I just started playing this game and already Im bored. From what I am reading, there is a lot more beyond these quick little battles I am playing. How long does it take to get beyond this?
I currently have almost 570k SP, 9k WP and a 4.5 KDR. Im guessing that will fall considering how much of a grind it is to get to the next level of anything.
Also, do we get to change our skills after we graduate the Academy? I started off as a trooper with an assault rifle but, after playing for a little bit, I am really liking using the installations (railgun mostly). I can go 21-1 with those so I am thinking about tanking.

Unless you go in with a squad of fairly good people, there is a large chance you'll get stomped so hard you'll wish you could go back to the academy.
You don't get to change your skills after you graduate though to answer your question. |

Like the other posters are saying though, you may want to look into joining a player-Corp after you get out, or rolling with people in the LFSquad channel. It gets pretty brutal when you're on your own. |

Thanks guys. I kinda figured but I would rather play against good competition and lower my KDR than play Duck Hunt as it is right now. I am assuming the regular players are a little smarter than the guys who are running at my installation head on after I already dropped 2 of their mates.
That sucks about now being able to change skills. I really like railguns right now and I just looked at the skill tree for tanks. This is going to be painful

LFSquad channel?
What are the advantages of a player-corp? Is it anything like a clan on other FPS games?

That might be a good idea though. A respec upon graduation.
Funny though, I also went in with a brand new alt, graduated in 10 games. Would have been less if not for having to do ambushes also.
Would be interesting to know how many games your on right now.

I just started today as I got a link from a friend who said it would give me a skill booster and a gun for joining. Ive probably played about 14-15 games so far. Its been half and half between the death match and objective capture.
Right now I have 135 kills and 30 deaths but most of the deaths came in the first couple games.

Will do. Though I dont think its 10k Lifetime WP. I am now at 10,485 and am still apparently in the Academy.
I did try out the militia Tanks. Less kills but no deaths.

Not normally they think that going sniping is a 'safer' option. this is when we get ninjas to counter deploy against them, nothing but a bunch of free kills when they go sniper usually. |

A lot of people revert to sniping when they're getting stomped. In psychological terms you could relate this one going into the fetal position, sucking ones thumb obsessively, whilst mumbling gibberish to one's self. |

First Ambush
Went 5-4 and 4th on the board.
There were cars everywhere on the board and one hit me before I even had a chance to materialize after spawning in which seems kind of ********.
EDIT - Except for the run-over, 3 of my deaths were from being 2-shotted from a football field away and one was a one shot from a 'forge gun' that seemed to come from nowhere.
Im sticking with my original hypothesis that everyone snipes. |

So, my initial thoughts on day one.
Academy - Good start out to get you used to the mechanics of the game. Its definitely skill versus skill as everyone seems to have the same set of equipment (or at least the same level of equipment).
Out of Academy - It quickly becomes gear versus skill at this point. Tactics can help you stay positive but even if you get the drop on someone and hit them in the back of the head a couple times with a basic assault rifle, if they have enough gear they can just turn on you and two shot your paper armor. From talking with a couple people in-game, it seems that it will be a couple million SP (1-2 months without having to pay) before I have the gear/skills to be able to hang with the guys who have been here for months. While I am still going to keep going for a bit, this is not exactly enjoyable for someone new to the game who has no choice but to go against the long-timers.
While Im not one to complain, I do find it odd that someone can just hide behind gear even if someone who is new gains the tactical advantage.
There should be the ability to redo your skills once you get out of the Academy. I found out towards the end that I liked tanks/installations. However, once I got into the 'real world' the tank is nothing more than a rolling coffin.
All in all, its a somewhat fun game but there almost needs to be one more level above the academy. You get to play all of the maps/modes but against guys that are somewhat closer to you as far as gear. Ive heard that this is a hybrid between a RPG and a FPS. In most PVP RPG type games, you have missions/opponents that lower level guys can actually accomplish something and as you level up, they become harder but the rewards are better. In the other FPS games I have played, you can do pretty well as a new guy if you have skill and know tactics versus guys who have been playing for a while.
Its seems to me that this is missing the basics of the two. It could be either/or but it just needs something. Either a place for new guys to level up against people that are roughly on the same level or for tactics to matter against someone with better gear (most of my kills were headshots that were not face-to-face and that didnt seem to matter all that much).
As with most FPS boards, I know the inevitable 'get gud scrub' is going to materialize soon. Like I said earlier, I can get a rough 4-5 KDR against people in similar gear so its not a matter of skill. |

As an omni-soldier my skill points are extremly spread out and net resulted in me being well, I am effectivly stuck in militia gear for probably another 2 million skill points.
I can safely say that the player's own skill does take into a large account of their ability to kill and survive. Earlier today in my militia fit I managed to down a squad and a half and break the opponent's line by forcing them to send a third squad after me. That's when I went john rambo because I was entirely out of ammo and beat one more person to death before the rest of my team came in and drove the wedge though the entire formation they had.
To get good real quick though is to NOT do what I have done spreading self thin. Instead find a niche you can work most comfortably with and focus on that in both skills and gear. You will be in prototype gear quickly enough getting the gear you need faster, and being able to support it all. Read though the entire skill tree and market, look for items that could or could not work for you game style, use militia gear to preview everything. See how other people use the items as well. Rinse repeate.
Currently there are places where the highest end players go grind their axes.
its called faction warfare and Planetary Conquest.
Faction Warfare can be equated to what planetside has, Red Vs Blue vs Green vs Gold, the matches are NPC generated and funded and some players are more passionate for which side they fight on and will bring their best to help sway the war.
Then there is Planetary Conquest. Unlike Planetside's conquering, the difference is it your flag, you designed, you named it, you planted it and now you have to defend it. Because everyone else wants nothing more than to see all of your flags burned. |

IMO implementing an equipment based match making system would make this game more conducive to keeping new players.
Those with tons of SP and pro equipment will say "HTFU!".
IMO they need to HTFU and not be afraid to face folks at their proto level, instead of pub stomp newberries.
man that'd be really nice. maybe a group could que in based off of SP level of the highest squad member. |

This isn't directed specifically at you BTW... just an observation. The 'new' guys suck. Trade accounts with them (figuratively) and you'll be using their 500K characters and they can have all the proto options.
You're STILL gonna wipe the floor with them, especially in a squad of people (also in the same militia fits) who know what they're doing also. This is an effect of playing the same game every night (or so) for 10+ months straight. A lot of these guys don't even know the maps... let alone the effective ranges of certain weapons, or which ones do more damage to shields/armor.
Even a full skill reset for everyone (something I do NOT want) would make no difference. The same small group of players (of which I'd like to think I am a part) would 'dominate'... not because of gear or skill points but rather because of in game experience.
On the upper levels of play.... certainly gear makes a difference. A militia fit is mathematically inferior to proto gear. That's the point. However... that's assuming all other things are equal. In this case they aren't. New players in proto gear STILL won't know what's going on. It'll just take guys like us a few more seconds (and bullets) to stomp them into the dirt.
Try it. All of you. Next time you're about to ROLF STOMP some newbies in a pub match... switch to milita gear. I promise, you won't even notice the difference. |

I have proto dropsuit and weaponry and I've switched to playing STD assault dropsuit with advanced weaponry so at least newbies have a chance. I think it's more challenging and fun. I especially enjoy taking down full logi & assault proto using tac. rifle when I'm using STD dropsuit & ISK GEK.
But ultimately, yeah, my fitting doesn't matter. Newbies are still getting destroyed for the most part. |

Don't lie to the new guy.
PC happens once a day for about, what, 30 corps out of the hundreds that we have in Dust? And only 16 players out of that corp get to play that one single match.
And FW has what, 3 matches going on at a time, if that? To serve the several thousands logged in to play?
No, what tryhard corps do is they squad up and stomp pubbies in regular ambush/skirmish/domination for 99% of the time.
And you're a CPM? Get your act together. |
