I don't want this to sound how it ultimately will, because I genuinely like CCP. The company shares its direction, and its Devs are active and engaging with the community. I know Dust was a huge undertaking for them. That being said, here goes:
I'm really hoping someone can help me to like Dust. I'm having many problems with it. It doesn't feel like other FPSs that I've played before--the kills are hollow feeling and most of the time it seems like I'm just getting mowed down by people using prototype weapons from some far off point I don't even see. And when I am getting shot, by the time I can turn to see who's shooting at me, I'm likely dead already. Stylistically, the character movement looks wooden, and the graphics overall look terrible--I mean they look terrible and I'm playing through HDMI in HD. Explosions, gunfire, ship and vehicle movement look like a game that was released 5 years ago--definitely not end-life PS3 graphics.
I really want to like it, though. I think the Eve universe is rich, but Dust to me just feels like a crappy FPS I get for free with the purchase of 10 boxes of cereal. Poor controls, shoddy graphics (having played some in Chromosome and now in Uprising builds), wooden character movement, horrible vehicle handling, confusing skill set with having to commit to something before you even know if you'll like it--it's too much. I mean, I know the militia gear is there, but why isn't all gear--every single type--represented? Why do I have to spend precious sp and isk in skillbooks and training for things (say, heavy weapons/suits) before I even know if I'll like it??
I don't want to invest sp into things that I'll regret, and it doesn't really feel like I can "try out" weapons before committing to them. One of the biggest problems I'm having (vs other fps games) is that its really difficult to swap back and forth between roles, since I can't fit up several drop suits for various roles unless I "specialize" in some, which means that I'll do one thing well and the rest ******. You know what, though? Sometimes I like to be the medic, and sometimes I like to do the shooting. But Dust seems to tell me "no" to this. "You gotta pick what u want to do." Well, too bad. I like to do both. If there's a medic that's needed, I'll happily oblige, but if there's too many medics, maybe I'll snipe, etc. Dust doesn't like this.
What Dust should really have--and a skill I'd certainly be willing to use sp and isk for--is the ability to "clone jump" in between a differently skilled clone, with a cooldown, of course. That way, if I wanted to play a medic, then I could "clone jump" into a clone that's skilled for Logi and be a logi for that hour, two hours, etc., and then when I want to play a sentinel, then I could jump into the sentinel clone. Otherwise, it just feels too restrictive to have to specialize into a role, especially considering that you can't effectively "try it out before purchasing." Why does the standard-fit "combat medic" fit not have a repair tool? Why are there no laser rifles/plasma cannons/etc. sold in militia gear? No heavy weapon/suits either? I mean, if the goal is to shoehorn everyone into an assault role by limiting the militia options (including the default suit fittings) to assualt-only, then job well done. But you're going to lose a lot of players who want variety.
And that's sad, because I really want to like it. |

I'm not holding my breath here, but I'm patient enough to wait. I think more of the issues could be excused if it was actually still in beta. As it is not, and was released (with much fanfare by CCP at Fanfest) on 5/14, I can't just ignore that this was their "launch"-ready product. Someone over there felt like this was "it." "It" enough to launch. AAA. It's not only disheartening to see that this was a launch-ready candidate release but that the glaring issues and wooden gameplay felt good enough to the Dev team that they went forward with it. What's more, they had years and years in development. What have they been doing? I know Rome wasn't built in a day, but they at least knew enough to not say "behold the greatness of Rome" when it was still just a village. |

No one can help you if you don-¦t like it. Why are you there when it feels like crap for you?
I-¦m really sick of these kitten topics.
Goodbye from New Eden. I'm sorry you fail at reading comprehension. I see you have douchbaggery trained to V, though.
