Hi,
i have used several versions and i find it hard to gasp the actual mechanic behind it? So some questions:
1) I "understand" the initial 1-5 sec directional scan and see enemies highlighted, but what is the 5-30 sec after the main "scan" i hear the scanner "bleeping"? Will it continue to scan or only keep those highlighted that i initially scanned, can they move?
2) If i sprint or change equipment this secondary "blinping" stops, so do i need to keep holding the scanner for the second phase and those very long 15-30sec scanner versions?
3) Whats the advantage between those 1-2 sec scan + 15-30 sec "secondary" bliping and the 1-5 sec scan + 5 sec "bliping" versions?
4) Will i be visible or highlighted during the initial 2-5 sec "scan", since thats what i did read somewhere, but no-one seem to-be able to confirm this?
My main problem is that i don't understand what exactly happens after the initial scan "sweep", so what exactly does the scanner in this "Bleeping" cool-down phase?
Thx |

To answer you questions when scanning u show up, Idk how but you do, the cool down phase is just that a cool down, after the scan you can do anything the eneamy will stay scanned. Hope this helped. |

Why are there versions with a intentional much longer "countdown" phase? Does this mean its a trade-off between getting more frequent updates vs seeing "older" scanned enemies longer, while being able to-do stuff?
I wonder since often i scan, than some enemies gets highlighted, but shortly after they disappear directly? If i'm using the 15 sec cool-down versions, shouldn't they stay on radar for the whole cool-down until killed or out of range? |

I don't have access to the spec right now, but the longer the enemy is shown will have less of a chance picking smaller units, while the shorter time will pick up every one, there a time they are shown in the spec of the scanners. |

Used active scanner for a good while before I switched to something more profitable. From what I've experienced, here's how it's supposed to work:
1. You point and shoot the scanner in a direction. It will display blips in range of the scan that will disappear if moved out of range during the scanning.
2. After the 1-2 second scan, at the *end* of the scan, any blips still present will be pinned to yours and your teammates radars for an extended time (I've noticed they go bright red when pinned). This is the duration listed in the scanner's specs. After this they will fade out.
3. After the scan, your scanner show that it's charging up which is needed before it can scan again. This delay is not mentioned in the specs, and isn't exactly the same as the duration of the "pinning" that a scan does. This delay is the "bleeping" you hear.
4. I'm not exactly sure on being pinned on enemy radars when using the scanner, though enemies do get notified when they are being scanned.
5. Of course, any suit outside the scanner's precision (lower than precision) will not be detected. You are notified (supposed too) by the varying degrees of success by the message it gives you. If it says it's all good (no variation or whatever), then it means it got everyone in range that it detected (should, rather). If it says it was some deviation, then there were some suits that couldn't get detected with that scanner's precision (e.g. scout suits). If it says results were totally unreliable, then it means the scanner's much too weak and none of the suits it detected could be blipped/pinned cuz scanner precision wasn't high enough.
Now, that's how it is *supposed* to work. In reality, I've found the active scanners are broken - very broken. There are many times when you will use the highest precision scanner shooting directly in the face of a tank (which has very high scan profile) and it still won't register. i've also had games where I can use the lowest level scanner and hit scout suits. Finally, the results vary even after the fact; you can end up blipping people with it but they never end up pinning after scan, and sometimes you hit no one when the results it tells you says it went perfect.
Overall, the active scanners are a broken mess, and are a very heavy gamble. You're better off using some other equipment for the time being. I want the scanners to work, but I've found they are best used in Academy games where they at least have the highest chance of success - anything else and it's a crapshoot. |

Ah thx, thats around the same experience i had using those. I did not notice that the "recharge" and the "scan duration" are 2 separate timers, mainly because i was using the 5sec duration variants and the recharge "seemed" similar to this.
What i can add, is that after the scan and "pin" u can safely put away the scanner and if u are "lucky" all scanned enemies will stay on radar for the "duration" listed in the scanner stats.
I can also confirm that the scanner is using a cone for vertical and horizontal scanning, means if u are up a building u need to look down a little to get better results.
It seems some variants are better at getting a "valid" result, while other with similar db values fluctuate more often and wont pickup enemies.
So one more "broken" equipment from CCP on there "released" game, but obviously not as broken as the nanite injector, but still kinda disappointing. |

Yes, what I would normally do as a strategy is start scanning, make a 360' sweep to get all the blips, and if I find anyone of worth I would point in that direction at the end of the scan or with the next scan. Of course, one can switch to guns or anything else after a scan has pinned enemies (which makes Quantum scanners more worthwhile for their long duration times).
The most unfortunate part about the scanner is that everyone knows it's broken like the rest of the game, but it's lowest priority right now. Nanite Injectors will get more attention first before the scanners do. Though I can kinda understand about the scanners, I mean it was tacked back on the game hastily after they were removed from beta, but that still doesn't excuse them being worthless pieces of junk. |

Basically, if your scanner is weaker than enemies signature suppressor, you won't spot anyone or light them up for teammates. |

To say it's broken is little confusing since I have been getting good results with it. True, sometimes the usage is wonky but I got an idea: How about CCP meant it to be that way? I mean, what if there's supposed to be some margin of error with its usage?
Nobody knows, and CCP as hell ain't telling us. (Looking at you, devs. Grr) |

Like noted, i think scanners simply got "slapped" on to this "released" game, without extensive testing. They did not even bother to check there active scanner AUR prices and stats or there wont be two identically AUR scanners, with different AUR pricing in the market. Seems they have more important stuff to-do, which is understandable, given that the stupid nanite injector is not even working correctly, without giving an ETA on it.
Things like this make me sad, since CCP using the same attitude than other game developers/publishers and releasing obviously unfinished and buggy products with a big PR tam tam, because this is what "works" these days. I can understand this business wise, but as a gamer i hate this policy. |
