I was in for the Tech Test. I played through the entire Closed Beta. I've played it on and off up until now.
Conclusion: it sucks. It sucks really bad. The weapon balance is terrible, they've actually nerfed some of the default weapons to push players to buy sidegrades, most of which are priced at 1000 Cert Points, and the recently released MAX suit abilities turned the Vanu Sovereignty MAX into an unstoppable killing machine that they spent days spamming everywhere. That's just a small sample.
To further clarify the sidegrade gripe, you get one Cert Point for every 250 XP Killing another player is 100 XP, and up until recently, with no lattice system to give directions to fighting, there were no big fights because anytime one would start, you would either get run over, run your enemy over, or both sides would leave to go ghost-cap an empty base somewhere else.
Imagine having to spend days grinding just to get a GEK-38 and nothing else. The game is pretty much designed to be the most painful grind in existence unless you spend real money.
Oh, and it's $7 dollars per gun. The camo schemes are $5, and some of the cosmetic upgrades go as high as $10. |

Yeah, it's pretty fun if you enjoy non stop PvP. The FTP option doesn't treat you as much of a second class citizen like many other FTP games. While you're weaker at lower BR than others, you can still be helpful to the zerg as a medic or an engineer. The sound quality is amazing (something I wish Dust would adopt). It's a bit shallow as far as territory control is concerned but that d0oesn't detract from how enjoyable it is. |

It's pretty good but wasn't enough for me to stick with. My experience was
- Massive pitched battles - Big assaults with vehicles - SP similar to Dust but not as deep - Decent weapon variety - Air to air / to ground combat
- Infrequent framerate drops - More running on maps bigger than Dust - Hit Detection can be poor - Everyone seems to be randoms
If it's cheap on Steam I'd say try it out, it has some fun in it.

I'm around 40,000 certs and Battle Rank 74 in PS2.
Obviously its a full scale MMO style FPS with no "matches" its just non-stop continental warfare so similar yet different to Dust.
Its VERY unforgiving for the newbie, the massive scale of the battles means there is zero fairness, you can be caught with 2 guys vs 30 tanks and 50 infantry and half a dozen planes. When people say HTFU in Dust they have no idea. You need to play much more conservatively than most FPSs.
Balance-wise there are still OP and UP gear but on the whole its pretty much OK, there's a bit too much missile spam in the current builds for my taste. Gunplay and movement is on par with most normal shooters, the graphics are actually pretty damn good considering you're often running 100vs100 man battles.
Its F2P but you can buy access to new weapons, its mildly pay to win, some of the advanced rocket launchers and power armour (MAX) gear are highly desirable. However, you can play the game just fine without ever paying a cent. The certification system is pretty similar to Dust/EVEs SP, mildly different but not better or worse.
Aircraft actually dogfight and do proper bombing runs. ground vehicles are very similar to Dust.
A really big fight over a single plant can take a couple of hours on some occasions, it can get pretty epic, some of the battles really look like that stuff you see on TV at night over Baghdad.
Obviously there are 3 in built factions in the game which you choose on char select. There are some population balance problems where one faction is heavily outnumbered but nothing super crippling.
All in all, pretty decent game, the forums would have you think the sky is falling but for the most part there are only a small number of problems.
Oh yeah, they have a server in Sydney so I get to play with 15ms pings instead of 200-300ms like most games hosted in the US/Eurozone. |

Yeah, the hit detection issue is a big one. Half the time your target will rubber-band in range to kill you with their shotgun while you try in vain to hit them with a rifle, and other times your shots will actually connect, but not on their side, so nothing happens.
The game uses client-side hit detection while trying to support battles of hundreds of players at once, which is just stupid.
The client-side hit detection also leads to it being full of hackers.
Oh, and SOE DEPLOYED THEIR CONSOLE COMMANDS in the game files. Those people you see flying around in the air, embedded in walls, and shooting people while invisible aren't actually hacking.
They've just enabled the console commands that released with the public client. |

Admittedly hacking was a MASSIVE problem for the first few months but its been cleaned up in a major way. I used to see half a dozen blatant hackers a day at the start, now, lucky to see one per month |

the starter suits and weps seem fine. i was killing people with 1 bullet in the head.
i actually like it..and the fact that standing around with somethin like 100 other players having a massive shoot-out is quite epic. and watching a tank roll in and seeing 30 people on your team all bust rockets at him.
the big map dont bother me...needs to be like that with so many players.. |
