Here's the long and short of it. Now that I'm out of the academy I'm dying not a little but a lot. I can put on a heavy suit but the slowness and lack of options make it boring pretty fast. There are a few narrow roles that I can fill as long as I avoid combat, but my main problem is of general survival in a team firefight. Now that I've got a respec coming I want to get myself some nice survivability so that I can actually contribute alongside the team instead of hiding in their midst, feeling like I'm leeching off their work. I've seen several videos that are either very entry level ("here's the menu...") or else talking about long-term gameplans needing millions of skill points.
I've done a bit of playing on my main character has about 800,000 total skill points and I aim to stretch them as far as I can go. (I've got around 7 million ISK) I figure this line of questioning would be helpful to a lot of new players who've tried all the weapons and goodies but gotten frustrated. (or are making brand-new characters and need a short-term goal to work at) As far as I know respecs won't happen again so I've got one shot at this.
If my spreadsheets are correct I can do this:
1 Dropsuits - 3 Medium Armor (Caldari) which allows me to purchase C/1 series (14,280 ISK cost) which should give me lots of cpu/pg, 3 hi, 2 low slots. (and more slots is more fun of course)
2 Dropsuit Upgrades - 2 Dropsuit Shield Upgrades - - 3 Shield Extension - - 3 Shield Recharging - - 1 Shield Regulation
My thinking behind this setup is that Caladari are shield heavy and I'll be reinforcing their strengths. I can throw rechargers and extenders in hi-power slots and a regulator(s) and(or) whatever else in low-power. (I figure shields are more useful to a beginning character since if you get tagged you can back off for a few seconds and at least get your shields back) With a little tweaking I can put whatever equipment item in there too, and still have juice for militia weapons and grenades. Any more skill points will go to topping off shield regulation before going into...I don't know. (Any advice for what to go into next?)
My thinking is that I ignore Dropsuit Armor upgrades because if used they slow you down, don't regenerate without help and even with the modules they regen too slow to help a newbie anyway. I don't put any points in weapons because I've tried them all by now anyway and scattering points doesn't seem worth the return. (boosting armor/shields helps all suits, boosting a weapon just helps one weapon a little) I don't boost anything past 3 since all that later stuff takes too many skill points away from other things.
Should I instead get a more balanced suit like Minmater or Amarr and point points into armor? If I put all my points into suits I could go Dropsuit 1 > Medium Armor 3 > Assault Suit 3...though that would be all my points and I don't see much point in it. If my math is correct I wouldn't need to add points to Electronics in awhile either. Does this plan make sense to you veterans, or am I missing some vital component? |

Really depends on your play style. Personally I went with Minmatar scouts (light suit) and knives because it doesn't need a ton of SP in tanking skills since you speed tank. If you learn how to speed tank and pick your targets, you can make up for low SP pretty quickly. |

I don't think it's worth rushing to assault suits - they're not much better than the standards. Your plan is mostly good apart from that though. I would prioritize getting shield extension 5, because you get the complex variant of shield extenders then and they're twice as good as the enhanced ones. They do take more fitting room, but with the additional HP they give you can afford to make sacrifices to fit them.
Go for shield extenders in your highs, and regulators/fitting mods in your lows. That should help you a fair bit. Remember to disengage quickly when you start taking fire, as that'll save your life a lot. When you get more confident, you can drop a shield mod for a damage mod to help you kill stuff off. |

This is the alt I blew right into the assault 1 / Caldari with. My plan with my original character is most likely going to be a Gallente logi.
As it stands - I did the suit, and AR up to 1 to get the extra ammo vs the militia gear. Did the shields and armor to level 1 to get out of the militia.
She's a real Jill of all trades. I have a class set up with each kind of equipment. Nano hives, uplinks, repair tools, and nanite inj. The next step was to try some things. I've had good luck running in groups or shadowing a heavy. I have however - been utterly destroyed by anyone in a proto suit. I get absolutely violated by anyone with an exile / TAC / or insert any assault rifle that is above the GEK. I mean totally pooped on. EVEN if I have the drop on them. EVEN if I am SHOOTING THEM IN THE HEAD while they are engaged with my other team mates.
So what's a newbie to do?
Grenades. Just popping that slot open to level 1 gets you into AV, legit Locus grenades (x3) and the ones that destroy shields. This means I can fit up those many classes I built to do even more. And yeah. If you come running up with that proto suit - I'm not fighting you. I will put a cooked grenade on you, in between you and me and I will hold the last one if I have to. But you're coming with me. My suit is maaaaybe 14k. How much ISK do you want to waste...
In the matches where there is only one obj - I will drop uplinks in every corner I can. Switch to nano-hive and stand on it flooding the enemies approaches with cooked locus grenades. If I have a heavy to dote on. I use the shield stripping grenades and a repair tool. And I become his personal assistant. While he becomes your very own personal satan...
That said, not spec'ing into a weapon makes you very supportive in nature. It's ok in matches where people are using tier 1, militia, or maybe tier 3 weapons. But when you run into a proto suit - a tier 1 assault rifle becomes a BB gun.
So figure out what gun you like. And start going if you ever want to have a chance of putting up a fight. The grenades that strip the shield will make most in proto gear think twice, especially if they are getting hit - and those health bars are dropping fast. They will usually break off to heal a bit and try to come at you again. Or... they will kill you as fast as they can so they don't die.
IME it's been 50/50.
If you have team mates also involved they almost always try to disengage and heal. It's when I rush and don't care if I die. My $12k ISK to your 1m ISK drop suit. Works for me... even if there's a good chance I'll still die.
So yeah, I did what you are planning to do. But without some kind of weapon choice in the near future in that build. Prepare to do little more than annoy those in serious gear. |

I gotta say I agree a lot with Lilith. Many ways to go about things, tis why the eve universe is fun. I'm fairly new myself and was being decimated in the first week. Upgrading to a GEK AR and just enhanced shield extenders greatly increased my survivability and K/D ratio. If you get outgunned and don't run, you're still gonna die. Get ambushed by a mob, yep, a new clone awaits. But when you get those one on one engagements being able to drop them as fast as possible is what will save you and pay out more. By all means, be focused when you use your SP, but as they say, the best defense is a strong offense. |

I would skip shield recharge/regulator for now but the decision is clearly dependent upon your fighting style.
Equipment: Definitely Injector if they fix them, otherwise: uplink for faster SP or hive if you live long enough to run out of ammo.
One mistake I did before a respec is to upgrade core skills to try to stay in a lower level suit but I still ran out of pg/cpu and could not run more than one complex shield extender. It is a difficult balancing act between core and drop suit upgrades. If you do spec into SR/AR, you may need to drop your side arm to free up cpu/pg in lower level suits.

This list is devoid of the "basic" armor repair and the "basic" shield rechargers. It should be. The militia to basic move in these categories ONLY saves CPU/PG and does not actually increase the rate in which the shields / armor recharge. The militia gear is the same stats except for being more hoggy CPU/PG wise.
At low level - skip it for now. As the 'raw' increase from a basic shield extender or armor plate vastly outweigh the benefits of ZERO increase in recovery from the milita gear to the basic. (On the recharger / repair)
I forewent the side arm on this build in nearly every fit I built to use an equipment instead. (Keep in mind she is an assault suit. Not a logi.) But you darn bet I'm going to double duty as a logi any way and every way I can until I can get into some better suits and guns. There's a lot of points to be had doing it. And at low levels I'm at a severe disadvantage firepower wise.
I need to get her into a GEK / AR and she should be able to throw down against anything but the most fitted out proto stuff.
Anyway. I thought it was worth doubling this ^^^ guys point. As it is a move that will save you maybe 20-30k SP that you SHOULD be putting into a weapon instead at like level 1 type stuff.

This advanced suit should be fine for quite a while: Caldari Medium Frame C/1-Series14280210 gF42 kW210 HP120 HP321
I spec'ed out skills for 1.06M SP total. In addition to AR and dropsuit, the primary core skills were as follows: * Armor upgrade: 3 (+15%) - Do not upgrade past this for now. * Armoring plating: 1 (basic) - Do not upgrade past this. * Shield upgrade: 3 (+15%) * Shield extension: 3 (enh) - Probably upgrade drop suit before going for complex shield extenders.
Optional skills(If you start running out of cpu/pg as use better weap/equip): * Nanocircuitry: 1 to get away from militia to free up cpu/pg * Armor repair: 1 to get away from militia to free up cpu/pg * Drop suit elec: 1-2 (+5% cpu) when you are tight on cpu for your fit
Basic config (tweak to your style) 3x Enhanced shield extenders 1x Basic armor plate 1x Militia/basic repairer 1x GEK AR or scrambler rifle 1x Locust grenade 1x injector/uplink/hive - Maybe no side arm due to cpu/pg limits
After all of the above, I would spec further into your primary weapon with occasional upgrades into core skills when the SP costs make sense.
Other tips: Don't lone wolf. Always squad up. Find a non-PC corp that has active people during your usual online time.
