Obviously there are a lot of posts in this forum where people are expressing their opinions on the current state of the game. Right now, for example, the big hot topic is the murder taxi fad and how it impacts gameplay. A lot of people hate this current trend, and I will be honest, I am one of them.
LAV defenders like to try to throw insults and mock the player skill who is voicing their complaint about the current balance. "Get good" is a common response. However, this is missing a huge point. Just because people are complaining about something, doesn't mean they dont have the skill and knowhow to beat it, it probably just menas they dont enjoy the game when doing so.
Balance isnt just about making things fair, its also about making things fun. Are LAVs OP to the point where there is no way to beat them? No. Are they OP to the point where the game is a lot less fun for a majority of the players, yes, as shown by the vocal outcry about them. Show DUST, and this current trend of LAVs just driving around running people over to any potential new player and they will laugh and probably decide this game is not for them.
The TAR was OP, but it wasnt because there was zero way to overcome it (a: use a tar, b: use a sniper and stay out of TAR range, c: user a murder taxi, d: use a shotgun/nova knife and only attack from super CQ) the point was that the current state of the TAR made it un-fun for a lot of players who wanted to use more diverse weapons.
The TAR needed to be balanced not because it was unbeatable, but because most players didnt enjoy a game where one weapon was the best choice in such a range of situations.
The LAV need to be balanced not because most players go 0-10 because they keep getting hit by LAVs, but because the current gameplay induced by the mass LAVs is un-fun to most players. Yes, most players have the means and the skills to deal with LAVs, its just most players dont want to, and would rather go play another game unless this gets balanced better..
"Get Good" has nothing to do with it.
I want to play DUST because I like a majority of the gameplay and the concept of the RPG/economic structure and meta game. So I will express my opinions on what will make DUST a game I want to continue to play and what will make DUST a game I will pretty soon walk away from. Dodging LAVs or using lockon weapons or homing nades to kill them as they try to speed off over hills is not a game I want to continue playing much longer. Skill has very little to do with that. |

Very nice points about what balancing should really mean. And agreed. Murder Taxis are just annoying. I rarely die to one (I don't move into the open and if I do it's because I have AV nades and AV weapon and am looking for a cheap kill as long as its not a logi lav). But it's just not as much fun as running around nailing people in the back of the head with a scout shotgun. +1 |

Brings up a good point about LAVs. It's not that we can destroy them, its that we don't want to spend all game dealing with free murder taxis. |

LAV isnt gonna get balanced (unless you mean LLAV which can take a rediculous amounts of damage). It gives people a reason to spec/use AV weapons. Cant tell you how many matches I've gone where I'm the only AV user keeping the enemy's vehicle spam to a minimal. If you cant be bothered to pull an AV for LAV spam, what makes you think people will do it when a tank rolls out?
Until people start embracing AV, I say LAVs are needed to remind people that this isnt just an infantry game, there are gonna be vehicles that will kill you. |

You make a very good point. As a dropship pilot I've dealt with an extremely hostile environment for the majority of the last year. There was a brief moment of glory, but the rest of the time it's been one frustration after another.
I'm specing out of vehicles, but until then I'm using my massive investment in Vehcile Upgrades to drive a LLAV murder taxi. It's that or get proto-stomped every match.
The problem you describe goes deeper than any one weapon or vehicle. Current game play is a shallow team deathmatch governed solely by DPS. There is no stratagy and no tactics other than "fight in a big squad and bring a bigger gun".
We all have to find our own way of having fun until CCP fixes the basic FPS mechanics and begins to address the depth of the game through more strategic and tactical modes. Until that happens it doesn't matter much if there are several murder taxies runing around or not. |

I agree with this statement. Players need to start carrying some AV, and use those fits when you see a bunch of LAVs. Dust is a sandbox, and the players need to step up and use the tools available to them to craft the gameplay experience.

I had a big post written in response to the cary AV sentiment. It boils down to this: LAVs current speed and damage tanking potential makes "hutning" them with AV impossible. You have to react to them not be proactive because chasing them would be at best, tedious and at worst, suicide if they ahve good team mates.
HAV is different, their size and mobility is limited so you can successfully go out and hunt HAV with AV. With LAV you have to play passive and react to them coming to you, not vice versa. This makes it not fun. Nobody wants to pull out a load out to "wait" for an LAV to come drive in his area.
This, combined with the LAV limited actual effectiveness/impact on the game means there is a limited amount of AV pulled out to deal with them. Honestly if you gave LAVs a buff and let their guns actually kill people, then you would see folks pulling out more AV to deal with them because they would be percieved as a threat and a challenge and not a nusance. Not saying that is the way id want them to deal with the problem, but its an option. Right now annoying LAVs are just that, annoying. So as they drive around everyone just sighs and runs away and hides until they drive off. They are like nats at a picnic. |
