I noticed that his biggest public contribution to the game had only to do with cosmetics and other seemingly irrelevant cash shop crap.
........then one day, Firefall introduced this horrible new grind to the resource collection, crafting and gear unlocking all at once. I mean the crap level just went from 0-60 in a split second. The game just became undesirable for me at that point. I was really confused as to what had happened and why Red5 seemed to had lost their minds adding so much grind to mining, crafting and gear progression in a shooter like that. Then, low and behold, who do we find out seems to be one of the (or simply THE) leading dev overseeing this new grind philosophy? Yep... Scott Rudi
I honestly don't know why shooter dev studios stubbornly and defiantly employ such obviously horrid and failure of a developers like Scott Rudi AFTER they've actally become notorious for having PERSONALLY pissed of the entire core playerbase of a game they'd been given some leadership over maintaining. It's indicative of a lot of what's been going wrong over at Red5.
Spent a lot of time trying to relay my "opinions" to the Firefall devs on their irradic development directions and slow project progress. -Tried warning them what happens when you waste so much time on indecisiveness instead of focusing on content -Tried to tell them that the whole founders/cash shop introduction would ultimately create a backlash if they continued to try to hide behind the beta tag afterwards -Tried to tell them that their slow development speed left their game vulnerable to observant and clever competitors (Defiance, Destiny, The Division, Titanfall, Earthrise, etc.. etc..) -Tried to tell them that every non-essential, arrogant and overconfident delay increased the chances of their game failing -Tried to tell them that in the f2p world slow developing games can and WILL ramp up then fizzle into oblivion before they are even launched -Tried to tell them that no matter how buddy buddy they were with whomever their advocates at The9 were, all it took was one or two underperforming quarters at that Chinese corporation for their guardian angels to throw them under the bus or disappear altogether (this is currently happening to them right now). When profit decline piper comes to collect, someone WILL pay the debt... that's been the nature of those publishers in China/Korea -Tried to tell them that focusing on forcing plastic viral community buzz was a waste of time and resources (check their youtube channel views in relation to content for clarification) -Tried to tell them that they and the game was garning a negative rep, all stemming from laughable progression in the game's content development. -Tried etc.. etc... etc.......
I'm not so much bothered by the fact that I had devs shooting down my "concerns" left and right over there. Not so much as I'm bothered by the fact that every single one of them keeps coming to fruition. It's so surreal to see Red5 acknowledge and either incompetently or awkwardly address issues that I (and others ) had began warning them about over a year ago. Example: We asked, told, begged, demanded and even threatened them to separate the competitive PvP character power levels and gear away from the PvE, putting the PvP players on even playing fields. They kept ignoring us, and spent nearly a year exploring alternatives to our feedback, introducing entirely new (and ultimately useless) mechanics and systems to the game.. then, ultimately scrapping most all of it and just doing what we'd asked them to do over a year ago anyways #wastedDevelopmentResourcesAndTime
Anywho, actions have consequences. I'm not the type to salt someone's wounds, so I've been resisting the urge to post about the following article over at the Firefall forums http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/11/the-soapbox-the-soft-launch-scam/ That would be massively, Red5's (and it's creator Grummz'), own pet/GoTo news outlet for positive Firefall articles... pretty much throwing Firefall's development philosophy under the bus (just like what Firefall's owner seems to be close to doing soon)
Actions have consequences. Sometimes overconfidence, arrogance, complacency, or shear incompetence all comes back and bites you in the rear..... MUCH earlier than you would have ever expected.
Take note, CCP. Take note.

I'm pretty sure you are right. I think he's at another studio doing a PC game of some type. I'm sure the internet holds many answers....

Number one rule in game development. Don't listen to the whiners.
And by the way MAG is not dead and I played **** tonnes of clan battles in the last 6 months. clans are still having CB's now. Some days you have no lag, I haven't frozen in months. 100+ kills in valor domination against the Japanese.
it's still a good game

Zipper should have never thought of adding RBS. It would have been better if they added Dusts version of making weapons range specific by having the bullets disappear outside of the max range you want that gun to have. It would have been a better mechanic by far. |

That is the single most stupid line I've read on these forums for the last year or so, and that is quite an accomplishment...
Dust would be a much better the game if the MAG veterans could get more of a say so, avoiding the blunders MAG did and introducing the very good core mechanics, excellent communications system and ingame leader roles, just to mention a few...
If anything, its the "spreadsheets in space" that ruins this game. Its seems like most are only capable of writing HTFU when the FPS veterans bring forth serious issues. If you haven't got a couple of thousands hours in a good competitive FPS, what can you really bring to the table?

I was thinking about how much I enjoyed this game a year ago, when I got in through the mordu's trials. Anyone from that point in the closed beta can tell you about how many bugs there were in the game. Hit detection, lag, hard freezing the PS3 every 3 matches or so, but even with all that, Dust was a great game.
Scout suits were ridiculously fast and shields recharged very quickly. Heavies were absolute beasts in their tanking ability, but were also slow to turn so vulnerable to being flanked. At this point the classes really meant something. They were very different and offered unique strengths.
Most significant was that every class could really "tank" at least some damage. It was none of this COD era 2-4 bullets and you're dead like we have now. You had to put sustained damage on a person to kill them. It made the game a rush.
Then came the complaints from the few, those who didn't want anything new and different, those who had an agenda and vested interest in protecting what at the time was the potential impact dust would have on Eve players and their isk flow.
The whining and complaints resulted in severe nerfs to scout speed. Jumping was changed to consume stamina, still an annoying and unnecessary part of the game today. Shield tanking was nerfed and heavy suits lost significant armor. In the final move to make the game exactly like every other fps on the market, they make it so guns kill in just a few hits.
How they started with such a unique and fun game, and turned it into utterly boring trash is something I cannot comprehend. I thought they would revert these changes eventually and bring dust back to its roots but here we are a year later. They just pile on more of the same homogenized suits and weapons that really make a minimal difference in how the game is experienced. |

You were a beast back then man, and probably one of the reasons people cried so much to turn this game into a COD/BF clone.
The thing is, at that point in this game, a good player could take on multiple enemies at the same time and come out on top. It had nothing to do with class balance and everything to do with player ability. You had time to react to a no-skill player who was camping some corner trying to get a kill.
Anyone who couldn't handle an engagement lasting over a couple seconds begged and pleaded to CCP to completely change the game to suit their lack of ability.
CCP stepped in and essentially eliminated player ability as the main determining factor in this game. They probably thought they had to follow the trend of COD to appeal to the masses and turn a profit. |

I agree 100% CCP should have taken the good things MAG did and implement it in Dust. Like the things you mentioned. As an EVE player Dust took the Eve spreadsheet philosophy which works for EVE cuz it's a point and click game.
That same philosophy can't and will not work on a console FPS. In all honesty as much as i like CCP for Eve if Sony announced Mag 2 i would leave Dust in a blink of an eye. |

For the life of me, I don't know how Dust ended up being the broken MMOkiddy training wheel gearPRO shooter that it currently is..... with so many MAGbros around in the beta. I'd figured that this game would at least have the BASICS of skill-based combat down by now with so many players that experienced MAG giving feedback all this time.
Maybe there actually is something to all the accusations that large groups of MAG baddies flocked to Dust's early beta and did everything they could to handicap skilled players who didn't want to grind for months. Maybe, maybe not... I wasn't there so I really don't know, but with the current state of things (FUUUUU weekly cap, let me level the fruck up already, bastard) I just don't see this game ever being taken seriously by the skilled FPS shooter scene. I don't think S. Rudi is on the staff for Dust, however, Wolfman and one other CCP employee are former Zipper Devs.
In case you missed it, there was a post a while back that CCP was "bringing in someone to fix the weapon balance".
The FEAR tells me it will be Scott "the death of all games I work on" Rudi. I have no actual basis for this, other than it would just be par for the course.
And I think the guy you quoted above simply mistyped.
If you stand in front of a mirror and say Scott Rudi three times, really fast, you loose your entire playerbase. True Story. |
