Greetings DUST community! New guy here just wanting to voice my suggestion on a topic I've been hearing about. After hearing that we needed to submit a ticket before May 31, 2013 to tech support for a SP Respec, I was thinking about a potential respec mechanic that can be implemented in the future.
I've done some searching on the forums and found some suggestions regarding AUR > Respec and even some suggestions that a respec should be limited to a few numbers in the lifetime of a character. Personally, I don't want to pay real life currency if I'm going to be limited on my options or use of services. However, I do believe that we need to "pay" for a service as a respec. As a result I was considering utilizing the weekly ACTIVE SP as a possible form of "credit" we could use for payment.
Technically speaking, this would be more of a "Substitution" mechanic. Essentially by opting out of our the Active SP we receive every Wednesday after DT, we receive a "memory wipe." Since we're all immortal clones, I don't see why we would not have periodic memory wipes. Here's a bit of flavor text to give an overview of how it can be a plausible concept:
Quote:Memory Wipes We don't necessarily lose our combat experience. We lose our previous misconceptions and fears to approach our experiences from a newer perspective.
This does have a downside. Since we are "re-learning" our skills we will need to re-purchase and re-read our manuals and tech logs (skill books). Also, the memory wipe takes a toll on cognitive functions so learning new things on the field will take longer than usual (no Active SP until the following Wednesday). In the end though, the memory wipe heals the clone's mind from mental inefficiency (poorly allocated SP) and allows them to be a more confident and focused fighter on the field of battle (after focusing their skills in the way they see fit).
Just wanted to put this out there. I'm really curious on what y'all think! |

Personally, I am against this. EvE players do not get it, only on special circumstance, and so neither should we, if we make it that we can take back what we have spec'd into, there are no longer lessons and serious consideration that needs to be put into your skill system to decide what would be best for you and set you up with a better future as a mercenary.
If you made a mistake on your own part, you will know better next time, if CCP makes a mistake, you will get your respec.
Mistakes do not go unpunished in New Eden. |

One of the better ideas behind a respec, I tip my hat to you. As for the previous comment, I'm sorry but you're wrong. This game needs some kind of respec feature otherwise it is doomed to failure. The way EVE works means that you don't need a respec ever, as you can realise during the training of that skill that it isn't what you want.
I'll say this only once more:
With the way the current levelling system works, we need a respec system.
What happens when the next build goes live and we have new gear, weapons and all kinds of goodies? We can't grind for them and get them at our own speed because of how the current system works.
Please also note that I agree 100% that we should have no respec ever if the SP system were identical to that of EVE. |

The problem is that the game is still quite unfinished. This isn't a case of "oh, well the Ravager LAV's aren't going to be in the game until 2014", this is a case of "The Caldari/Minmatar/Gallente Sentinel does not exist" but we know that it is just around the corner. Should dedicated Sentinel players be forced to go Amarr or wait? Example: your corporation needs Sentinels for Planetary Conquest. Your Heavies don't want to be an Amarr Heavy because they are not Amarr themselves. This means their either go Amarr despite what they want to do or they go rockin' Militia in PC. Both options are what one would call "lackluster."
I believe there needs to be a respec or a refunding of certain skill once everything that should be in the game is released (so every race being represented with a suit type). For stuff tacked on later, stuff that isn't even a twinkle in daddy's eye, I say no to a refund. The game is just so unfinished/patchwork right now it would make the Minmatar utterly proud. Functional but patchwork. |

We need some kind of function that allows us to work within the parameters of the current system or change the system entirely.
EVE is great with having no respecs because you can stop training something at any time if it's a bad decision or you change your mind but you can not do that in Dust. This is the problem. |

My ONLY position on periodic respecing is this:
No.
A respec will be, in my opinion, a one last, final deal once all of the currently planned equipment is put into the game, most specifically the dropsuits. I won't mind one respec at that point so people who are in Amarr Heavy or Gallente Scout can respec into what they really wanted (Minmatar Heavy, Caldari scout, whatever) because they are more or less forced into a separate race's dropsuit right now to get the feel of and practice their role.
After that, no.
No annual respec, no weekly respec, no monthly respec, no. Just no. |

I think periodic respecs should be an option until all the base suits/vehicles are added and CCP quits making large balance changes that break things.
Not saying that balance changes aren't needed, that's what Betas are for (and this is still Beta, regardless of what the official designation is). But they tend to break things when they "adjust" them.
Once the above processes are completed, remove the option. |

Once the above processes are completed, remove the option. More specifically the balance issues, you shouldn't be able to spec into something that can be broken in an instant. The laser rifle in Chromosone was unbelievably overpowered so they nerfed it into uselessness, and now anybody who specs into laser rifles gets the sharp end of a stick to the face. That is why respecs are needed. |
