Used active scanner for a good while before I switched to something more profitable. From what I've experienced, here's how it's supposed to work:
1. You point and shoot the scanner in a direction. It will display blips in range of the scan that will disappear if moved out of range during the scanning.
2. After the 1-2 second scan, at the *end* of the scan, any blips still present will be pinned to yours and your teammates radars for an extended time (I've noticed they go bright red when pinned). This is the duration listed in the scanner's specs. After this they will fade out.
3. After the scan, your scanner show that it's charging up which is needed before it can scan again. This delay is not mentioned in the specs, and isn't exactly the same as the duration of the "pinning" that a scan does. This delay is the "bleeping" you hear.
4. I'm not exactly sure on being pinned on enemy radars when using the scanner, though enemies do get notified when they are being scanned.
5. Of course, any suit outside the scanner's precision (lower than precision) will not be detected. You are notified (supposed too) by the varying degrees of success by the message it gives you. If it says it's all good (no variation or whatever), then it means it got everyone in range that it detected (should, rather). If it says it was some deviation, then there were some suits that couldn't get detected with that scanner's precision (e.g. scout suits). If it says results were totally unreliable, then it means the scanner's much too weak and none of the suits it detected could be blipped/pinned cuz scanner precision wasn't high enough.
Now, that's how it is *supposed* to work. In reality, I've found the active scanners are broken - very broken. There are many times when you will use the highest precision scanner shooting directly in the face of a tank (which has very high scan profile) and it still won't register. i've also had games where I can use the lowest level scanner and hit scout suits. Finally, the results vary even after the fact; you can end up blipping people with it but they never end up pinning after scan, and sometimes you hit no one when the results it tells you says it went perfect.
Overall, the active scanners are a broken mess, and are a very heavy gamble. You're better off using some other equipment for the time being. I want the scanners to work, but I've found they are best used in Academy games where they at least have the highest chance of success - anything else and it's a crapshoot. |

Yes, what I would normally do as a strategy is start scanning, make a 360' sweep to get all the blips, and if I find anyone of worth I would point in that direction at the end of the scan or with the next scan. Of course, one can switch to guns or anything else after a scan has pinned enemies (which makes Quantum scanners more worthwhile for their long duration times).
The most unfortunate part about the scanner is that everyone knows it's broken like the rest of the game, but it's lowest priority right now. Nanite Injectors will get more attention first before the scanners do. Though I can kinda understand about the scanners, I mean it was tacked back on the game hastily after they were removed from beta, but that still doesn't excuse them being worthless pieces of junk. |
