Hi all.
I'm new to Dust, started 2 days ago. I knocked about in a few games early in the beta but stopped playing. Picked it up again at the weekend and am having more fun.
I'm really out to try and get a good basic handle (D-UNI corp, not really had much to do with the corp side of things but seemed a good place to start) on the game and it's mechanics but I read so much conflicting info that I felt I need to come here. My main gripe is SP's as spending these is kinda final. ISK can always be earned again but SP's are much harder to come by.
I'm trying to build a good foundation for my character as I'm undecided where I'm going role wise at the mo (Assault probably). I read first of all to get basics such as Dropsuit Command and Weapony to V so jumped in and started spending. I now have DC to V and Weaponry to III, on the way to IV but I'm doubting if this is best as it costs so much SP. Am I wasting time focusing on these so narrowly?
Also, when is a good time to start spending ISK. All I have bought is Skill Books so far and all the shiny dropsuits, modules and AR's look so tempting but will what's available to me now be worth the spend?
I know I've waffled but any help/opinion would be appreciated.

I'm sorry to tell you, but you spent skill points into things that were a priority back during beta but not anymore. Dropsuit command used to have 5% profile signature reduction per level, now it does nothing other than unlocking suits (medium at Lv 1, light at Lv 2, and heavy at Lv 3. Nothing past that at the moment). Similarly, Weaponry used to be 2% weapon damage per level, now it does nothing other than unlocking what weapons you can use.
I'd say hurry and and go to Dust514.com, sign in, go to support and submit a ticket. Label it "Skill Respec" and say you are doing it for the upcoming skill tree change (even though you're not, but nobody needs to know that )
Now for actual skills. Don't spend a single skill point until playing with the starter fits you got for awhile. Try out new roles. If you go to the market place there is a section called "Militia." Militia gear requires no skills to use, so it is a good place to start to test out various roles and decide what you want to do.
Once you're done with that, start spending skill points. Pick which racial suit you want and get it to Level 1. Note that it is advised that you look ahead and see where that skill tree leads, and what bonuses the specialized suits get (simply press Triangle on a skill to read it's description). Go to the weaponry skill tree and get your preferred weapon to Level 1. Go to the modules and get some the ones you liked to level 1 as well (make sure you pay attention to whether they are high slots or low slots and know how many your suit can hold). And again with a piece of equipment. Then start playing with this suit until you feel comfortable with where you are at and can remain profitable.
At that point, start leveling everything up. Be sure to level things up generally consistently with eachother, but don't be afraid to get one a bit ahead of another. If at any point you start to run low on your CPU or PG space, spend some skill points into the Electronics and Engineering skills, respectively, in the Dropsuit Upgrades skill tree.
And really that's all there is too it. May look like a good bit of text but it's really not that complicated once you get the hang of it. Good luck with your character!
EDIT: On another note, there are also two skills called Armor Upgrades and Shield Upgrades. These both do 5% increase to their respective attribute. Some people will tell you to get these to Level 5 ASAP, but I urge otherwise. They are nice bonuses, but the skill points can be better spent for a new player. Come back to these later once you got yourself set up well. |

I wish I could tell the difference between new and old (beta) guides. I've submitted the ticket on Dust514.com and got an automated reply concerning being in a queue for SP Re-spec and it being completed in the "coming days". Does anybody know roughly how long this takes?

Thanks again. The skill tree change is coming on Wednesday, so I'd say we'll either get respec'd then or within the week.
Also keep in mind that Dust is planned for at least 10 years of support. Don't feel like you're wasting your time if you plan ahead. Zarr has this lovely Google Doc that I use to plan ahead, https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AvLiNbrqwUaSdG9kZkRvajdscUNSc1RndWpPR2RPaUE#gid=0 Though you'd have to change the skill multiplier on basic frame suits (Light, Medium, Heavy) to 4x instead of 6x and the specialized roles from 10x to 8x. This is actually what the upcoming skill tree change on Wednesday is and why everyone has the option to get a respec.
I was hesitant on posting that in my original response because I know EVE has this thing going around where people refer to it as "Spreadsheets in space." Dust isn't quite like that at all, but there are a ton of skills you can go into and something like this helps me at least manage it all. Yeah it's a bit more effort than what you'd have to do in Call of Duty or Battlefield, but Dust 514 has a much larger meta-game scope than either of those and is planned for the long run. |

Most new guides would mention "Uprising", "Updated for Uprising", may even mention "After May 6th" or "After May 14th". Also, if you see talk about Scrambler Rifles, Flaylock PIstol, Plasma Cannon or "racial bonuses" then it is related to Uprising as well.

Wish I had read this thread before I started today. Spent a good chunk of my starting SP on upgrading my Dropsuit command up to lvl 5 |

No point in upgrading a skill because you think it makes you better, always know. |

With out going into too much detail at the moment here what I would say as far as skills and spending isk.
Always check info on skill to see the benefits you receive. Some give passive bonus, other give bonuses to certain modules. while other simply unlock the ability to use modules.
don't upgrade skills past 3 unless you know you need to. level 3 usually isn't too skill point intensive so even if you end up not needing it you haven't hurt yourself to much
As far a isk I would say play the standard fits/militia gear fits until you have about 8-10 mil saved then start adding tier one modules. Try to keep yourself at a spot where you are making more money then losing in most battles.
One other note about fittings. tier 1 gear is always better then militia. It may not always seem like it but they almost always take less cpu/pg and have some slight advantage. EX militia assault rifle clip size is 48 assault rifle is 60. militia grenades give 2 nades locus grenades give 3. |

Great tip here. Use militia to test, but once skilled, consider going to STD. |

Another great tip: Use Militia fits for inexpensive variations of suits. Example: I have a 'Marksman' Fitting (WIP Thread coming soon, don't worry), and in the beginning, I used the Militia Frontline suit, with a couple modifications. Doing this turns a 15k experiment into a 5k career beginning. :D |
