Are most people bad at this game?

I've only sat down and played Dust twice: months ago during the beta and last night, and half the time I don't even know what's going on. I'd say I'm fairly decent and just screwing around with the game and not taking anything seriously, be it whatever the objective is to the customisation. However, up until now, I've encountered mostly newbs. I don't know if they're literally new to the game or just bad at it, but playing online has mostly been a cakewalk for me. I generally trot through the map wherever I want and hardly anybody notices me, even if I'm right in front of them. When someone decides to shoot, their accuracy tends to be 12% and I just do my thing. I've noticed that the only people that actually put up a fight is the ones with upgraded weapons, so I'm assuming they're the "pros". I only play the "general" type game, if that has anything to do with it. Whatever it's called. Not Corp games or the other option.

I'm playing an FPS that's a bad shooter... perhaps I shouldn't be. If you're reticule isn't going where you want it to, you've probably still got aim assist on - try turning it off for a big difference in control.

In every battle only about 5 people is actually trying to win the match... the others are there just for the ride, and the easy ISK.

They are just as bad as the Academy players, but they have much better weapons and equipment that really make an unfair advantage to the new players coming in. I think that there needs to be an intermediate league between Academy and regular Pub play because it is not fun sinking more than half a magazine into someone and not even their shields have been taken down. It doesn't help that the gunplay is worse than BF3's on the PS3. There is so much input lag. I've noticed that people here think they are skilled when all they have is better equipment that boost their shields and HP up and weapons that do much more damage along with all the SP they have put into it. All of this wouldn't bother me if the gunplay was actually good, but it is what it is.

If it doesn't Planetside 2 will be a back up plan.

If you played your 1st game months ago then you also have a distinct SP advantage, due to passive SP gains. With that advantage e.g. You have 1 mil SP or more then you will be out of the Academy in less than 20 games. The players outside of the academy on average will be slightly better, just with better stuff and higher SP, but others will be a lot better and a percentage of those will also have very good stuff and extremely high SP.

I'm using the regular Assault Rifle that is like 1.7k ISK. It's not that the default equipment is bad, it's just that everyone else is at an advantage with their much better equipment especially with all the dropsuit upgrades they will invariably have. This is probably all in the plan for CCP anyway. This is a F2P game afterall. The grind to get on the same playing field as the guys that have been playing since the beta phases will be long and tedious, so they have the packs out there for people to buy to get into it much, much quicker. It's pretty obvious.

Having finally got out of Academy, I'll agree with this. Few people actually use tactics while most just have better gear and make it difficult to kill them. Meh.

Sometimes the other team is filled with the happy-go-lucky people who can't even be arsed to be mad at the game nor bother getting better, and thus the "I WILL KILL EVERYTHING AND BURN DOWN THEIR HOUSES" people on the other side will dominate.

So you end up with a need to go on forum to get some info. My best advice, ask for somebody currently playing which could give you a hand with skills, or Look at DS10 tutorial on youtube. Understand that when you'll spent your SP, try not to put them in unwanted skills, because you won't be able to get them back.

I have started putting them into standard things like assault and sniper rifles. I'll have to look into the skills more, though, because there are many things still that I don't understand.

Especially in the Academy, you'll run into people who aren't used to the controls, don't know which weapon does what, etc.

That means that over 100 times, someone got a big red message on their screen reading "YOU'VE BEEN SCANNED!" I've only noticed one time where someone who I've scanned seemed to notice this message and started looking for me.

Now if they put in a zombie mode, I'd be a BEAST! But really, I'm not great at FPSs period.... My main gaming device is my computer so getting used to a controller was difficult lol. I get too p*ssed at times and wanna omgwtfcontrollersmashrage quit lol But don't, I just continue to charge up the ole scrambler and die from the overheat with a few bullets pumped in me b/c I suck so bad... I created my character, assigned my SP, loaded up my first game and was straight into the regular combat. I just assumed Academy Battles were some lost feature from a previous build that people were rambling about.

You played a bunch of randoms. not a single corp worth their salt on that list.
