I don't know why people get so concerned about the reviews. Anyone who doesn't do more research than just taking the first review they see at face value is an idiot anyway.
And no, I'm not saying that things are perfect or that we don't need improvements. |

In all fairness, in its current state it takes a lot to love Dust. controls are awkward (it can take several attempts for us logis to select right equipment on a DS3), its riddled with bugs and 90% the eventual content isn't even in game. in that sense it only deserves 50-60% at most. the ability to see its potential it what makes scores creep up to 80-90% scores. In time on future gen consoles it will grow and thrive with any luck, people need to give it a chance, learn to understand the depth. Something your average FPS console gamer doesn't give two hoots about, they wanna get in, kill stuff and unlock the new shiny shiny to kill more stuff with. it will take a lot to move the console crowd over to the 'thinking mans fps' but eventually it will happen

Euro Gamer and Hardcore Gamer seem to be the only ones that got it right. The potential is there, but current core gameplay issues are holding it back. |

It looks about the same graphically as any other up to date fps but it feels so clunky. The fact that it's about a week from release and I already feel burnt out. Bashing my head against those who got to keep all the money and skill points from beta. When does that normally happen?
Knowing the maps, weapons and armour should have been advantage enough. Now some of you brag to have upward of 200 million Isk and a few milion in skill points.
After reading the reviews before the game was released I expected a lot more than another bog standard fps with pay to win and preferential treatment to beta testers.
This seems obvious. They needed to retain some kind of player base, create a fanboy class that would stay after investing a lot of their time and energy into a game that should not have been released. If they would have zeroed out the accounts fewer people would have stayed.

I'm not so sure the "thinking mans fps" really applies here. More like keep an account for along time to accumulate SP. Not a whole lot of thinking there.
As a long time (really long time) gamer in both the MMORPG and console FPS worlds, I was really excited for Dust. I had hoped it would be a thinking mans fps. There is hope and potential, but that is all. I want to like it and I am completely ok with grinding away and paying my dues, but as it sits I find that I'm not inspired to log in. I shouldn't have to talk myself into playing this game, I should have to talk myself into stopping. |

It's a poor game.
The game is dated already and they haven't even implemented the basic fundamentals of a shooter or even all the suits yet.
It was very egotistical and a massive mistake to release this early.
This needed another year in beta minimum.
You release a poor game you should expect poor reviews and unfortunately those reviews will stay with this game no matter how much better it gets because they released early. |

Delirium Inferno wrote: Think about what beta really meant in Dust 514. And think about what release means for Dust 514. They are just words.
It does not matter what "beta" means for Dust, the word "Beta" and "Release" have a general accepted and somewhat consistent meaning within video games, for quite some time. U cant just redefine the meaning of a word to suite your needs, in general most people assoscitate "beta" for a game, with being in a unfinished state with bugs and missing content. So if u proclaim "release or Gold master" most people would expect a "finished" or feature complete product, without major bugs or problems. There is ofc a grey area which gets abused all the time and we can discuss if Dust simply abused the term "Release" like many other company's. No matter what, the fact that Dust plays and feels like a beta still remains, so its dishonest to openly proclaim "Release" status using several news channels to the public.
Take as example Firefall, which is probably in the same game state as Dust, yet they still keep the "Beta" word around and will do so until they really think calling it "Release" is fair. I find the Firefall approach much more honest to the potential customer base.
The "blame" is probably not even at CCP/DUST dev team, but some contractual commitments CCP have to Sony to finish Dust in a given timeframe or they have to pay compensations or get its development budget cut. So i can understand the pressure any game developer has to get a "release" out, since from this point on u still can fix things, while u did "fulfill" your contractual obligations to your publisher. Also like already noted, getting a Beta out as "Release" more often hurts the game than it helps, since the customer quickly notice the quality and state a game is in, by simply comparing it to other games or promised feature trailers and get borred or disapointed really quick. |

The Beta tag had to be officially removed for various contractual reasons despite the game will always be in a beta like state. While I would have liked to seen more development done before 'release' was made at least CCP is smart by not advertising the hell out of it yet. |

yeah, was also my guess. The problem remains that associated with a press release and "Release" game, ofc most gaming press will start to review the "unfinished" product, by also comparing it to all the polished "finished" products. There is no current form of "fair" press review that will account for a "rolling" Beta->Finished Product process. Thats why unfortunately all the rather negative review scores will stick with Dust, since most wont take the time to re-review a game at a later state. |

Please stop this.
didnt you get the memo. 'Its a beta' is no longer a viable excuse. That was all that was thrown back at people when they commented on poor mechanics etc in the beta. it was bad argument then. It fails completely now.
"always in beta like state":
Expansion packs are not 'betas' they are expansions/ add-ons to a released game.
(P.S. Eve had an official release date) |

Eve also has http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/eve-online a score that will likely never change becuase it was release so long ago and was that horrible back then. |

Nah not really or did this suddenly change? Adrenaline Vault score 70: Quote:You must have patience and be excited about non-structured gameplay in order for it to be worth the price of admission
EvE would be scored somehwta similar as it was back than, nothing fundamental did change and game reviews still don't score based on a niche audience and gameplay. Most game magazines rating systems and processes are tailored to review the average blockbuster game, but not some exotic game, that falls out of there "Normal" spectrum. |

The score has been that for Eve for as long as I can remember. MMOs don't get second chances on metacritic which is why I think some games are now pressing to get 'expansions' individually rated instead. As for the statement that it is not your average game I can agree with at times. There are some really awesome games but because they're.... awkward they're not popular with mainstream but in their own right are still good games.
Even then most review sites won't bother 're-reviewing' an mmo. |
