I know, I know. Another dropship QQ thread but it is true.
We get no rewards (CCP said that they are working it but god knows when will it come to us), we get destroyed quickly, militia forge guns, Railgun installations now have a godly range that can now shoot you at your spawn base, we didn't get any buff and all AV weapons got a 10% buff too making the dropship weaker.
I tried so hard to not rage whenever my 800K ISK ship can get shot down by a a (almost free) and low level forge gun. I have no grudges against higher tier forge guns since people actually wasted skill points in them to be actually good rather than a 1k 0 meta level forge gun. It was a horrible ide to bring it to the game. But now that we have the plasma cannon why not replace it with that?
The Railgun installations are no fun either. Almost (every time) I go to my spawn area to get repairs done to my armor (I fly Gallente dropships) I get pined down by one located near the enemy's redline or a little bit closer to the action. And since Railgun installations are hybrid they do 100% damage to both shields and armor. I can try to activate armor hardeners and repairers but the moment they kick in I am already eating ground. Why increase the range of the railgun installation and most importantly why increase the AI's tracking range? The moment they lock-on on you, you, must either try to elevate (which if you don't fly a assault dropship you'll take way more time elevating) or try to evade it and since the AI almost never misses you know you are f*cked and quickly need to find a safe place to land and call it back.
No problems with the blaster or missile ones.
Also their price is increadibly high as all of you know. Paying half a million or more ISK to fly a ship that has little difference from it's militia variant? Even free LAVs have more resistance and are more rewarding then a half a million ISK ship.
As of now the only usefulness they have is: -Call it when battle starts -Drop squad mates at a location -Recall dropship before everyone zeroes in on you -Repeat
That's the only way I see dropships being used in battle. I rarely see one last the whole match or just 10 minutes. Dropships are a flying coffin. Even the good pilots admit it. I like receiving compliments about being a good dropship pilot and all but those compliments won't restock them (sorry if I sounded harsh there :/) But it's true. Since Uprisingaunched I have waisted 3million SP in them and more than 20 million ISK restocking them.
When the respec comes again I won't doubt that there will be even fewer pilots. I know I won't waist a skill in them. I'll just save them for the jet fighters which I am hoping that they won't be as horrible as the dropship.
Now I'll be finally getting Proto gear and be good at it. Maybe get an HAV or Logi LAV.
It was fun flying them while it lasted. This is one pilot signing out of dropship duty.

Yup. I gave up hope that CCP would demonstrate giving a poop about DS after we still didn't get the price increase from patch notes in UPRISING.
I mean, if it takes them that long to realize a problem, they talk about it for a few months and promise change. Then supposedly patch it in...but still don't patch it in. And then weeks later after more patches still haven't edited a value in a database for us.
I can only conclude it's intentional neglect.
Next you'll wait a year for them to mention fixing some of the bugs listed Here. Then they'll say it's coming in a few months. Then they'll add it to patch notes. But it won't actually be in the patch and maybe a year or two later they'll get around to them. lol.
Not worth it. |

Its an acquired taste. You definitely need some buddies who will work with you closely to make it effective.
I have been flying Dropships since the early Chromosome Beta (when it when p givublic), and have been working Dropship operations for a while. There are definite issues with WP accrual that need some addressing, but if you fit them well, and know how to react to different types of AV, you won't get owned easily. With the addition of the assault-class dropships, I am even harder to hit with rockets, forge guns, and tanks.
Does this make me invincible? No, but the additional maneuverability can get me in and out of situation faster than most AV can hit me for fatal. It sounds as if you are flying militia-standard grade dropships. Yes, they handle that way because they are not high-tiered and with lower engine power, they fly "Slower" due to armor upgrades. The Logistics is a bit worse on speed due to both armor and the mCRU attached.
If you are going to fly Dropships, you need to have patience. It is not the most rewarding job for WP (unless you are my turret, who often places in the top 5), but you are versatile and as long as you keep working on tanking your fit correctly, you will do well.
Also, small rocket turrets. The other two are jokes.

Also, you are doing it wrong if a militia forge gun is taking you out. Just saying. May need to build you ship to be sturdier or quicker on its toes. You know, those speed boosters are quite useful... |

Gave them up some time ago. It's going to suck for the future newberries who enter this game for the pilots dream. Grind and die in militia suits (trashing the KDR) only to find there is no current place for them. Then continually be told it will be "the next game build" that maps will be bigger or they'll get proper WP awards.
After the golden age for Dropships I gave Dust 514 several more game builds to get it right before giving up. It will happen someday when game development comes around to it. I just don't think that time is anytime soon. |

Don't give up on the craft. It is sad seeing so many incompetent Aerial pilots nowadays... so easy to crush... I just had to log in to counter the Assault drop ship argument. I used DS on chromosome, and I can say with certainty that Assault DS has old style handling and the others were nerfed to make it look better than it really is.
I'd like to see you get hit by a Proto breach with proficiency. Let's see how your reactions to different types of AV work there. (Hint: Not a thing, no amount of drop ship tank allows you to survive a second shot.) |

Missile Installations can be a problem too. Either the AI bugged and stayed locked on me the entire game, or someone wasted the entire game sitting in one shooting at me...
But the thing reached from behind the enemy redline, all the way across to the map to under my MCC. The range is disgusting. I was limited to areas of the map that had a large building obstructing the view between me and the installation.
Rail installations are the same, except you die if they hit you more than once. |

I remember last build seeing a dropship on its side.
Being the good person that I am I decided to give it a little bump to knock it back over.
Going at probably 0.000001 M/Ph I gave it a little bump in my tank, and it explodes
I just drove off whistling casually, what made me think speccing into DSes after that little scene was a good idea I do not know. |

Well, in real life rail guns would be ******* INSANE range wise. I remember somebody posting the actual mathematics of the gun and it made me do a double take.
Try playing EVE, the railguns in space are much much harder to use. They practically miss 100% of the time if not trained properly. |

When you fly a dropship
1.) Realize that it is not Top Gun, you in a ship, not a jet, more correctly youGÇÖre a brick with thrust. 2.) You must have patience: a lot of your job is SUPPORT! Unfortunately a drop ship is not always needed in every battle or at every moment. Use this time to practice flying in safety zones. 3.) The more you learn how to support your team the more often they will call to use you. a. Example: if you perform a GÇ£touch and goGÇ¥ in a fire fight that your team is losing , you could save lives by blocking fire or absorbing fire, you could assist in an extraction , chances are, if your good you can land and get out without taking much damage. This doesnGÇÖt work all the time but its good support. Douvolle and TACs usually are the biggest problem. 4.) Situational Awareness!!!! If you donGÇÖt have this, you need it. Those little orange triangles in the peripheral of your HUD let you know that there is something there. Learn to be aware! You can hear swarms before they come (eh 45% of the time) so get moving . Just because your POV is like looking through a straw hole does not mean your HUD or radar isnGÇÖt working , you should be using those! a. If you have a gunner and heGÇÖs shooting a target, look at the direction of his turret and figure out how you can best help aim. 5.) Your concern about installations, my advice is fly your ship in an Ambush, no installations there buddy. 6.) So you want to do offensive with a drop ship. Spec shields on gallente and armor on Myron doesnGÇÖt matter really, most cases you get a one hit warning, meaning you get hit and you need to leave. I do not think that DS need a buff; I think that this is a skill that is very user dependent. a. Have at least one gunner who is a dedicated gunner, pilot , or tanker because you can stack damage bonus and these people will under the mechanics of communication b. ALWAYS PLAY with people who have micGÇÖs c. If your directly over a tank, HE CANT HIT YOU ! Same for turrets. ! 7.) Always know your safety zones! Only thing that can hurt you in the safety zone is yourself! 8.) Always stay moving, unless your 100% sure you can not move, if your ever 100% that you can hover, you should still keep moving 9.) Chances are if youGÇÖre a flying everyone who says GÇ£ drop ships suck GÇ£ and are using your turrets are going to become GÇ£5 second GÇ£ experts in Dropships and want to tell you how to fly. Ignore these people itGÇÖs your ship. People are going to yell and name call because GÇ£they almost had a kill but you pulled out to avoid being destroyed by a swarm.GÇ¥ Point out to them that they went 8 and 0 for a K/D spread, had you not pulled out it would have been 8/1 at best 9/1. I think 8 and 0 is a lot better of a K/D, point this out to they and continue on your way. |
