I was in for the Tech Test. I played through the entire Closed Beta. I've played it on and off up until now.
Conclusion: it sucks. It sucks really bad. The weapon balance is terrible, they've actually nerfed some of the default weapons to push players to buy sidegrades, most of which are priced at 1000 Cert Points, and the recently released MAX suit abilities turned the Vanu Sovereignty MAX into an unstoppable killing machine that they spent days spamming everywhere. That's just a small sample.
To further clarify the sidegrade gripe, you get one Cert Point for every 250 XP Killing another player is 100 XP, and up until recently, with no lattice system to give directions to fighting, there were no big fights because anytime one would start, you would either get run over, run your enemy over, or both sides would leave to go ghost-cap an empty base somewhere else.
Imagine having to spend days grinding just to get a GEK-38 and nothing else. The game is pretty much designed to be the most painful grind in existence unless you spend real money.
Oh, and it's $7 dollars per gun. The camo schemes are $5, and some of the cosmetic upgrades go as high as $10. |

If it's cheap on Steam I'd say try it out, it has some fun in it.
Yeah, the hit detection issue is a big one. Half the time your target will rubber-band in range to kill you with their shotgun while you try in vain to hit them with a rifle, and other times your shots will actually connect, but not on their side, so nothing happens.
The game uses client-side hit detection while trying to support battles of hundreds of players at once, which is just stupid.
The client-side hit detection also leads to it being full of hackers.
Oh, and SOE DEPLOYED THEIR CONSOLE COMMANDS in the game files. Those people you see flying around in the air, embedded in walls, and shooting people while invisible aren't actually hacking.
They've just enabled the console commands that released with the public client. |
