I don't want this to sound how it ultimately will, because I genuinely like CCP. The company shares its direction, and its Devs are active and engaging with the community. I know Dust was a huge undertaking for them. That being said, here goes:
I'm really hoping someone can help me to like Dust. I'm having many problems with it. It doesn't feel like other FPSs that I've played before--the kills are hollow feeling and most of the time it seems like I'm just getting mowed down by people using prototype weapons from some far off point I don't even see. And when I am getting shot, by the time I can turn to see who's shooting at me, I'm likely dead already. Stylistically, the character movement looks wooden, and the graphics overall look terrible--I mean they look terrible and I'm playing through HDMI in HD. Explosions, gunfire, ship and vehicle movement look like a game that was released 5 years ago--definitely not end-life PS3 graphics.
I really want to like it, though. I think the Eve universe is rich, but Dust to me just feels like a crappy FPS I get for free with the purchase of 10 boxes of cereal. Poor controls, shoddy graphics (having played some in Chromosome and now in Uprising builds), wooden character movement, horrible vehicle handling, confusing skill set with having to commit to something before you even know if you'll like it--it's too much. I mean, I know the militia gear is there, but why isn't all gear--every single type--represented? Why do I have to spend precious sp and isk in skillbooks and training for things (say, heavy weapons/suits) before I even know if I'll like it??
I don't want to invest sp into things that I'll regret, and it doesn't really feel like I can "try out" weapons before committing to them. One of the biggest problems I'm having (vs other fps games) is that its really difficult to swap back and forth between roles, since I can't fit up several drop suits for various roles unless I "specialize" in some, which means that I'll do one thing well and the rest ******. You know what, though? Sometimes I like to be the medic, and sometimes I like to do the shooting. But Dust seems to tell me "no" to this. "You gotta pick what u want to do." Well, too bad. I like to do both. If there's a medic that's needed, I'll happily oblige, but if there's too many medics, maybe I'll snipe, etc. Dust doesn't like this.
What Dust should really have--and a skill I'd certainly be willing to use sp and isk for--is the ability to "clone jump" in between a differently skilled clone, with a cooldown, of course. That way, if I wanted to play a medic, then I could "clone jump" into a clone that's skilled for Logi and be a logi for that hour, two hours, etc., and then when I want to play a sentinel, then I could jump into the sentinel clone. Otherwise, it just feels too restrictive to have to specialize into a role, especially considering that you can't effectively "try it out before purchasing." Why does the standard-fit "combat medic" fit not have a repair tool? Why are there no laser rifles/plasma cannons/etc. sold in militia gear? No heavy weapon/suits either? I mean, if the goal is to shoehorn everyone into an assault role by limiting the militia options (including the default suit fittings) to assualt-only, then job well done. But you're going to lose a lot of players who want variety.
And that's sad, because I really want to like it. |

Im in a similar boat buddy, i love the concept of this game and what it might evolve into, but thats about the only thing keeping me here. This game as well as CCPs ways of handling things is getting real old real fast. All i hear is a bunch of empty promises.
If that doesn't change soon, come release day for a good competitive fps or GTA V I'm gone for good.
We cant be the only ones feeling this way i'm sure. |

I agree. After playing this game for 2 nights in a row for about 5 hours a night this game is bad. This game is way too bad in soo many ways to get people hooked enough to want to progress down the skill tree and invest the time. |

Patience. These things won't come over night. I personally consider this in beta still. I probably won't change that feeling until the gun game is ironed out, vehicles of all types (std adv proto) are all represented and all racial suit variants are in play.
I'm not holding my breath here, but I'm patient enough to wait. |

I'm not holding my breath here, but I'm patient enough to wait. This is true - but with Uprising, practically all the sensible feedback from the beta testing period was thrown out the window and we suddenly have the TAR and a bunch of useless weapons. |

But its not a beta though, they actually released this game at its current state, what does that tell you about ccp as a game company? |

The best way to like Dust , or "Dusht" as it is pronounced in the native Icelandic tongue, is to revel in the potential it has, ignore the huge flaws, and suck up to CPMs ideas for racial suit place holders that will take away resources from the improvements to the core game, or be a middle management douchebag and pretend you are the head of a vast corporate empire by calling 6 hour long meetings to buff the helmet on your e-peen laying out a five year plan for dominance on a game that wont last two. |

We going to get some kind of weapon lab eventually, so you can try guns before you buy them, no idea when that's coming though, knowing CCP it'll be a while. As for the whole specialization thing it's the main point of the game, you have to pick a role and skill into it, till your either happy with we're you are or are maxed out, then spec another role. And most of the stuff you can use is versatile, in can be used in a variety of roles. The AR can be used effectively no matter whether your a grunt or a support unit, and most of the skills particularly the core ones apply to all your fittings.
This game rewards time spent in a role, and if you want to be able to switch roles you have to put the time into both to be able to use them. If you don't want to put that time in, we'll throw together a militia variant of whatever you want to do and use that. |

Yeah... most of it. They fixed Nova Knives (as anyone who's played against me recently is too well aware). = )
Most of the vehicle/weapon balancing (ya know, the important stuff) was just completely ignored though.
Read something recently that suggested CCP had this build a while back and was only tweaking technical stuff (framerate, etc..) and they haven't actually re-balanced the weapons yet.
One can hope. = / |

I'm not holding my breath here, but I'm patient enough to wait. I think more of the issues could be excused if it was actually still in beta. As it is not, and was released (with much fanfare by CCP at Fanfest) on 5/14, I can't just ignore that this was their "launch"-ready product. Someone over there felt like this was "it." "It" enough to launch. AAA. It's not only disheartening to see that this was a launch-ready candidate release but that the glaring issues and wooden gameplay felt good enough to the Dev team that they went forward with it. What's more, they had years and years in development. What have they been doing? I know Rome wasn't built in a day, but they at least knew enough to not say "behold the greatness of Rome" when it was still just a village. |

There are two (three) basic roles you can start with that are semi risk free and require very little skillpoint investiment.
1. Medium Frame with Swarm launcher.
Tactics: find a hidey hole with a good view of the Control points and the main battle area while hiding from the enemy red line (snipers be there). Wait until you see enemy LAVs and tanks, and shoot. Its doesn't matter if you don't get kills, you get awarded some SP just for doing damage. There is distinct lack of AV players in the game in general and your presense will be enough to make all but the leetest tanks think twice.
2. The Light/Medium Frame Sniper.
Tactics. Hang back for about 5 minutes. Watch the kill spam. Your not gunning for regular guys, your looking for other snipers because they sit still and are easier targets. This role is much more risky.
3. Bonus Role: Heavy Defender.
Tactics: Spec HMG and Heavy Suit. Wait a bit after the battle starts go to a blue captured objective and camp it. Every so often a lone scout or assault guy will chance his arm. Kill him. If your attacked by a squad, try to retreat, they will kill you. This one is one isn't a big SP investiment if you use miltia gear.
You wont be in the heat of the action, but you wont die so much as to be discouraged. Other "low risk" roles might be spamming drop uplinks in a stealthy scout suit. Spamming nanohives. Or simply speccing up a medium frame and assualt rifle and following the zerg horde.
Be aware though, you are going to die and sometimes it wont seem fair. |
