This has happened to me several (8-9) times now; an LAV comes charging towards me at full speed, so I start throwing (standard) AV grenades at it. The first one connects just fine and the LAV takes damage as normal. Then I toss a second grenade which hits the LAV head on but does not connect, giving me a clear view of an AV grenade bouncing off into the distance as my merc gets a face full bumper. In a few cases I've been killed by LAV's and killed them post mortum; when the AV grenade bounced back over my head, and the LAV reconnected with it a second later.
Now is this an intentional mechanic? i.g. does the grenade have to travel a minimum distance? Or will it not connect at certain speeds?

So if: AV grenades = rockets, is said rocket supposed to bounce of a speeding LAV?

It also has the effect of stopping the LAV in its tracks for a second or two, if your team mates are on the ball or there are some swarms in the area, you may be able to get the darn thing to finally go boom.
I'll give that a try, better to go down and take them with you than go down alone.
But; is it intentional that they will not connect at close range/high speed? It doesnt seem to be an issue with stationairy ones (although you would probably kill yourself with the blast from the LAV). Or is it some kind of weird physics bug? |

Well I die alot to begin with, so that's no big deal for me ;). And it makes sense to me that the LAV would kill you if you blow it up at point blank range whilst it is speeding towards you, whether you get hit in the face by flaming wreckage, or are killed in the following explosion. And ofcourse; luring an LAV in to a collision course with some difficult terrain, ambushing it from a position it cant reach, or trying to get it to flip itself over on a hill, is a much safer approach than standing in the open chucking AV grenades at it. But you are not always in a position that allows such tactics, and that's when the "bouncing" AV grenades get frustrating. As the LAV not only kills you, but half the squad your running with because the grenade didnt go off.
On a sude nite: standing in the open, luring LAV's and killing them with AV grenades is just a lot of fun (I might have been a Rodeoclown in a past life) and actually works pretty well when facing militia LAV's. The drivers get so obsessed with adding another piece of roadkill to his/her streak that they start to suffer from tunnel vision.
I had a very memorable dual with a Logi LAV a little over a week ago; I tossed 3 AV grenades at it, managed to dodge it, put down 2 nanohives and started hoping around between them. It lasted for a good two minutes before he got splattered by a passing rail tank half-way through an 8 point turn to get to me, and i got taken out by a sniper that was probably just sitting back watching the show.
I use the K-2 Nanohives on most of my suits, seeing as I don't have the SP to run around in a fully fitted proto suit I mainly stick to adv fittings. I'm currently working on upping the tank on my suits, and once i get that set up I'll get the lvl 5 equipment modules, after that I'll look into a primairy weapon and proto nades. Good call on the repping hives though: didn't know they prioritized armor. |
